BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) 5 minutes ago — Israel’s pounding of Hezbollah positions across Lebanon expanded with missiles targeting bridges in the Christian heartland north of Beirut for the first time, an attack that further isolates Lebanon from the outside world.
Four civilians were killed and 10 wounded in the airstrikes north of the capital, the Lebanese Red Cross said. A Lebanese soldier and four civilians were killed in air raids near Beirut’s airport and southern suburbs, security officials and witnesses said.

The destruction of four bridges on the main north-south coastal highway linking Beirut to Syria further sealed Lebanon from outside links, as the Israeli naval blockade and earlier strikes against roadways have largely closed off other access points.

- I mean “lose” in the sense of a boxer losing a title fight on the points, rather than a more dramatic knockout.
Could also read: I mean “win” in the sense of a champion boxer not able to knock out his inferior opponent in the first round, but winning a title fight on points, or worse, through interference of the referee because of a bloodied eyebrow.
Have you read about the Iranean Jewish Commanding General (IAF), Major General Dan Halutz, and his call, admitting war crimes against the civilian population of Palestinians, as the record clearly shows since 2001 and the Ariel Sharon – George Bush alliance came into existence. The Jewish lobby claims a moral right to kill civilians, see works of Alan Dershowitz.
Fellow commanding officers experienced the defeat of the Lebanon occupation and Israeli withdrawal at the hands of the Hizbollah as young officers, wanting to set the record straight in the war today under the inexperienced Olmert and Peretz. Similar to Bush II as early as Cheney commanded in his transitional administration, set to oust Saddam Hussein at the first chance or provocation, because of the assassination attempt on daddy in Kuwait and the failure to go into Baghdad in 1991 (Cheney – Rumsfeld – Powell).
Syria sponsors the Hezbollah in a common cause to reach a final agreement with Israel on the Shaba’a Farms and Golan Heights – see my diary The Borders of Auschwitz. This was confirmed yesterday in a radio interview I followed on a Dutch network, Syria would apply political pressure on the Hezbollah in exchange for a final agreement and the return of the occupied Golan Heights, a prisoner swap and the Israeli map with locations of landmines in Lebanon and on the Syrian border.

The Uneven Calculus of Mideast Victory
BEIRUT (Christian Science Monitor) Aug. 2 — Lebanese Christian and Muslim religious leaders accused Israel of “war crimes” and “hailed the [Hizbullah] resistance” in a joint statement.
“Hizbullah can’t afford to stand and fight…. They don’t even need to. All they need to do is inflict casualties and disappear. [Israeli forces] will be subject to ongoing Hizbullah attacks that will just go on and on until the Israelis withdraw,” says British defense analyst Charles Heyman, a former editor of Jane’s World Armies.

ASHDOT YAAKOV, Israel (BBC News) Aug. 3 — Orna Shimoni, 65, knows more than most about Israel’s involvement in Lebanon.
After her youngest son, Eyal, an Israeli tank commander was killed in Lebanon in 1997, Mrs Shimoni focused her efforts on getting Israel to withdraw its troops from the Arab country.
She was a member of Four Mothers – arguably the most influential protest movement in Israel’s history – whose campaigning helped lead to Israel pulling its forces out of Lebanon in 2000.
“Of course not everyone agreed, they said Hezbollah would chase us into Israel,” says the mother of five at her home in United Kibbutz Ashdot Yaakov in northern Israel.
“I thought we can’t defend Israel from Lebanon, we have to defend Israel from Israel. I thought we must withdraw, we must see if there is a chance for peace.”
Eyal's House
For years, Ms Shimoni has dedicated herself to building cultural bridges between Arabs and Israelis.
But in 1997, seven young Israeli girls on a school trip close to her home were shot and killed by a Jordanian soldier. She says that her hope for peace between Israel and the Arabs foundered a long time ago.
Following her son’s death, Mrs Shimona began fundraising for a memorial called Eyal’s House – a $5m sports and culture centre, comprising three swimming pools, a dance studio, a gym and an auditorium located on the kibbutz’s grounds. The project designed to bring able-bodied people together with the handicapped is almost complete.
“In the War of Independence and also in the Six-Day War, and even in the Yom Kippur War, a bereaved mother was a heroine. The whole nation looked up to her. The big change that occurred is that I know today that if I am bereaved, then only I am bereaved. That’s it. The loss is mine. This is a natural process. A society that is fighting for its establishment needs myths. Needs Bar Kochba. It doesn’t matter that he destroyed the Jewish people and brought rivers of blood. But he did not bend his head. He upheld his pride. That is why Zionism adopted him. Because we truly needed heroes. And then, within that context, the death of a son had meaning.
“But today we are a normal society. Even if it is not normal to be a normal society in this place. And because we are a normal society, the death no longer has meaning. And then we are not ready to follow the leader and the state blindly. We don’t go to death because Ben-Gurion said so.”

Other sources say 40 civilians killed.
The UN fears these airstrikes near the Syrian border have severed Lebanon’s humanitarian link to the outer world.
for a good reason. After the Israelis came for the Shia, they came for the Christians.
