Today at her office on historic Woodward Avenue, the site of this weekend’s Dream Cruise, Nancy Skinner announced her primary legislative goal. She calls her proposal “The Next Great American Journey”, an incentive based program to improve the environment, create American jobs, and rescue one of our nation’s historic industries.
“As my first act in Congress, I will work to introduce legislation to support a plan that will make America’s auto industry number one again, end our dependence on foreign oil, substantially reduce our carbon emissions and create paying jobs. Joe Knollenberg and the Bush administration have done nothing to address these issues, working only to fatten the wallets of American oil companies with $6 billion of our tax dollars.” -Nancy Skinner
Nancy is running for Congress in Michigan’s 9th district. Currently the seat is held by Rep. Joe Knollenberg, who has taken over $56,000 from the oil industry.
Nancy is making the environment her number one campaign issue. Everything from her fundraising strategy (Can you donate what you spend on 1 tank of gas to the campaign?), to her legislative agenda is centered on changes that will improve the environment.
Today her plan was released.
“The Next Great American Journey” begins by repealing the $6 billion subsidies given to oil and gas companies by the GOP Energy bill. This money will be used to move America forward, not to reward campaign contributors.
“I propose that three billion dollars be used to create an incentive package that would be awarded to the first U.S. auto maker who can achieve for example:
– Manufacturing a marketable vehicle that receives 100 miles per gallon or
– Producing 50% of it’s retail, non-heavy duty vehicles powered by alternative fuels such as hydrogen or other bio-fuels”
Nancy’s plan uses the remaining three billion dollars for a federal tax abatement or retirement benefit for employees who work designing, creating, and building these history-making cars. The achievements of the hard-working men and women who took the first steps will be rewarded.
Nancy cited John F. Kennedy’s promise to put a man on the moon. President Kennedy inspired the nation as we raced toward innovation and brought together America’s best minds. This is the kind of leadership we need in Washington. The Bush administration and their rubber stamp Congress have not been leaders at a time when we drastically need scientific improvements in one of our essential industries.
