From todays Independent Robert Fisk has another excellent piece where he argues the war starts today. He also has a very different perspective of what has been happening militarily on the ground in the last 48 hours from what you will see on CNN.
The real war in Lebanon begins today. The world may believe – and Israel may believe – that the UN ceasefire due to come into effect at 6am today will mark the beginning of the end of the latest dirty war in Lebanon after up to 1,000 Lebanese civilians and more than 30 Israeli civilians have been killed. But the reality is quite different and will suffer no such self-delusion: the Israeli army, reeling under the Hizbollah’s onslaught of the past 24 hours, is now facing the harshest guerrilla war in its history. And it is a war they may well lose.

This is a report dated August 11. I heard reports during the broad IDF invasion of last two days, up to 39 tanks were destroyed.
(IsraelNN.com) Aug. 11 — IDF officials admit that the biggest surprise of the ongoing war against Hizbullah is the ease by which terrorists have destroyed IDF tanks.
At least 30 tanks have been totally destroyed or seriously damaged in bomb and anti-tank rocket attacks involving state-of-the-art Russian anti-tank rockets.
About one-half of the military personnel killed in southern Lebanon were inside tanks.

warfare history. Israel counldnt use their beloved third generation (manouver) and their second generation ( shell it then occupy it) was a total failure. In the next few years a lot will be written on this campaign by military theorists and analysts as they learn what fourth generation warfare is from those practicing it. A lot of time too will be spent on trying to work out responses to it.

Fisk should be required reading by everyone-particularly the W/H although even if they did I’m sure they would simply discount his continuing journalist excellence and reporting on any issue because it does not bolster thier neo-con views.
CI, I read someplace that Mr. Fisk is not permitted here in the USA. He was not allowed to enter the states from Canada at one time, I read. What does that tell you?
