Earlier this week, Ned Lamont criticized Joe Lieberman for publicly speaking out on the Senate floor about Bill Clinton and the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Here is what Ned said.
“You don’t go to the floor of the Senate, and turn this into a political spectacle. You go up there, sit down with one of your oldest friends, and say you’re embarrassing yourself, your presidency and you’re embarrassing your family, and it has to stop”. This is what Lamont says now, but when the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal hit, old Neddie has a much different tone.
This is an e-mail that Lamont sent to Lieberman, Sept. 16th 1998.
” Dear Joe, I reluctantly supported the moral outrage you expressed because I thought it might make matters worse. I was reluctant because nobody expressed moral outrage over how Reagan treated his kids, or Gingrich lied about supporting term limits, (In other words, it was selective outrage); I was reluctant because the Starr inquisition is much more threatening to our civil liberties, and our national interest than Clinton’s misbehavior.
I supported your position because Clinton’s behavior was outregeous; a Democrat had to stand up and state as much, and I hoped that your statement was the beginning of the end.
Unfortunately, the statement was the beginning of a process that has turned political and morally offensive. I’m the father of three, and the thought that Clinton testifying about oral sex before a grand jury, might be broadcast into my living room is outregeous. The Starr report, read like a tabloid, not a legal recitation, and that it streamed into my home via every medium available.
This sorry episode is an embarrassment to me as a father, and to us as a nation. If Clinton had a sex problem, mature adults would have handled this privately, not turned it into a political crusade and legal entanglement, with no end in sight.
Senator, you have expressed your outrage about the presidents conduct, now stand up, and use your moral authority to put an end to this snowballing mess. We all know the facts, a lot more than any of us care to know, and should know. We’ve made up our minds that Clinton did wrong, confessed to his sin, and should be censored for lying, and then move on. It is time for you to make up your mind, and speak your mind as you did so eloquently last Thursday”.
Sincerly, Ned Lamont.
There it is folks in black and white. Lamont criticizes Lieberman for speaking out on the floor about the Lewinsky mess, yet in an e-mail, he supports Joe, albeit reluctanly, for speaking on the floor of the Senate. This is the raging hypocrisy of Ned Lamont.
You have trouble with close reading, I presume?
Because what Lamont said is that mature adults would have settled the issue in private instead of taking to the Senate floor to castigate Clinton, as Lieberman had done. He supported Joe’s sentiments, but he believed that it should have taken place in private instead of publicly.
Get a clue, please.
Your the one who needs to get a clue. Neddie is a raging HYPOCRITE. I do not want a raging hypocrite as my next Senator.
What do you call this?
i think I can guess what that is a link to…
Have you paid any attention to this race at all? Lamont has been the one who has been talking about substantive issues, while it’s been Lieberman who’s been hurting the country by backstabbing those who want to make it better – Democrats – repeatedly.
You think Lieberman is intent on finding solutions? If you live in CT, what has he done for you the past 18 years? Eh? I can guarantee you that the answer is very little.
For blog baiters.
if we all just ignore thiss blog baiter, maybe he/whe will go away. Got any recipies? I am longing for something different for dinner tonight.
I agree Aloha, but before we go to the ignoring and recipes, I just have to say that I’m grateful for this particular post. Since I don’t live in Connecticut, I don’t know much about Lamont. I LOVE what he said about that sorry, ugly piece of our history. So these quotes just made me all the more impressed with him. Ironic, huh?
Great point! Take what we need and leave the rest behind.
what’s the matter aloha, can’t stand the truth???
Snake wieners
6 Rhodes Texas Rolls, thawed but still cold
3-inch square aluminum foil
4 franks
8 currants or small raisins
1 egg, beaten
1 red licorice lace
Press 1 1/2 rolls together and roll them into a 15-inch snake, leaving one end a little thicker for the head. Using a knife and a toothpick, cut slashes and poke holes to decorate the body of the snake. On larger end of snake poke holes for the nose and slice a 1 1/2-inch opening for the mouth. Crinkle up the aluminum foil and place in mouth to wedge it open during baking. Cut slashes across the tail section to resemble a rattler.
Wrap snake around a frank and place on a large sprayed baking sheet. Poke deep holes for eyes and press currants into them.
Brush well with egg and let rise for 15 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees F for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Place on a cooling rack and carefully remove foil. Poke a 3-inch piece of licorice into the throat. Clip the end to make it look like a forked tongue.
