I had a good night’s sleep. Mr. Nature didn’t snore last night for some reason, and HJ has been sleeping nicely in her crate. Then the gutter guys started working next door (with loud blowers) reeeaaaaly early and woke me up. Ok, not as early as you and FM, but I wanted to spit in their eye anyway.
Every other day a truck pulls up in front of their house and 15 men get out, start up loud machines, and make noise for a couple of hours. The days the men don’t appear, Precious, their 3 lb yappy-ass dog provides the audio portion of the program.
“Is there such a thing as hazardous neighbor pay?”
I wish there was – we’ve been living next to a family we call “The Neighbors From Hell” for about 12 years now. They moved in and immediately built their dog pen at the end of their garage, right under our bedroom window and filled it with baying beagles that they ignored. Then they produced two brats who scream for the sake of screaming when they’re out in the yard while the parents yell at each other. {sigh}
another reason to be glad that I live out in the country where my neighbors are a kids camp and two families that own property but live elsewhere. My sympathies.
about us right now. I raise German Shepherds and have four adults. They come in and out of the house all day. Being out of it for a week though after surgery, and my husband doesn’t “think” dog very well and understand that they need stimulation and interaction and left them outside for the week….I don’t think they are the most popular dogs in the neighborhood right now. They barked at everybody walking by and made lots of noise because ignored dogs have only one goal and that is to not be ignored.
Top o’ the morning, o chillin’ pond-mates. Hope everyone’s set for a lovely day — despite environmental detriments.
It’s actually quite a nice morning here in South Purgatory — clear, breezy, about 65. I’m about to take a wee stroll to the local market for regional puppy-trainer while I can still breathe.
Now I know why local clothing outlets carry down-filled parkas, thick woolen sweaters & fleece-lined boots. It’s cold out, dontcha know.
I can’t figure out if I’m experiencing my first Alabama winter because I have been told that last year was unseasonally warm, or my blood has “thinned” and I have been Alabama climatized.
It’s amazing to me how fast we acclimatize, MT. After just 2+ months in the tropics I can actually understand why the locals call the low 70s ‘cold’. I felt a bit chilly myself this morning — & I’m from a place where -10 in mid-winter is no biggie.
My daughter went to Montgomery yesterday with her beau to help his brother and sister-in-law remove what belongings from their apartment that were salvageable. The building is now condemned and for public safety it is to be immediately bulldozed so they gave the people living there two days to remove their stuff and lots of people to help I guess if you don’t have family or friends who can help you. They were on the first floor of a three story building and most of their belongings stayed indoors but the roof was taken off of the building and then there was the pouring rain coming directly into the building so a lot of their things are water damaged. We are friends with the family that spawned the sister-in-law. They are one of the very few families of Democrats that I know here. The couple also lost a vehicle to the tornado but her parents were able to give them a secondhand truck they had recently purchased for her younger brother who is in the middle of that obnoxious stage and he had become “overly” obnoxious and lost his truck. So there was a homeless truck and a carless couple.
Wow, tough times though. I truly hope they can manage to pull things together & find a good place to be.
I’m assuming they made it through safely, without physical harm & I’m glad for that.
and there were only two people in the building at the time thank God! Both were fine but scared. Its a smaller building, maybe 12 apartments total. The daughter-in-law was at work. They are a tough little couple. Inconvenienced yes, but diminished much probably not. We were told last night that the car insurance company is really coming through for them too on his car. He likes to build cars so his car had a lot of modifications and they are giving him credit for as much of that as they can.
Seems that weather system’s moved out to sea, as well, which I’m also glad for. After devastating the south it also brought damaging floods to the NE – & many of those folks are still cleaning up after devastating floods in June.
OK, I’m headed outside before the sidewalks bake. See you later!
Been reading around. Buhdydharma has a good diary up at Orange that has inspired me to further embrace the victory of the elections and the inevitability that there is going to some investigating going on after January. Because government is napping right now, it sort of sucks with everything we have all endured for six years.
There have been anywhere from 2-6 deer up at the house for the last two weeks or so. It happens every year from November to January — the deer just seem to know where the safe places are.
What always worries me is Giddy’s white tipped tail. I’ve often thought about spray-painting it orange.
