It looks like the new Rolling Stone due out tomorrow will have a doozy of an article by RFK, Jr. whick will look into whether the 2006 election can be hacked. Based on a few blurbs that were “sneak previewed” by Raw Story it looks like there is an even bigger story in that article – an admission by a Diebold consultant that machine software was altered in 5,000 machines in DeKalb and Fulton counties on the day of the election.
If anyone remembers the 2002 election in Georgia, that is the one where Max Cleland’s five to six point lead was erased overnight to a seven point loss, leading to a miraculous win by Saxby Chambliss, which even describes his come from behind win as “stunning and historical” in his Senate website.
And while many indicated that this was due at least in part to an infamous advertisement that compared Cleland (a war hero) to Osama Bin Laden, there was always a cloud hanging over this election as this was the first year of the Diebold machines in Georgia, and it just not passing the “smell test”.
Now, I am not putting on a tin foil hat here, as we have seen over the past few weeks how easy it is for the Diebold machines to be altered and hacked, but I wanted to point something out from the upcoming article that may get lost in the hullabaloo of RFK Jr. exploring the potential for hacking the 2006 election.
What is interesting here is that the Diebold consultant, Christopher Hood has been outspoken about the good things that Diebold machines can do. He is quoted here talking about voter outreach and also is quoted talking about how many voters have only heard the criticisms of Diebold.
So when he speaks up, I think it lends some credibility, or at least more than someone who has always been a critic. Further, the Raw Story excerpt describes Hood as “an African American whose parents helped fight for voting rights in the South in the 1960s” and was “proud to be promoting Diebold’s machines”.
But Hood talks of what I would certainly call “funny business” going on in Georgia during August 2002 right before the primaries. Things like software patches that were not approved by the State, directions from Diebold’s election unit president to not share information with the county authorities, and early morning changes to machines on (I believe primary) election day.
The company was authorized to put together ballots, program machines and train poll workers across the state – all without any official supervision. “We ran the election,” says Hood. “We had 356 people that Diebold brought into the state. Diebold opened and closed the polls and tabulated the votes. Diebold convinced (Georgia Secretary of State Cathy) Cox that it would be best if the company ran everything due to the time constraints, and in the interest of a trouble-free election, she let us do it.”
So basically, there was a deal where Diebold had free reign over the entire Georgia election process for 2002. Which included training the workers, setting up the machines, counting the votes, and, well, just about everything else.
And then Diebold’s election unit president stepped in and made the story even more interesting:
Then, one muggy day in mid-August, Hood was surprised to see the president of Diebold’s election unit, Bob Urosevich, arrive in Georgia from his headquarters in Texas. With the primaries looming, Urosevich was personally distributing a “patch,” a little piece of software designed to correct glitches in the computer program. “We were told that it was intended to fix the clock in the system, which it didn’t do,” Hood says. “The curious thing is the very swift, covert way this was done.”
And thanks to the agreement between Cox and Diebold, there was no need to certify the change to the software, since Diebold was pretty much running the election process – at least the administration of it.
“It was an unauthorized patch, and they were trying to keep it secret from the state,” Hood told me. “We were told not to talk to county personnel about it. I received instructions directly from Urosevich. It was very unusual that a president of the company would give an order like that and be involved at that level.”
What then happened on the day of the elections (and again, the blurbs lead me to think it was the primaries, but as we know from the recent video of the Princeton scientists as well as the many other demonstrations showing how to hack the Diebold machines without leaving a trace), the “patch” may (and I say this until there is definitive proof, but it does lead you to scratch your head and say “hmmmm”) have set the stage for the general elections as well.
According to Hood, Diebold employees altered software in some 5,000 machines in DeKalb and Fulton counties – the state’s largest Democratic strongholds. To avoid detection, Hood and others on his team entered warehouses early in the morning. “We went in at 7:30 a.m. and were out by 11,” Hood says. “There was a universal key to unlock the machines, and it’s easy to get access. The machines in the warehouses were unlocked. We had control of everything. The state gave us the keys to the castle, so to speak, and they stayed out of our way.” Hood personally patched fifty-six machines and witnessed the patch being applied to more than 1,200 others.
What the patch ultimately was for and did is unknown as of now. It may be known when the Rolling Stone article is released tomorrow. We may never know.
