BEIRUT (The Guardian) July 19 — Scores of people were killed today as Israel broadened its military offensive in Lebanon while also launching raids into the Gaza Strip and West Bank.
At least 57 Lebanese civilians were killed in the latest Israeli air strikes, raising the death toll of Lebanese to at least 293 since the offensive began last week.
Lebanon’s prime minister Fouad Siniora, called on the international community to immediately call for a ceasefire to “end the Israeli onslaught” which had caused “unimaginable losses”.
He said his country badly needed international humanitarian aid, addint that there were 500,000 displaced Lebanese people, shortages of food and medical supplies, and the hospitals were crippled, he added.

PARIS (AFP) – Saudi Arabia’s Crown Price Sultan Ben Abdel Aziz began a three-day visit to France likely to be dominated by the Middle East and French hopes for large arms contracts. He held an hour of talks with President Jacques Chirac in which the sole topic was the situation in the Middle East and in Lebanon “with a view to strengthening efforts for a de-escalation and a return to peace”, according to Chirac’s office.
The prince will also meet Defense Minister Michele Alliot-Marie and Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin. Although Saudi Arabia has used stronger language than France to criticize the Israeli bombardment of Lebanon, and in particular civilian infrastructure, the views of the two countries are close.

Frankly I do not want to give this current Administration an opportunity to further bankrupt us, nor destroy our troops, nor do anything else to create chaos. WE, as progressives, must make perfectly clear to Congress, that until there is a DETAILED list of all weapons, and weapons related components, sold to Iran in the 80’s and 90’s, as well as to other Arab countries, the Congress had better not vote for use of Military Force.
Of course that is just what Bu$sh Co. wants. Then they can increase the military budget further, and once again redouble their personal wealth.
