Oh, and on the way to the airport I missed hitting a Paddymelon by this much. It was one of those brake locking, car starting to run off the road, misses. On my way back home I could see the skid marks and they were impressive. Nothing like a little adrenalin for breakfast.
Keres, thanks for expanding my vocabulary yet again.
Do you suppose that the wonders of Australian English are the result of the collision of the Irish love of words, the natural strangeness of Australia to the European eye, and Aborignal language(s)?
Many of the animal and place names come from the native languages (over a hundred different aboriginal languages). They are usually pretty easy to spot, like the towns of Woolagong, Noongara, Karrakatta, etc. Likewise most of the animal names come from aboriginal languages: wombat, cookatoo, kookaburra, koala, etc.
Then there are the strong Scotish, Irish and Cockney (rhyming slang) influences. The major river in Tasmania, the Derwent, is a Scotish word for “good water.”
The thing that drives me nuts, actually two things, are the huge number of Norman-English holdovers, that sound all snooty to my American ear. Like people with horses pasture available to lease put up signs advertising “Agistments.” And yes, I can tell you the greek origin of the word (Aegis – goat, Athena’s goatskin cloak, the wearer or bearer of which had her protection and authority), but I don’t use ever expect to use such a word. Then there’s the “baby talk.” Breakfast is Brekkie, biscuit (cookie) is bikkie. Truck drivers are truckies, and can you imagine calling an American biker (eg. a Hell’s Angels) a “Bikie” (and keep your teeth, anyway).
Anyway. It’s been a big adjustment, and I’m afraid I still speak American, as I just can’t bring myself to say “uh dulah noindy-noin” (say it quietly without moving your lips) when I mean “a dollar ninty-nine,” or worse yet turn the simple declarative “no” into the multisylabic “nah-ow-ah” (which like has a rise at the end like it’s a question).
It says something that “baby talk” words are so commonly used. Is this the informality that seems so common in Australia?
The Norman-English stuff sounds like its meant to snooty. Maybe a reaction against the “low-class” informality by the “horsey-set” who own the Agistments? (I’m assuming a lot here.)
And “uh dulah noindy-noin” doesn’t sound that different from what I heard growing up in my Scots-Irish Philadelphia neighborhood. As I’m sure you know, the vowels are most flexible and they give away the game.
A dollar ninety nine
My neighborhood: Uh dol-la nin-dy ni -nuh
Australia Uh dulah noindy ni-on
The “oi” for long-i is something I’ve heard in Applachian regions. The Scots-Irish influence is strong there.
shortly — watching the opening of the MSNBC coverage. Dark suit night for Keith — looks good; he should lose the pinstripes IMNSHO. 😉 Tweety also on the coverage, but no show is perfect…
Back in a while — got to get something to eat and do some grocery shopping…
Omir, I hope you don’t mind: I wrote you in on my ballot, for office of Delegate of the District of Columbia to the US House of Representatives. I voted a straight DCSGP ticket this election, and they didn’t put up a candidate for that particular office. Now, your opponent is the ever-popular and much-loved Eleanor Holmes Norton, so your chances of being sworn in next January are admittedly slim; but she’s running unopposed and we can’t have that, can we? I hope you’ll forgive the gross liberty I took with your good name!
At any rate I hope to momentarily puzzle the election worker who encounters “OMIR THE STORYTELLER” on the write-in line.
Why would I mind? It’s not like I have any chance of winning and would have to move to DC to carry out the duties of the office.
I should write up an election platform now that I’m a candidate, I suppose. No taxes for storytellers, double blogs on Sundays and a government-issued voucher for anything you’d care to drink at the Froggy Bottom Cafe. How’s that?
I am waiting for the polls to close in Texas and then they will start posting the early vote returns. I have a seperate browser open on the state page which will update every 3 minutes for the rest of the night. LOL I am as nervous as a $3 hooker in church on Sunday. LOL
Got the Drambuie and some Merlot. But, I’m not going to open them for a while. I get ugly if I’m drunk when good elections turn bad. And I’ll probably get ugly enough if it happens tonight when I’m sober.
the woman on cnn who thinks this is election is only a vote on George… It is a vote on a congress that has not done it’s job in the last 6 years or more!!!!
Hey everybody, I don’t have cable so I’ll be depending on PBS and Booman Tribune for my election results. It’s nice to have some company! I have no nails left to bite. Also my teenage daughter informed me today that she’s not coming home after school and won’t tell me where she’s going. Yup, today is a red letter day! Historic election — SusanHu returns — And my Lulu figures out there’s not a damn thing I can do about it if she decides to get all independent on me.
Hey all. Just stoppin in for a moment. I’m grabbing a bite to eat and then heading out to watch returns come in.
Turnout today was MASSIVE — St. Louis County is predicting up to 70% turnout. The city turnout seems big. They say Kansas City is big. They ran out of ballots in Joplin — which is in SW Missouri.
This means that Independants came out. Hopefully the rule that independants go for the challenger will hold true.
Hi Mary, Things were pretty busy on the Kansas side too. But A guy I work with on the Missouri side had to leave when he tried to vote before work and was going to try again at lunch time.
her typical centrist self but compared to the rabid freaks in the State Legislature, I’m glad she’s returning to the office. Len Munsil (the Repub running) was a typical “Secure the Border” jerk who got quite the reception in Tucson at the debate. [evil grin]
Howdy all. I’m just so bloody antsy, though I can’t imagine why.
I went to vote this morning to find we really do have paper ballots now. It felt so good. I love the concept of absentee ballots or voting by mail, but I must say, I just love going into my polling place, voting, and getting my “I Voted” sticker. I haven’t missed an election since I turned 18 22 years ago. Granted, my picks have lost about 75% of the time! :>)
Hugs to all on this election eve and let’s pray that our numbers are so great that they can’t steal this one!
Praying along with you and I have not missed an election in 30 years!!!! and have only made the mistake of voting for 1 republican in my life and never will make that mistake again!!!!!
The Aftershock
Which is exactly what we’re going to be feeling for the next few weeks.
Hi Manny! I just posted this photo on the open thread. Click on the pic to see the sign. Do you think my neighbor’s right?
I’m going to run off to buy some Drambuie, but I’ll be right back!
Sorry — I messed up the link – Here it is
I love the Peace Symbol lit up by the shed!
That’s been there since the Peace Marches started before the war — October 2002? or so?
O. I should check the Drambuie — shouldn’t I?
yes. definitely. make sure it’s acceptable for consumption by the rest of us. 🙂
Great to see you! It’s been forever and a day.
It has. I’ve been very busy. But I took today and tomorrow off and Just HAD to drop in here tonight.
I’ll be back as soon as I get the Drambuie.
Thee and me both on the busy front. Writing’s been crazy busy in the best of all possible ways, and extended family the same in the other direction.
I was up at 4:30am to take Imogen to the airport, so the day didn’t get a great start.
Five hours later I’m starting to feel human again.
Oh, and on the way to the airport I missed hitting a Paddymelon by this much. It was one of those brake locking, car starting to run off the road, misses. On my way back home I could see the skid marks and they were impressive. Nothing like a little adrenalin for breakfast.
How’s your day going?
Paddymelon: a small wallaby.
Keres, thanks for expanding my vocabulary yet again.

