It does not make a damned bit of difference WHAT other leaders (and/or the populations) of other countries say about this course of action. Just so long as they do not say “Stop or we will enter this war on the opposing side with everything at our command.” And even then some of the Rapturists on the right…W. among them…might well be inclined to roll the dice.
What matters to BushCo is:
1-Having eventual absolute control of the Arabian Peninsula and the oil that lies beneath it.
and
2-Having the votes to stay in office so that they CAN exert that control.
In their considered…and on the evidence, quite accurate…opinion, further war is the best way to achieve BOTH of those goals.
Russia is the only other big dog who even might get into the fight. And so far, they have not done so. Not big time, anyway. China is too busy mobilizing economically, and Europe is too diverse and too wealthy/bourgeois to agree on anything but the price of Swiss cheese.
I can see a reverse Cuban Missile crisis looming in the future, though. You must remember, Putin besides having been a functiong, cloak and dagger spy in East Berlin during the cold war is also a legitimate judo champion. While Butch was snorting coke in Texas and avoiding real military service the old-fashioned way…he BOUGHT his exemption…Putin’s working class ass was on the line in “The Spy Who Came In From The Cold” territory. And anyone who has EVER gotten deeply involved in a serious martial art has only to look at Putin and Butch standing side by side to see which one THEY would want as their ally in a burgeoning bar fight. In addition to all you say here, Cheney and his neocons understand that must take maximum advantage and seize the opportunity here by helping grow the war as big as they can as their last chance to retain power over US policy going forward. I figure the Israeli government will feel the need to invade and attempt to occupy southern Lebanon with ground troops again, both for protection from rockets and, primarily, because they can’t permit the embarassment resulting from being seen to equivocate or back down with respect to Hizbollah.
Cheney and the Neocons will continue to press the hapless Olmert to continue the murderous overreaction regardless of the realities on the ground.
The Imbecile in Chief will remain clueless and aggresively ignorant.
The Dem leadership will cave in as usual by supporting Israel’s actions and thereby undermine further any chance that party has to make meaningful gains in congress this November.
All the major corporate media in the US will support the Bush regime position and propagate the propaganda because WAR is a big winner for them financially.
I expect the government of India may feel the need to initiate a response against Pakistan for the serial bombings in Mumbai, (if for no other reason that they might feel the need to show themselves to be as “ferocious” as the Israelis.
In sum, ignorance is going to be further weaponized at an even faster and more effective pace than it has been thus far.

About the only possible mistake in this reply is the use of the future tense. This is not what will happen.

I only used the future tense because the Israeli government has not yet sent an occupation force into southern Lebanon.
