Time for Friday Random 10…

What are you drinking?
With this weather, it’s defnitely a TWO orange blossom martini Friday…
The iPod’s loaded and ready to play
|
Please recommend (and unrecommend the Cafe/Lounge from earlier)
|
May the 4’s be with you
Last Train – Lostprophets
If you won’t hang around – Amy Rigby
Rode Hard – Amy Rigby
The Flyer – Nanci Griffith
The Banks of the Ohio – David Grisman and Jerry Garcia
Clone – Leo Kottke and Mike Gordon
New Country – Mark O’ Connor
Bus to Baton Rouge – Lucinda Williams
20 Questions – Amy Rigby
Blue Christmas – Esquivel
I can’t believe that shuffle gave me 3 Amy Rigby tunes in a set of 10…
Whatchoo got?
Hmm, looks like your playlist has a thing for Amy Rigby (whom I have never of).
Apparently my iPod is as scatter-brained as I am today.
I’d like to order the ‘Family Man Special’, please. (27 of whatever’s on tap)
I think I’ll have to go over to the All Music Guide and see just how many versions of Cotton Eyed Joe there are. I’ve got two (Tom Paxton, Michelle Shocked).
is the techno remix, it’s requested at many wedding receptions that I dj (really…) At least it’s not the Chicken Polka. π
Well there are 192 versions so it’s reasonable that at least one of them would be a techno remix.
Kodachrome — Paul Simon
Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major: I. Allegro (comp. J.S. Bach) — The Yale Cellos
Grandma’s Feather Bed — John Denver
Moment Musical in F minor, No. 3 (comp. Schubert) — London Symphony Orchestra
Forever And For Always — Shania Twain
Wet Dream — Kip Addotta
To Aslan’s Camp (from The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe soundtrack) — Harry Gregson-Williams
Alabama Song — The Doors
Barbie Girl — Aqua
The Marvelous Toy — Peter, Paul & Mary
Ended up not making it to the East Bay for the financial crap; we’ll do that Tuesday. Would’ve been quite warm there; predicted high for our destination was 98 degrees. Relatively mild mid 80’s here — ah, the joys of micro-climates. At least we finally got the blood drawn for the assorted tests to be run…
Need to get laundry going, and both the spouse and I could use a nap…
Good list. Nice to see Kip Addotta in there among Paul Simon, The Doors, PP&M and John Denver. Are you familiar with The Mad Music Archive? Cap’n Wayne does a weekly podcast of silly music, and he takes requests.
’cause I never used my one from last week.
Porcelain Monkey – Warren Zevon
The Moon Over Tucson – Carrie Newcomer
Carry On – Cale J.J.
The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress – Judy Collins
Just Won’t Burn – Susan Tedeschi
He Moved Through The Fair – The Chieftains & Sinéad O’Connor
Nothing Seems To Matter – Bonnie Raitt
The Goon Drag – Don Byron
Rainmaker – Strunz & Farah
Just U Wait NC – Red Beans & Rice
Do you recall which album that Bonnie Raitt cut is from? I’ve always really liked her.
That one is off ‘Give It Up’.
And stop blushing — being irresistible is just another one of your skillz.
The only one I’ve got is Luck of the Draw. I don’t know how that happened. One ex or another musta run off with my copy of Nick of Time.
I like her earlier albums, like Home Plate or Give It Up, too — they aren’t as good musically but they have a rough-edged energy and rawness.
I kind-of dig that green phase that really talented artists go through when they’re still finding their preferred mode of expression. There’s something eminently appealing about the imperfection of it.
I’ll have to come back after I get home.
(grin)
to start your holiday weekend early — “Sorry boss, I need to get home and do a friday random 10.”
You Are My Lady – Luther Vandross
Hot in Herre – Nelly
Feeling Good – Nina Simone
Whatta Man – En Vogue & Salt -N- Peppa
Sweet Soul Sister – The Cult
Two Princes – Spin Doctors
The Summer Wind – Frank Sinatra
All Around The World – Lisa Stansfield
Tomorrow – Silverchair
I’m Into Something Good – Herman’s Hermits
Wow. That’s possibly the most disjointed FRT I’ve come up with so far.
and herman’s hermits. Is it any wonder that everybody falls in love with you?