Opps, wrong blog.
Damn, beaten again.
is it over, is Gore president?
Wow! What a dream. Wouldn’t that be great if all we had to do was wake up?
Don’t tempt me katiebird, I may just go back to sleep now 😉
he is according to my reckoning.
I KNEW you were talented Man E, but that’s just fantastic! Have you informed CNN to stop blathering on about this dubya character yet?
😉
No one pays CNN any attention whatsoever. The sheeple await my decrees with glossy-eyed anticipation each time I hit ‘post’ 😉
I plan on having several and playing burnout, a game in which you are rewarded for crashing cars, as my stress limiter.
Forget the Squirt, gimme a hogshead of that.
I’ll take a pint, but give my hogshead to Omir.
I’d better go grab another real one to match it soon.
shortly — watching the opening of the MSNBC coverage. Dark suit night for Keith — looks good; he should lose the pinstripes IMNSHO. 😉 Tweety also on the coverage, but no show is perfect…
Back in a while — got to get something to eat and do some grocery shopping…
Suit has light pinstripes — very unobtrusive, unlike some of his other suits.
Interesting choice of apparel for Matthews; he’s wearing a blue shirt and red tie. Is he trying to play both sides of the street (as usual)?
I’m not off work yet and the earliest polls back East won’t close for another hour.
But I’m checking in anyway. Gimme a hogshead of Squirt, a remote-control spigot and a cot.

Is this the first official platform of the Partie Raconteur?
Um, yeah! Yeah!! That’s EXACTLY what it is! YEAH! HELL YEAH!!!!
I will be your designer for campaign gear. LOL

