Reading over the Excel spreadsheet that Vieravisionary generated based on your responses to Our Progressive Platform is enlightening.
Here at BMT, there are four major rivers that run through our politics: social democracy (policies that invest in citizens’ health, education and retirement), green environmental policies, a Globalist anti-war vision, and powerful commitment to election reform.
There are also many powerful streams: the call for a living wage, a commitment to science, a renewed call for privacy and civil rights, support for sunshine provisions in government, tax and corporation reform and opposition to the death penalty.
These may not have been surprising results, but I think they represent a new kind of coalescing. These streams are merging into one. Now is the time to begin the next step in the BMT Electoral Politics Project, and once again, I open the floor to you the readers with a special challenge to help create a list of Our Elected Officials. To find out more, read below…
In the interest of “doability” I’ve decided to simplify this project. And at the same time, I’m going to ramp up the challenge a bit.
There will three more calls for input.
First, this week I’ll be asking for your input on Currently Elected Officials who you think represent our progressive vision.
Second, next week I will ask you for Candidates who best represent that vision.
Third, and finally, I will ask you to list Organizationsthat best advocate for our positions with our government.
Here’s how this will be a challenge. I am now asking each of you to list Five Elected Officials who you think best represent our vision.
When you list them, I would ask that your list their name, what position they hold and where they are from. I would also like you to add one or two of our Planks that they best represent. To make this trackable I would ask that you look through the following list of planks first before you create your own. This will help Viera Visionary make our data most effective:
Health Care
Education
Retirement
Living Wage
Green/Environment
Globalism
Anti-War
Science
Populism
Privacy
Sunshine Provisions
Election Reform
Corporate Reform
Dealth Penalty
Equal Rights
Gay Rights
Media Reform
Tax Reform
Campaign Reform
Church/State Separation/Secularism
Finally, and this is where it gets difficult. No more than two of your Elected Officials should have already been mentioned. (And no, no one is going to grade you on this…it’s just a goal.)
Our goal is here to get as deep a list as possible. We want local names. We want “small fry” people that others might not have heard of. And since we’re looking to teach each other, where we can…provide a link. So, an entry might look like this:
1. Lupe Valdez, Sheriff, Dallas TX, Equal Rights, Gay Rights
Do you see what I’m aiming at? Three weeks from now, after compiling these three lists, we will have built a database of elected officials, candidates and organizations tagged to specific planks in our platform. The goal is get a list that reflects the values and passions of this community and will empower BooTribbers to learn about candidates, politicians and organizations they might never have heard of.
I will post this first call out more than once. To all those brave souls willing to leap in and help. Please do so!!
Here we go: Please list Five current Elected Officials who best represent our Progressive Values. Local is Good!!
{Update:These tags aren’t the be all end all. They are just meant to be a guide based on your responses so that the data entry isn’t “all over the place.” Church/State Separation was mentioned in a couple planks and accidentally left out here but is now listed. (Some of the planks mentioned more than one or two or three topics, so, forgive me, it gets confusing.)}
Please, we’re doing great, but keep the names coming!! There ARE more folks out there, I am sure. If the repeat thing is weighing you down, don’t worry about it. We need more names and participation here…not more worries!!
Ok here goes (and again this is an awesome project and thank you so much k/o!)

Kid, Boo, whoever. . .I wish these posts could transfer over to the rec list when they scroll down the front page. This is the kind of subject that some of us just can’t respond to quickly. Need thinking time! And then when it disappears I, for one, tend to forget it’s there.
Maybe after any one of these appears on the fp, you could repost it as a diary so we can rec it? Or maybe there’s another way?
we can bump it back to the top at slow times, like overnight.
You could steal the ET debates box …
that might be the correct way to go. You want to create it for k/o?
Kid,
I love your diaries over a DKos and this one here is outstanding. It’s going to take some time for me to come up with my lists though, and re-post them in these comments. This is a wonderful, practical, serious use of blogmeistering.
There will be a repost later this week….and this thread will keep going for a while as well. Viera and I will read and collate all the info.
Don’t know too many locals that I would nominate, so I will go with the House progressives that I respect and believe have tried to uphold my principles.

I’m wondering how “local” people think it would be helpful to go? There are some folks like Mayors, City Council, County Board, School Board that we feel are a match with our progressive ideals. They tend to spend their time on issues that don’t show up on our list – but can really have an impact on the community. Do we want to go there? I can live with it either way.