This recipe makes 4 snakes.
on your last plane flight? 🙂
Curried Chicken Rice Salad
2 cups cooked rice (brown or white)
1/4 cup chopped bell pepper (any color)
1/2 cup red grapes
1/4 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped cooked chicken
1/4 cup fat free plain yogurt
2 Tbsp. lemon juice
1 Tbsp. curry powder (more or less to taste)
Mix first five ingredients; set aside. In separate bowl, mix last four ingredients; add to rice mixture and mix thoroughly. Chill for at least 2 hours.
Goes well with tomato soup; if you’re not restricted on carbs you could add a slice of naan (Indian flatbread) on the side…
Snakes on the Plane! OMG!
Well, no, I think the last time I flew I had a bag of those little bitty pretzels and some water, but if the airlines served those wiener snakes, I’d probably pass.
Now, YOUR recipe is much better and I would try that, for sure.
Have you seen this recipe yet?
Snake Gourd Curry
2 cups plain yogurt
½ cup chopped mint
8 ounces snake gourd, trimmed,
seeded and chopped
2 tablespoons cold-pressed sesame oil or any preferred cooking oil
1 teaspoon black mustard seeds
1 large garlic clove, minced
1 tablespoon minced hot red pepper, or to taste
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon curry powder
½ cup hot water
2 teaspoons salt
Put the yogurt and mint in separate serving bowls on the table. Wash and cut the gourds in half lengthwise. Remove the pith and small seeds. Chop and weigh. Heat the oil in a sauté pan and add the mustard seeds. When the seeds begin to crackle and pop, add the snake gourd, garlic, red pepper, sugar and curry powder. Stir, cover and let the curry mixture cook over a medium-high heat for 3 minutes, then add a half cup hot water and continue cooking for 5 minutes or until the gourd is thoroughly hot, but not soft. Season with salt and serve immediately. To eat the curry, mix it with the yogurt and chopped mint, and then spread this on hot nan bread or pita bread
Sounds yummy to me!
Man, you guys will do just about anything, including ignoring the facts to protect your boy. Lamont can anything, and get away with anything, and you completely ignore it, ot worse off, condone it, but when Lieberman say something, it’s armageddon. I guess hypocrisy is OK if you agree with it. Typical!!!!
Why don’t you reply to to the legitimate criticisms that have been posted here about your idol?
You will do just about anything, including ignoring the facts, to protect your boy. Lieberman can do anything, and get away with anything, and you completely ignore it and condone it. I guess hypocrisy is OK if you agree with it, hunh?
If you were to actually engage anyone in some real debate, rather than your smearing and sliming attacks, you would actually find this place to be very open-minded. Your outrage and indignation is your own undoing. Youe emotional attacks are counter-productive and your lack of ability to recognize the legitimate criticisms of your own candidate reveal that you are a one-sided and very shallow blogger. I guess you can’t respond to anyone who has legitimate criticisms of your idol because that would void your contract with Joey’s campaign, right?
That sort of crap doesn’t work here, so you might as well quit and move on to some website that likes slime attacks, like free republic, where you belong.
have worn out your welcome. Perhaps you misunderstood the header at the top of the page: “Booman Tribune ~ A Progressive Community”, perhaps you are merely what you appear to be. However, by applying Occam’s Razor, I think the latter is the case.
You may want to save this, hopefully, it will come in handy in the coming months:
I hear it goes well with kool-aide
enjoy
If you take a look at my username, it’s east coastMODERATE This might upset some of you lefties, but the Democrats do allow moderates in the party, although on this site, it’s pretty well known that all you don’t tolerate someone who disagrees with you.
If you don’t like what I write, you can do two things. Ignore it altogther, or respond to it. But if you’re going to respond, try not to see things through rose colored glasses. Ned Lamont is a hypocrite, amongest other things, and as long as he is, or does something stupid, you can bet I’m going to blog about it.
As for me wearing out my welcome, that’s not up to you to decide.
You haven’t responded substantively to anything here.
So either put up, or shut the fuck up.
ECM, I served in the military so that we can have rights to live with for everyone. That also means you. As long as we do not abuse our rights, we can assume they are there for us every day and all the time. Mr. Lamont has a right to say what he wants to say and so does Mr. Lieberman. It is our minds and hearts that decide what we want to believe and go with. You can not change our minds here. I suggest you try making us here offended and stop belittling us. I find Mr Lieberman is good at doing this to others. I watching him go to diner after diner right after the 2000 election and some of his mannerisms were not good for what is being American. He was not courteous to some, by pushing away from them or ignoring them. This is wrong..very wrong. I do not know Mr Lamont either, for all I know he is cruel too, but I do know I saw with my very own eyes what Lieberman can and will do to the ppl of CT. I would not vote for him…no no no..so stop it, please. I am being kind here. Get beyond being a prick, which is the only rule not to break here. OK? Thanks and have a great day. Thank you for being a democrat.
