Fred Barnes is warning us.
The problem here is that national security isn’t the leading campaign issue. And saying it should be won’t make it so. What’s needed is an event–a big event–to crystallize the issue in a way that highlights Republican strength and Democratic weakness. It was two events–the foiled British terrorist plot and the need to comply with a Supreme Court decision on handling captured terrorists–that led to the Republican mini-rally in September.
Of course there’s little time left for a major event to occur. The North Korean bomb test wasn’t big enough to change the course of the campaign. So Republicans may have to rely on their two remaining assets: They have more money than the Democrats and a voter turnout operation second to none.
Despite their commanding position with the election only weeks away, Democrats are fearful of a last-minute Republican gambit. What if White House aide Karl Rove has arranged for the capture of Osama bin Laden so it can be announced a few days prior to November 7? Rove is clever, but not that clever. Which is why Republicans and conservatives need to prepare themselves for bad news on Election Night.
You think we’re paranoid? Fred Barnes is praying for a ‘BIG EVENT’. That’s about the same as advocating one.
This where the the limitations on ‘creating reality’ will show themselves, I s’pose.
Hopefully when they do cry “wolf” or rather TERRRERRR again that this time it is real.
The so called liquid bomb plot to blow up airplanes in August was debunked by the British Press on October 1st. The Pakistani version of The Observer debunked it on August 23rd.
British Army explosives experts cast doubt as to feasibility of story concocted on September 18th.
And the Christian Scientist Monitor got around to publishing the facts for the USA on October 2nd.
There used to be laws against yelling “FIRE” in theaters if a threat was not real! Do we have any laws that prohibits people yelling “TERROR” whenever they are falsely making that claim?
If those laws do exist, they do not cover the actions of this administration. Laws, schmaws!
In any case, I personally doubt that this administration perceives any truly serious threat beyond the political realm. This is, after all, their very own Rapture — unchecked ultimate power.
Addicts know no fear of their actions’ consequence & therefore harbor no concern for the common good.
It’s a shame they’ve so many willing tools at their disposal. Refer to Rapture, above.
What is needed is an event–a big event–to crystallize the issue in a way that highlights Democratic strength and Republican weakness.
But I will settle for Fred Barnes’s head exploding the day after election day.
A poor yellow-dog Democrat can pray, can’t he?