Cutitout. ::blush::
in my library — the En Vogue/Salt -N- Peppa (loved the video), Spin Doctors (that’s one of my favorite walking/workout songs), and Herman’s Hermits.
Debating whether to get some Ol’ Blue Eyes (Sinatra) or the Velvet Fog (Mel Torme)…one of my earliest dates with the spouse was to see Torme with George Shearing up at the Mountain Winery summer concert series, in the hills above Saratoga (California). Man, could they put on a show… π
You & I have a lot of musical overlap, Cali — and it’s never where I expect it to be, lol.
This afternoon the kids and I coasted. It was the first time I eased up on the pace since day one. We all need this long weekend. Unfortunately they have a little homework and I have a lot.
FRT:
Maybe Baby / Buddy Holly
Nowadays Clancy Can’t Even Sing / Buffalo Springfield
Wongororo / Olliver Mtukudzi
Wild Child / The Doors
Sad Wedding Day / Ashley MacIsaac
Wait / Sarah McLachlan
Out of Your Mind / Jonatha Brooke
It’s 2 A.M. / Shemekia Copeland
The Touch of Your Lips / Bill Evans, Eddie Gomez, Jack Dejohnette
Bumblebee / Leo Kottke
This is for all the people who don’t have summers off:
(Um, you know I only tease people I like, right?)
I’m not going to piss him off, am I? I’m just playing.
besides, he gets snotty with you, I’ll just whomp him up the side of the head.
Just say no to domestic violence! ;p
He has a very hard head (duh, how else could he have stayed married to me so long).
Hee.
Okay, since we were at odds over Chicago, I have to ask — your opinion of Fleetwood Mac? Suck or rock?
Mostly rock, never suck but sometimes kinda blah.
That’s what my wife says. “Hit him in the head. Anyplace else, it might hurt.”
Hey, ya runnin’ for school board over there in the Buckeye State.
π
Now those would be some awesome campaign commercials. The wingnuts would have a field day with my queerness alone, before they even got to my politics and my, ahem, colorful past.
Hey, hey, can I be your campaign manager?
I would pay to watch the wingnuts little pinheads spin off into nonsense yammer oblivion. The heart attacks alone it would cause, could swing the demographics of presidential elections for generations.
You go girl!
Woohoo! I have two interviews lined up for next week. It’ll cut into my slacking time, but what the heck.
Herewith is Omir’s Pseudo-Random 10 for the day. Note that The Global Warming Blues is still not on here, because I’m not finished with it yet. I’ve got the melody, the chords and at least some of the words, and just working on making it all sound good.
Solitude – Duke Ellington
Ring-Around-The-Rosy Rag – Arlo Guthrie
I’m Gettin’ Ready To Go – The Holy Modal Rounders & Friends
Saltpork, West Virginia – Ron Sunshine & Full Swing
An American Tune – Paul Simon
Midnight Confessions – The Grass Roots
The Tide Is High – Blondie
The Masochism Tango – Tom Lehrer
Pretty Boy Floyd – Woody Guthrie
Beale Street Blues – Jack Teagarden & His Orchestra
Ah, Tom Lehrer. Just hearing his name cheers my day.
Great news on the interviews.
It’s really too bad he gave up songwriting. He’s a unique talent.
National Brotherhood Week is my favorite.
Makes me want to go check to see if That Was the Week That Was is on dvd.
Seems like it ought to be if it isn’t. I remember that I watched it, though I don’t remember much about it (I was pretty young at the time, about 9-10 years old) except for vague memories of Nancy Ames singing the theme song. The cast, now that I look at the Wikipedia entry, was pretty high-powered — people like Henry Fonda, Henry Morgan, Elaine May, Gene Hackman, Tom Lehrer, Gloria Steinem, Calvin Trillin, Steve Allen, Woody Allen . . .
I’m about five years older than you so I was just old enough for it to make a huge impression on me — my discovery of how much better adult snottiness was than kids’.
Howdy all! After today I’ll be done posting remotely. Sorry, I have no random 10 right now.