Brenda, a few things to get straight. First off, I am not a Democrat. Never have been, probably never will be. To me, their is no real difference between the parties. Both cater to the base, and moderates like me have to look in the window to see what’s going on. Republicans love Rush Limbaugh, and Democrats love Mike Malloy. Both scream, rant and rave, and that’s all they do.
I thank you for serving in the military, and I am not belittling people. In fact, I think it’s the other way around. I mention the hypocrisy of Ned Lamont, and I get recipies thrown in my face. There are two sides to the story, but no one here wants to hear anything either anti-Lamont, or pro Lieberman. Lamont gets a free pass, and Lieberman is the anti christ. If they would bother to look at Lieberman’s WHOLE RECORD, they will find out that Lieberman is a soild liberal, who votes with Democrats 82% of the time. But since he voted for the war, he’s somehow subhuman, and must be destroyed.
Just because I present a different view then many in here, I am not a prick. I have been banned from both liberal and conservative blogs. Liberals don’t like the fact I support Lieberman, and conservatives don’t like the fact that I think Ronald Reagan was one of the worst president’s of all time. I try to be tolerant of others, but they have to show me the same courtesy, otherwise I don’t give a damn what they think. You sound like a resonable person, and I hope you and I can agree to disagree.
Might I ask you then, what is your politics? I will agree to disagree. I can carry on a honest conversation with anyone who will talk sensible.
It is not your opinion of Lieberman that has made us post recipes here. I’ve already said that Lamont is not a perfect angel. I don’t think that anyone else here believes that either. Many of us, myself included, still see him as the better alternative. You have not responded to any of our statements of concern about your candidate with anything other than emotional rants. You accuse us of “wearing rose-colored glasses” and of being intolerant. You have slandered the whole community and some of its valued members relentlessly and provided no reasonable commentary.
I tried to engage you but you told me that I just wanted to “see lots of Republican blood on the floor”.
You have shown NO RESPECT for anyone here prior to thanking Brenda for her military service.
When you stop screaming at us with your emotional rants and engage in reasonable discussions, you will find that most of us here will give you the respect that you desire. We will probably not agree with you, but you will be respected.
I notice that you disavowed having ever been a Democrat, but you didn’t disavow having ever been a Republican. As a lifelong independent, I testify that I have never been a member of either party, though once when I was in college I signed up with College Republicans so I could get some free champagne at the top of a tall building – ONCE.
As for being politically moderate, I have stated elsewhere on this blog that I used to be a moderate, twenty five years ago. Today, the political situation has shifted so far toward the extreme right-wing end of the political spectrum that to be politically moderate is to be well to the right of Richard Nixon and within spittin’ distance of Ronald Reagan, in my opinion. Now, ‘moderate’ is just another word for nothing left to lose.
It seems to me that if you had lived in the times of the American Revolution, you would have been screaming at the Patriots to stop arguing and join hands with the Tories in the name of moderation. Have you considered joining the Unity Party? They have also elevated moderation and compromise to the level of godliness.
I am a moderate Independent, who leans Democratic on most issues. That’s all I say for now. If you want more info, I’ll e-mail you if you want.
Once upon a time, moderate or moderation used to mean some sort of balance between the extremes. Sadly, the way it is used in politics these days it has no such meaning. Today it means, Not Quite a Neocon.
I am not a party girl. . .I belong to no political party. I will and do vote for whomever I believe is the best candidate. Almost all of the time, that has been a Democratic candidate. I am also the most left wing bleeding heart liberal progressive socialist you will ever want to meet. That’s me. I have room for all of the political stances our community has and shares. I am not always right (except when I say so. . .LOL), I am always willing to listen, but I don’t listen when people call me names, when people yell at me, when people want me to listen to them but are unwilling to listen to me. Just the way I am.
I disagree with your love of Liberman. So what. You won’t change my mind, I won’t change yours (obviously), so let’s all just move on to another subject. We understand your stance, although we may not agree and although we may not understand your reasons. You are entitled to support the Joe all you want. But I find it hard to believe that you are really surprised by the response to your statements here.
And I am equally surprised that you find posting recipes so hurtful. “Throwing them in your face.” I can always use a good recipe, how about you?
Next time you might want to try presenting your arguments in a more positive frame. Like telling us all the wonderful glowing reasons you like the Joe as your candidate. Can you do that without needing to smear Mr Lamont? Worth a try, you know. If you use facts to support your claims, most folks here will give you a reasoned response.
