Asian American filmmaker Eric Byler has put his talents to good use in his volunteer work for the Jim Webb campaign for the US Senate. If you’re looking for some inspiration as you plan your own GOTV work, check out the video he made for GenerationWebb.com about a multiethnic group of Webb volunteers and why they love their candidate.
If you live in Virginia or nearby and have time to volunteer for Webb, contact Byler’s group, Real Virginians for Webb. And dontcha dare miss their GOTV rally tomorrow, Saturday, October 28, in Annandale. From the official press release:
VA GOVERNORS to SPEAK at JIM WEBB RALLY
Real Virginians for Jim Webb
A Diverse Grassroots Coalition Event to Support Jim Webb

The event is unique because it was proposed, planned and will be largely executed by volunteers rather than paid staff. The volunteer organizers are members of a group called “Real Virginians for Webb” (RVFW). RVFW was formed shortly after Sen. George Allen’s infamous “Macaca” statements, implying that the “real world of Virginia” excludes minorities and embraces prejudice. Shared indignation among Webb volunteers working in various ethnic outreach programs inspired them to unite their separate efforts under one banner.
The notion that we are all “real Virginians” caught on with non-ethnic volunteers as well. Unlike George Allen’s “Ethnic Rally,” RVFW’s “Get Out The Vote” rally is intended for Virginians of all backgrounds. Organizers of RVFW include many Caucasians, and the group stresses that this rally is not for minorities only. As organizer Jan Mueller explained: “This movement is about uniting people. It’s for all Virginians, and all Americans who believe that the values that we have in common are greater than our differences.”