Hi boran! You ave any travel plans for the w/e?
Actually, I’m just coming back from Albuquerque. How are you, CG?
Did you have a nice time? When does B2Boy go back to school?
I’m wishing we had nicer weather (thanks, Ernesto) for the last weekend of the summer, but I’ll get over it. I guess I can catch up on my movie watching and book reading. π
Yeah, it was great. We hiked in Bryce canyon, and many other things. The b2 boy goes back to school Wednesday. Can you believe that the kids have been in school out here for a couple of weeks, in the heat of August?
the Friday Random Whine instead.
I can whine with the best of them.
Albuquerque, eh? Did you get to go up the tram or over to Petroglyph?
Not this trip. But we hiked in Bryce and Sedona, all the way to the bottom. There was a lot of great scenery in the Bryce area.
Should read all the way to the bottom in Bryce.
Bryce is amazing; sometimes it’s hard to believe it’s real. I love the Peek-a-Boo and Fairyland trails best.
Did you go to the Cedar Breaks or Kodachrome Basin?
How did Oak Creek Canyon look after the fire?
We went to Kodachrome but not Cedar Breaks. The fire wasn’t much in evidence, surprisingly enough, but the rockslides were.
We went to Kodachrome but not Cedar Breaks. The fire wasn’t much in evidence, surprisingly enough, but the rockslides were.
I’ll post one for you if you like. π
I’ll accept your offer. π
What kind of music do you like?
See ya in a bit.
for the welcome on the open thread last night! I’ve been working all day and just got the opportunity to get on the computer.
Glad you stopped and hope you will again.
Happy Hour’s over already?
it most certainly is not.
Are you pouring?
How was your week? Are the boys back in school AND have they stopped complaining about it?
My week was okay…but the boys don’t go back until Tuesday. I can’t wait. They’re kind of happy to be going back with all their friends, but I’m sure it won’t take long for the homework complaints to start.
What are you doing this weekend?
CBtY’s back pack and remove all ductape before he gets on the bus π
I have a busy weekend, full of fun things mostly. There’s a Greek festival every Labor Day weekend with lots of good food and fun musical stuff. I may have to go down to southern MO on Sunday. My mom wants me to pick out some things I want from my great aunt’s estate — but since she’s not dead yet it’s sort of strange. And I need to do some shopping.
I hope you and the boys are planning to fill the last days of summer with fun?
Don’t get me started on ductape and school buses…
The Greek festival sounds fun. Have some pastries for me, okay? And shopping sounds good too (Can you tell I’m ready for some free time during the day?)
The boys have been hanging out with friends, and since the weather’s so bad, we’re not really doing much of anything.
but now that you’re here we can restart it and you can tell me all about being excited about Italy.
but he won’t come to Effingham … ::sniff::
I’m getting excited about Italy π
and just for you!
Going mid-week, though, would make it really tough for me — I’m terrible at anticipation. I wouldn’t be worth shit at work.
to get sidetracked by anticipation. Especially since I still want to take Monday off. But Thursday it’s going to be hard waiting for the end of the day π
We just found out that 2 more people are coming, so there will be 12 of us.
So the experiment will probably be confirmed — you can get more people to go to Italy than you can to Chicago.
You’re going to work all day Thursday? Shit, no way I’d sign any contract you worked on that day.
I should have rented a villa in Chicago …
But the month’s not over yet — I’ll get people to Chicago π
I can’t believe you have so little faith in me. I have great powers of concentration — my contracts will be just fine.
I am however skipping the quarterly breakfast bonding that is scheduled for that morning at 7:30. It would be too much to expect me to bond with my co-workers at 7:30 in the morning on the day I’m leaving the country.
Retreats and quarterly bonding, eh. Who knew lawyers were so touchy-feely. Makes me happy I work in techno-world where bonding is when you actually bother to remember a person’s name.
They call it ‘fostering a collegial environment’ but it’s really just indocrination.
explain to the younger ones how tired they’re going to get of people quoting Shakespeare’s “first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers”?
take pictures of Italian shoes on my vacation. Since, of course, I’m not good at pictures I’ve been trying to explain to my sister why i’m going to be asking her to take pictures of shoes. I’m not sure she really understands.
ringers from St. Louis and see if she can tell the difference.
