Terry Stulce (D-TN-03): The Minimum Wage Should Be a Livable Wage

I’m challenging Congressman Wamp to represent Tennessee’s third district because I believe you deserve someone who will stand up for Tennessee values.  As one example, let’s talk about the minimum wage.

Wamp has continuously voted AGAINST raising the minimum wage, while at the same time he has voted for increases in his own annual salary to the tune of over 30,000 dollars.  This is just plain wrong.
Adjusted for inflation, the minimum wage is the lowest it has been in over half a century!

A person working full-time at minimum wage makes well below the poverty line.  Again, this is just plain wrong.  I grew up on a farm in rural Tennessee.  If we worked hard all day, we had a supper waiting for us at night.  It was just that simple.  I think most Americans feel the same way.   A person who works full-time should be able to afford to eat.

This moral covenant has fueled American prosperity for generations, but Congressman Wamp has violated this moral covenant and eroded our prosperity.

In contrast to Republican rhetoric, research clearly shows that increasing the minimum wage does NOT cause unemployment.  It can actually serve as a stimulus to create jobs.  In fact, eleven million jobs were added to the economy in the four years following the last minimum wage increase!

I’ve always believed that the prosperity of our nation depends on the prosperity of our people.  Instead, President Bush and Congressman Wamp continue to push hard-working Americans deeper into poverty.  As a result, Bush’s term was actually the first since Herbert Hoover’s to lose more jobs than were created.

As your Congressman, I will be committed to fighting for immediate incremental increases in the minimum wage, heading toward a full $2.00 increase, working hard to turn the minimum wage into a “living wage.”

If you want a Congressman that shares your values, I invite you to “Stand Up with Stulce” by volunteering and contributing to my grassroots campaign.  I would appreciate your support in the upcoming Democratic primary, and I’d appreciate your spreading the word about my campaign for progressive change in Congress!

I’m one of the “Veterans for a Secure America,” running for US Congress in the third district of Tennessee.  I’m running a grassroots campaign against a long-term Republican incumbent who has chosen not to honor his term limit pledge of twelve years ago.  Please visit my website, Terry in ’06, and help take America back!  I need and very much appreciate your support!
