Welcome back!
This week we’ll be continuing with the painting Wild Horse Butte located in southern Utah, started last week. It is seen in the photo directly below.
When last we met, the paiting appeared as it does directly below. It was merely a silhouette of the butte with no details added.
Since that time I’ve added some details but these are only the locations of the places that the final shadows will occupy. They serve as a guide. But they do give a sense of how the final painting will appear. The painting in its current state is seen directly below.
Note that the right side of the painting goes much further back and will serve to add some additional depth. I may pull the butte over to the left a bit.
In the coming weeks I will further develop the surface and shadows of the butte and add the sky.
I’ll see you next week.
Paint me a picture of your thoughts.
Whew – I sorely was in need of your diary this Sat. To focus on “creating” rather than “destroying” – you have provided me with a much needed respite.
Do you always work on the shadows first, applying darker paints, then lighter ones? It is amazing how the application of the darker paint has created depth.
I may pull the butte over to the left a bit.
So you can move mountains? π
I also gave myself a laugh by misreading, I read: Wild Horse Butt, then reread it.
Many thanks.
Thanks! It’s often better to do the dark areas first. It’s just easier to go from dark to light. I may have to rethink things here because the shadows look more “final” than I had anticipated.
If I could only move mountains. π
Good morning Boran2,
This step is my favorite part to see, and my favorite part to do in my own work. Being able to use tricks (in my case) to add depth and 3 dimensionality is really satisfying. Especially when I watch people look for the illusion and remark how deep it looks.
Thanks