But we do know that someone who was a “proud Diebold consultant” has suddenly come out and admitted that he, as well as others at the direction of Diebold’s election unit president were asked to alter machines in heavily Democratic areas under orders of secrecy.
And just the fact that this happened should make you outraged.
UPDATE: It looks like Hood is a FORMER Diebold consultant. Not that it makes much of a difference to the facts but I wanted to put that out there once I realized it. I also added and clarified some titles for more accuracy since this is BIG.

And recommended there.
Important story. Who would have guessed that Rolling Stone would be the news outlet leading the way with this story? That’s how far our regular mainstream so-called liberal media has fallen.
And all the more relevant now that an effort is underway to get states to give over their electoral college votes to the winner of the popular vote. I think 2004 showed us conclusively the popular vote not only can be altered, but will be altered, again.
Diebold systems and ES&S systems (which were, at one time not long ago, run by brothers) counted some 80% of our vote in 2004. This admission is super important, and people need to know that while a few activists are on the frontlines trying to find ways to protect your vote, this effort is in its infancy, and your 2006 vote is likely NOT secure. It’s up to each one of you to find out how votes are cast and counted, and ask for some measure of accountability. If you wait for others to do it for you, we’re going to have continuous reruns of 2000, 2002, and 2004. I hope none of us want that!!!
Outrage? Well my outrage meter went off the charts quite a few years ago. This latest story/investigation only continues to prove how utterly corrupt the voting system in this country has become by the criminals running things.
Bev Harris found the name of the patch a few years ago. It was robgeorgia.txt
Lou Dobbs is concerned about electronic voting:
Across the nation, eight out of every 10 voters will be casting their ballots this November on electronic voting machines. And these machines time and again have been demonstrated to be extremely vulnerable to tampering and error, and many of them have no voter-verified paper trail.
There is simply no way in which election officials and their staffs of thousands of volunteers with limited experience and often poor training can possibly carry out reliable recounts.
Only 27 states have laws requiring the use of voter-verified paper trails in electronic machines. Eight more states utilize a paper trail in their machines but don’t require it, leaving 15 states with no mandated requirements for safeguarding your vote. But with no national law in place, our midterm elections are being threatened by a system lacking any real regulation and standards.
Don’t be surprised, Lou has had Kitty Pilgrim on this story for many weeks, maybe years. He’s asked authors of the many recent voting machine fraud books to come on his program, too, but they are sometimes interviewed for nanoseconds.
I remember this result; it stunk to high heaven.
Any person who has taken even the most basic college statistics class will tell you that the odds of having these kinds of outliers happen over and over again — all of them breaking in favor of the GOP — is, essentially, impossible. The Law of Large Numbers dictates this, which is why exit polls are always — always — accurate to within a very minute margin of error.
And so I believe the Republicans will pull off another “miraculous” victory, this election cycle. The media will spin this as yet another reason why polling can’t be trusted, and then nothing will happen. All the ersatz winners will be sworn in (Billbray), and Rove and company will keep on doing what they do.
The only possible hope in all of this is that the margin is so huge that the GOP can’t throw enough elections to make the results seem plausible, so I continue to hope.
We should not be at all surprised, however, when we hear BushCo crowing that this is yet another affirmation of their stalwart leadership.
Forgot the link.
Unfortunately, it was in the Democratic direction. I cover Georgia politics and have written some county mapping applications that compare election results. The map below compares the 2002 Governor’s election results to the 1998 Governor’s election. In 1998, Barnes (D) blew out his competition, in 2002 he was blown out. The trend in the entire state was about Barnes -7% overall.
He only got a better percentage in 7 out of 159 counties in 2002 than he did in 1998. And 2 of those counties were DeKalb and Fulton, with DeKalb being his second best improving county.
Now for Cleland. his elections are a little more difficult to compare, because one happened in a Presidential year and one did not. His overall vote was down about 3% from 1996, and he only did better in 20 out of 159 counties. Fulton was not one of them, although he was only down about 1% from his 1996 showing, while in DeKalb he did significantly better.
Here is that map:
So anyway, even there their could be something going on with our voting machines (and the real scandal is that we’ll never know for sure) I think the most likely explanation of the drop from previous elections in ’02 is a combination of voter dissatisfaction with Democratic candidates in Georgia (we had uninterrupted rule of the legislature and governor’s mansion from 1870-2002) and believe it or not the electronic machines which produced an unalterable count in rural counties that were previously controlled by corrupt local Democratic machines.