Go local. As local as you wanna be….
I haven’t been around on the blogs as much as I used to be, so I missed the first part of this series where you asked for issues.
I am surprised that Church/State separation is not in the list. I suppose it might be subsumed under education, equal rights, science, and others. But I know of many groups that are specifically dedicated to Church/State separation issues. Perhaps this issue is perceived as a non-starter, one that would put off more voters than it would attract? I would disagree with that assessment. I think even most religious folks don’t want to see Church and State mixing. Still, maybe it is too esoteric?
I took k/o’s list to be one to use if possible. I added a couple categories on my list.
I am surprised that Church/State separation is not in the list.
ABSOLUTELY!!!! I do believe most posters did clearly include this issue in their lists, so I too am wondering why this omission?? The interjection of blinded faith into American governmental policie is the largest enabling factor that has lead to the citizentry blindness that has allowed the current fascist tendencies to flourish, IMO! Thinking, objective minds do not fall for this crap that easily!
Please CLEARLY include Church-State separation as a major unique issue!
These tags aren’t the be all end all. They are just meant to be a guide based on your responses so that the data entry isn’t “all over the place.” Church/State Separation was mentioned in a couple planks and accidentally left out here but is now listed.
(Some of the planks mentioned more than one or two or three topics, so, forgive me, it gets confusing.)
The goal here is to simply get names for this project and make it straighforward to manage the data. It’s that simple.
Here’s one (I’ll keep thinking about it – but there aren’t many elected officials who are progressive in Missouri)
Maria Chappelle-Nadal – state rep. Mo 72nd district. (Death Penalty; Equal Rights; Health Care: Privacy; Sunshine Laws; Gay
Rights. )
Recently one of her key issues is the “living wage” issue. And she doesn’t just talk the talk, she walks the walk. This is from a recent mailing she did:
link
She’s apparently not progressive enough to have her own web site though.
I’m honored to nominate my congressman Raul Grijalva to this list. (AZ-7) he’s a god-send for every issue I happen to hold dear, here’s an excerpt from his website that hits on some of the issues mentioned in the main diary
Also, Congressman Ed Pastor for his no-vote on the Iraq resolutions and his support for diplomacy over military might as a foreign policy
Az Governor Janet Napolitano – I have my issues with some of her stance, but I can’t fault her for the unyielding support she gives education in our state.
I need to compile more info on the following individuals, but here they are:
I have always supported Carolyn McCarthy Nassau County, NY for her guaranteed opposition to whatever the NRA wants.
I’ve just got three this morning. I reserve the right to revise and extend my remarks.
US Rep. Betty McCollum MN 4th Healthcare, education, anti-war.
St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman Environment, education. Chris is also the son of a legend in MN politics – MN Senate Majority Leader Nick Coleman. He was a true champion of all we believe in and his son is carrying on the fight here in St. Paul.
Ramsey County Commissioner Jim McDonough Jim is a real life example of all that the grassroots is about. First of all, let me say that in MN, counties carry out most of the functions assigned to state governments in most areas.
Jim was a father, union laborer and youth sports coach giving his all in quiet ways to his family and community when his county commissioner was convicted of a felony, but planned to run for re-election again anyway. His opposition was going to be an older state representative who just wanted to keep the county board seat warm while he essentially retired. So Jim decided to challenge both of them. He mobilized all of the youth and families with whom he was involved in community sport leagues to be involved in his campaign and he won!! Now, he represents them with compassion, humility, integrity, intelligence and an amazing amount of wisdom. Unfortunately, he has NO interest in running for any other office. He just wanted his community well represented and wasn’t happy with the options.
I wonder if it might be more productive to gather the list of organizations before trying to gather the elected officials. Why? Because I’m sure a lot of the organizations already have lists of elected officials and probably also grade the performance of elected officials.
He doesn’t get a whole lot of love, but I’d just like to remind people that Dennis Kucinich ran a Presidential campaign on exactly the platform that we drew up in the earlier diaries.
State senator Ellie Kinnaird (NC-23) is pretty good on these issues, as is Jan Schakowsky (IL-9).
Both Kucinich and Schakowsky, as well as several of the others people have mentioned, are members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, whose platform matches ours pretty closely. Maybe we should try to develop closer links with them.
Here’s my list so far:
