We’re all waiting on Montana, even though the outcome in Montana is pretty clear. Tester is up by several thousand, with about 90% reporting. Barring severe insanity, and not discounting any madness that might arise from a likely Virginia recount and a very bitter Lieberman, the Democratic party has gained control of both houses of congress. What are your thoughts on this madness?
Update (4:57 AM) It’s been fun waiting around for these bastards to finally call Montana, but I should probably get to bed. I’m pretty sure Tester won. Somebody should be along shortly to take over. Have a good night. I had fun posting a little again tonight. I hope to do it again soon. I’ll see you then.
Just call it so I can go to sleep! (Too anxious right now.)
I’m delirious. Back from the Patrick Murphy party. What a squeaker that was. And it looks like we have very unexpectantly lost Lois Murphy’s race in the sixth district.
That’s shocking because she was solidly ahead in the polls and we all assumed it was won from the early returns.
PA still delivered four new house seats, a new Senate seat, and held the governor’s mansion. No one kicked more ass than we did.
Now it is off to bed.
P.S. Rahm Emanuel blew a chance to pick up four or five races like FL-13 and NC-08 by spending so much money on Tammy Duckworth, who the party DID NOT WANT. He deserves congratulations on his great victory. But he still screwed up.
Shit. Really? Lois seemed solid. Has she conceded yet?
Quite simple, really.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But then after 2004, I’d made a point of not letting them get too high to begin with.
I’m disappointed with our State gov races, Roger Johnson, our Agriculture Commissioner, was reelected. All other state offices will remain with incumbent Rs, with most of the Ds losing 45-55%.
As far as state Senators and Representative, several long term R went down to defeat. So there was some progress. Majority of the state houses remain in R hands.
Only thing I can say about governor’s races is “Thank God Graholm is term-limited!”
(Just hope Levin doesn’t retire with her deciding to springboard to his seat, just like she did when she was AG to the governor. I can’t stand her, actually suprised she was re-elected.)
if he’s offered a plum enough committee chairmanship. I’m more worried that he’ll be offered Defense Secretary after Rummy goes hunting with Deadeye Dick Cheney — then the governor of CT will appoint an actual Republican and we’re screwed again.
Oh, and one more piece of good news — I’m in first place in my hockey pool. π
Okay, now I’m going to bed…zzzzzzzzzzzzzz…….
If offerred Defense Secretary, doesn’t he have to go thru confirmation hearings? Or am I too tired to think clearly?
if he did — the Dems would have to approve him or they’d really piss him off…
and then the republican gov of Ct chooses his replacement. Not good, assuming the democrats go on to take the senate, as it looks like they will.
The way I read it, assuming wins in VA and MT and Sanders on our side, we have the 51 votes we need to proceed without him.
Hold his breath until he turns blue!
</snark>
Excuse me, aren’t appointments made w/the “advice and consent” of the Senate?
What the hell the hell do you mean “have to approve” him, w/his pro-Iraq stance when most supported Lamont who campaigned in opposition to Iraq? Doesn’t anyone see that makes no sense?
BFD, he gets pissed off! Like he would be the first appointee in history who did not get confirmed!
Give me a break.
First of all,
let’s put this in perspective.
SusanHu frontpaged tonight :o)
MaryB and ClaireM kicked ass in Missouri :o)
BooMan made another fashion statement to the establishment :o)
and…Supersoling is always happy to be wrong.
Look at it this way, you picked the right thing to be wrong about. π
I, too, was extremely pleased to see SusanHu. What was BooMan’s fashion statement?
GQ man
I am less sanguine about MT. The lead is now only 5370 with 84% precincts reported. The margin has bounced around a lot with the last few precincts posted.
The large counties with outstanding votes are Cascade, Gallatin and Yellowstone.
The Montana Secretary of State doesn’t seem to post election night results.
Looking back at the 2004 election county and precinct results(caution – links to 400-page pdf file) it would appear that in these counties the vote was 3 to 2 or worse for Bush as President, and also strongly favoured a Repub for the US House. They did vote Dem for Governor, though.
How do you interpret that?
Yeah, but from what I’ve read, everyone is pissed at bush re: Iraq, so IMO, you can probably throw those old stats out the window.
Fair analysis, Kidspeak!
I’ve had time to look further at those counties’ 2004 results, and compared them to the statewide totals. Cascade County (which may have 15,000 or more votes still to count) followed the statewide pattern on Pres and US House, but was stronger than average Dem for Governor.
Gallatin County, with easily another 20,000 votes to come, was weaker than average for Bush and the Repub in US House, but also weaker than average for the Dem in the Governor race.
The real worry is Yellowstone, where there are probably upwards of 50,000 votes unreported so far. This county was about average in the vote for Governor in 2004, but significantly stronger than average for Bush and the House Repub.
Looking at the county figures so far and paying heed to 2004 results, I’d say Gallatin will go Dem and Cascade may too. The real worry is Yellowstone. Probably Republican. The overall race is too hard to call at the moment, but there’s a strong chance Burns could still win.
Hanging on for results, crunching numbers in that big of a .pdf might do that to you though!
lol
Apologies, I had been exchanging views with Kidspeak earlier and got confused in the excitement of it all…
That’ll do it to you too! lol
The word is (via mcjoan over at orange) is that they had to recount the votes in the Billings, Mt area. Not sure why or if it reflects on any particular candidates. They have stopped counting and gone to bed. Will resume the count in the morning (apparently). Oh. . .it is morning. I think that was about an hour or so ago that she posted that info on the front page over there.
Guess I will go to bed. We don’t know about Id 01, or the Governor’s race here in Idaho yet and it is 3:15AM.
So I guess I will see if I can sleep for a while. Maybe it will be Christmas when I wake up.
So happy I was wrong about stealing the votes (if I was). Whatever the reason for the great outcome. . .Kudos to everyone that worked very hard to help the Dems get elected. Things should be interesting the next 2 years.
I am really tired of hearing all the R talking heads caution the Dems that they are going to have to reach out and play nice with the Repugs. The same guys that extolled the slime-bags bravado and unwillingness to work with Dems at all. Was that just a couple of weeks ago? Why yes, I think it was.
Hugs, and everyone wake up with a smile later this morning,
Shirl
Um, yeah. Play nice with the Repugs. As if they played nice with Dems while they had their six-year “permanent majority.”
I want to see the Democrats start calling things by their real names and then let the Repugs come out and vote against things like fairness, equal opportunity, jobs, the economy, health care and education.
