and talked to one of my yuppie daughter’s yuppie friends and I was ranting as usual. I first ranted about his assertion that volunteerism will take care of everything, really sure it will, of course it will, of course your volunteerism will never get out of the suburbs so the inner city will never feel your love! rant rant rage. Then I talked about torture. “Oh”, he says, “there is no torture.” I was gaping at him about this time: “what do you mean there is no torture – they have killed people torturing them!” “Oh no” he says, “that was all just a set up!” OMFG. Talk about your koolaid drinker.
And I’m telling you, once again, as a scholar of Russian, of popular culture, and so forth, that the name is pronounced:
STRANGLE-OFF.
Everybody gets it wrong. Heh.
Indeed.
A cold war classic that once again has a timely significance and sends shivers down my old achy spine!

Can someone please make a clip of the brief TV interview about terrorism in the very beginning of Terry Gilliam’s Classic Brazil and post it to YouTube? Pretty please?
A sample:
INTERVIEWER: Do you think that the government is winning the battle against terrorists?
HELPMANN: Oh yes. Our morale is much higher than theirs, we’re fielding all their strokes, running a lot of them out, and pretty consistently knocking them for six. I’d say they’re nearly out of the game.
INTERVIEWER: But the bombing campaign is now in its thirteenth year.
HELPMANN: Beginner’s luck.
