While being a Yankees fan, and the fact that the team sucked in the playoffs this year, I really didn’t have that much interest in the world series, but congratulations to the Cards on winning the championship.

Well, I’m hoping that our resident St. Louisan, maryb, was at the game tonight. Since I’m an expat St. Louisan living in the SF Bay Area, I’ll take up the responsibility to say, Thanks!
The Cards really pulled one out. A friend of mine called the other day to complain that Tony LaRussa should’ve been more aggressive about trying to get Kenny Rogers thrown out of Game 2 for doctoring the ball. My pet theory (based in part on the mysterious appearance in the next day’s Wall Street Journal of stories about the moral burden that high-level cheaters carry all their lives) is that La Russa just wanted to get the Tigers pitchers thinking (remember Crash Davis telling Nuke LaLoosh, “Don’t think – just pitch.”) Based on their fielding performance, Tony succeeded.
So are the Tigers now going to be in the forefront of a push for a Designated Fielder rule?
We lost, but we’ll be generous. The Cards beat us fair and square. It’s been a great a ride this year in Detroit. The team is young and exceeded everyone’s expectations. They have some real holes. Their fielding is usually not that bad. The also have some exciting young talent. They’ll be back.
But hat’s off to the Cards and Maryb. World Champs 2006
I’ve had fun living in Detroit this season, but being a bred in the bone Cardinals fan, I’m always happy to see the Cards win. Doing so in the new stadium is especially sweet – sort of. I’m not particularly fond of all of the Cards business/management strategies.
Here in Detroit it would have been great to win – a real boost for the city that America puts down constantly without thinking. However, winning the pennant was good for Detroit, and our team is young. Detroit has been more about Hockey for quite a while, with the Pistons coming in a close second. The Shock are also good and great fun to watch, with a growing fan base. And after a number of lean years, the Tigers are on the rise. (I won’t speak about the other cat-mascoted sports team around here).
I just wish that major league baseball had chosen to build a love for the sport in little kids as it once did. That’s nearly gone, in comparison to what happens related to basketball and football. Even in those sports, fun, skill-building, and amateurism has been replaced by relentless professionalization with special camps, selective leagues, highly competitive and intrusive coaching and parenting. Sad.
But for a few days in the fall. . . we even got to see both NY teams go down. Sweet victory for the entire flyover zone here!