Ooooh, I like!
Thank you!!! of course once I have a digiat image of the candidate I can update the design. LOL
There’s one on my Myspace profile.
I am waiting for the polls to close in Texas and then they will start posting the early vote returns. I have a seperate browser open on the state page which will update every 3 minutes for the rest of the night. LOL I am as nervous as a $3 hooker in church on Sunday. LOL
Well, last night I said I was as nervous as a seven-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs, but I guess yours works too. 🙂
Well in the south most cats are in the barn but you never know who is in the pew beside you at church. LOL
This seems as good as time as any to tell everyone that the Froggy Bottom Cafe is now prominently mentioned in the Booman Tribune FAQ.
I’ll have 27 of them there horse tranquilizers, please.
You get about two dozen fours for that poster.
I wish I knew who made it up. I’ve seen it all around the ‘net so I figured it would cool to post it here tonight.
I love it!!!!! and Yes George can kiss my fucking ass but not enjoy it. LOL
The republican in vermont lost his senate seat to an independent!!!!!
Heh. Dems won a suit in heavily democratic Cleveland keeping polling places open until 9:00 pm because of long lines.
To an independant? Or to Bernie the Socialist?
Help out the ex-pats by being more specific. 😀
Bernie but hey one less repugnant in office!!!!
Got the Drambuie and some Merlot. But, I’m not going to open them for a while. I get ugly if I’m drunk when good elections turn bad. And I’ll probably get ugly enough if it happens tonight when I’m sober.
(Please don’t let it turn bad)
I’ve been glued to the tv even though there really isn’t much in the way of news yet — I don’t think even drinking would work for me tonight.
Hi Andi, it’s good to see you.
How’s your web redesign going?
It’s going pretty well. Yesterday we thought of an idea for a Kids page theme that I think will be very appealing. I just wish I was an artist…
back again — made myself leave the tv.
Well you do have an artist in the family — you could describe the idea to her.
the woman on cnn who thinks this is election is only a vote on George… It is a vote on a congress that has not done it’s job in the last 6 years or more!!!!

You can be waiting at the door with a belt in your hand when she arrives home. LOL
I could use a belt of scotch. Guess I’ll have to make do with a glass of wine.
I’m sure she’s doing as a kindness to you — something to distract you from election anxiety.
Yeah she’s killing me with kindness!
Ack, Lil….I am so dreading the teens!
On the other hand, at least she refused to tell you and didn’t lie!
Hi Kama — well as it turned out she went to her dad’s house as she was supposed to and will be home soon. We’ve been IMing. Crisis averted for now.
Ooops…
Whew…sounds like she was just testing the waters. Kids…can’t live with them and can’t shoot ’em. (j/k)
LOST!!!!!! I guess all the face lifts didn’t work. LOL
Yet another major surprise. 🙂
Who do you suppose she’ll blame?
The gays. LOL
Yeah, it’s all their fault. If she’d have listened to them she wouldn’t have looked like a fashion train wreck. 🙂
Amen to that but she was doing the tammy Faye school of charm before Tammy faye addmitted she was a fag hag. LOL

(Please don’t let this go bad)
from your lips to the fsm’s ears 🙂
Hi, Mary! It’s true in many places.
I honestly have been out of the loop since morning on any other races. So was turnout big everywhere?
Turn out is suppose to be high nation wide
At the same level as a presidential election.
Any word on your candidates Refinish? Or are your polls closed yet?
Can I join the party?
Join away!!!!! all liberals are welcome!!!!
Thanks! I’ve actually brought my own but I’ll share.
Frist on cnn make me want to puke!!!! The man is a total asswipe.
Watch Dancing with the Stars instead. God, Mario is a total hottie.
is on MSNBC battling with Tweetie’s idiocy.
He did great. I was so proud of him.
My sister just called me to tell me she loved Howard Dean. I don’t have cable so I’m not seeing him. But I love him too 🙂
(smile)
(and still hoping tonight doesn’t turn bad)
I’m ready to jump out of my skin!
Me too! I decided to wait for the Drambuie until I know if it’s an ugly night or a beautiful night. I don’t want to be drunk if it turns ugly.
yet…
Our polls just closed 10 mins ago so the returns will start to trickle in now. The Minutemen are going down!!! (i hope and pray)
Looks like Janet’s stickin’ around. She been behaving herself since I left?
her typical centrist self but compared to the rabid freaks in the State Legislature, I’m glad she’s returning to the office. Len Munsil (the Repub running) was a typical “Secure the Border” jerk who got quite the reception in Tucson at the debate. [evil grin]
MSNBC says Lieberman won. 🙁
Could it be true?
Time for another beer. (They did say that.)
Don’t know much about him but I am thrilled a democrat is in office and not a repugnant!!!!
damn it now cnn says it is just a projection.
Howdy all. I’m just so bloody antsy, though I can’t imagine why.

it’s not official yet but according to the local paper, he’s the new assessor.
Excellent!
Have fun everyone, I’m heading out.
I’m very happy for you!
hey yeah — now I’ve got my own personal politico in my pocket. 😉
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hooray!!!
WOOHOO!!!
are total assholes. They are singing Rick Santorans praises. The man is a fuckingt bigot and total asswipe!!!
I know! How can anyone like that dude? He is such an evil smug bastard.
Come on over to the clean tables at the new thread.