A. Sniff is one of the dogs.
B I have my 2K miles now. How about coming to Batesville tomorrow for heavy German food?
See you in that tottli’n town.
in ages (hint, hint)
Wouldn’t you be surprised if I showed up in Batesville (wherever that is) and surprised you tomorrow …
we deliver.
That’s why I love him.
If you go over to Thursday Dog Blogging, there’s a tableau of Sniff and Giddy acting out a famous scene from the bible (warning: many spider photos).
How do I post an image that you can click on and view larger? Is that hard? (remember, I’m HTML impaired.)
I emailed you an example.
Clickhere for larger version
I don’t know if CG is still around
Looks like medusa.

This is what it looked like from across the rose garden
okay maybe it looks like a bunch of bodiless cheerleaders waving.

I thought it looked like a sunburst.
This was my favorite.
Snakes on a boat?
Okay, I’ll stop being a creep now.
They are really interesting and unusual. I imagine seeing how the light affects the way they look would be fascinating.
I guess I ought to go open up the overnight cafe.
That looks so cool. Would you believe I had just wondered out loud if you had gone to that yet?
New York Botanical Garden is definitely on my list for the fall.
When I saw that I couldn’t believe it survived The Big Storm intact. But it did. None of the Chihuly was damaged. 40 trees came down and they had to close the Japanese garden. People died. But the glass wasn’t damaged at all. Weird.
a lurker in this cafe?
are pictures of Andrew going be involved?
I’ll see what I can do, stranger.
a teenager in the time I’ve missed.
Andi told me it won’t work out for you to come to Chicago. That’s too bad. I wish you could come — even just for the day. It would be great to meet you.
I’m pretty bummed out about Chicago, but there’s always next year.
Andrew isn’t quite a teenager, but he is almost 3 feet tall and has started saying some words and he is now spontaneously kissing everything, us, the cats, leaves, etc.
I don’t have a good recent shot of him. He still doesn’t smile upon request, so many of our recent shots of him look like mug shots.
There’s always room for you, TT. How’s Andrew? Your 1-year Family Day just passed, didn’t it?
Yes it did CG, Tuesday. Sadly, it was the first day for students in my district, so I was at work. Andrew is awesome.
How are things in the cabin?
Things here are going well… although we just spent the entire evening eating!
CBtE turned 14 last Sunday, and CBtY is starting middle school Tuesday. For the first time in 2 years, everybody will be out of the house at the same time in the morning, which I’m looking forward to.
Wow, a freshman and a 6th (?) grader. Both tough years. I’m sure they’ll be great. How are your classes?
How way your week?
as it always is. Everyone is just a little nervous. This next week will tell me a lot more about the kiddies. I will be piling the work on them, starting Tuesday.
Everyone sounds like their excited for Chicago.
So now we’ll be back to your letting Andrew grade papers so you can hang in the cafe? π
I’m not sure that Andrew will be grading papers. He’s trying to invoke some bullshit child labor law, blah, blah, blah. Can you believe it?
How are Jim’s classes?
that had been nicely colored in by the prof’s baby. It was better than anything I had to offer.
Jim says the answer depends on what minute you ask him.
… and it’s even better if it’s hardened.
was a reason I had Woodchucks in my refrigerator.
Got the test results back already (!) — our clinic has a great online system so I’m able to check them at home. All looks well except for triglycerides and glucose, so I’m worried she’s going to stick me with the diagnosis of the Big D. According to the report though, it usually takes a couple of high readings so maybe if I can be a really good spud, I can dodge the bullet…
Crud, I was afraid of this… π
Hi Cali — Long time no see. No sense in guessing what the diagnosis is until she actually makes it.
so I’ll get the news then…maybe I can convince her that since the world is ending shortly, I don’t have to bother doing anything about it… lol
LTNS to you too, Mary…how’s life treating you? π (Might want to wait till the next Cafe to respond; this one’s getting pretty crowded…)
24/7 cafe here
Thank you!