Not a bad idea really. I heard about a young mother who went for a short walk in the woods in her backyard after she put her twins in for a nap, and got shot. They said it was her fault for wearing white gloves.
A couple years back, a pony got shot in the owner’s front yard. The number of shooting incidents really went down after that but it would be a rare year when we don’t have at least one drunk getting hurt falling off his deer stand.
I hate to give up any of my cynical bitch cred but I mostly hope for missed shots. The dogs who think of deer season as the world’s biggest doggy bag strenuously disagree.
Don’t they look healthy! In their winter coats already, too.
Thanks for a lovely image, Andi. They’re music in motion, if you ask me.
Can’t help but remember that their presence signifies compassionate intention, according to some native beliefs. ‘Course, leave it to industry to flip that one on its head, too ..
Hello All,
I know this has been discussed before but I have a need to know and can’t find the references.
What is the best camera for a nature photographyer to buy? I love macros, sunsets, landscapes, clouds. I need fast low-light action, excellence of focus. I want an SLR, auto flash, 10 mgp. And if it can fly on it’s own also, that’s okay. LOL
Anybody have any thoughts or ideas or links to where this has been discussed before?
I don’t recall any prior discussion on this, but I did receive some advice a while back from a gentleman who reviews cameras for the photo mags: whatever model you buy, go Olympus. They have the best lenses by far — which is really the most essential part of the camera, no?
Iirc, you can also substitute lenses very easily.
I bought a relatively cheap Olympus digital camera on his advice & I was exceptionally pleased with the image quality as compared to other makes. The Olympus images seemed clearer, sharper & quite free of distortion.
(Disclaimer: he’s not in Olympus’ employ & neither am I, though I wish I was.)
You know those conversations you sometimes find yourself in and you realize that you are missing something? Usually I check to see if my hearing aids are working. That doesn’t work here. I think I’m jumping around from story to story too much. So, please help my poor befuddled self. What was your original flying monkeys comment about?
my original flying monkeys comment was about adding a flying monkey to one of my photos — see thumbnail below — over at the b … and my second comment was about the Wizard of Oz, and how the flying monkeys used to scare me, which I thought you were referring to. After reading Gregory Maguire’s book, I’ve come to a new understanding of the whole situation including the Wicked Witch = Elphaba. 😀
Ah, now I get the space ship and tutu-ed pink walrus comments as well. I’ve been on a writing jag and jumping in and out of the cafes as I could. I didn’t connect the dots. It all begins to make sense. Except for the picture. But I can wait for your shrink to publish her case notes to understand that one. BIG 😉
15-20 minutes but worth the time. I wish they were all identified. BTW I like your Sistine Chapelesque sky just the way it was before all the interlopers appeared.
The movie is wonderful too, though it has a different feel than the show — partially because they had to appeal to a broader audience which might not have seen the show .
Yes, they are. I don’t know whether I want his talent or his travel budget. I’m leaning toward his budget. Even without his talent it would be neat to see those places. Except for the tornado damaged homes, I can see those around here in the spring and summer if I want to.
I made almost the same comment to Andi about that shot. I also loved the rooftops of the tan buildings with the flat roofs. I thought it was a Middle Eastern neighborhood as the picture was loading on my dial up, but once it was fully loaded I realized it wasn’t 1-2 story buildings, but high rises. But there were so many shots to love at that website.
Budget would be a wise choice — you don’t need to waste a wish on talent, Mr. F. I shared your photos link with my housemate’s aunt the other day (I hope that was okay) and, since she is from Ohio but has lived out west for many years, she was just delighted with them.
Go wake up Alpha Dog with a lick to the face.
Morning SN. How’re you doing today?
but I couldn’t get to booman — kept getting a server error and it’s still really, really slow for me.
It was the same with me Andi.
It’s taking forever for it to open a page. Don’t think I’ll be commenting much till it speeds up.
No problem Andi. We’ll be around.
Good morning you two. FM, I see you were up at an unholy hour.
Andi, I knew you weren’t still sleeping, but I figured you were powerless.
Yep I was up for awhile last night, but luckily got back to sleep.
I’d say you had the internet equivalent of drinking too much and dancing on the tables.
is probably accurate, just not in terms of electricity.
I hope BT speeds up — you and FM are going to be ready for naps by the time my comments post.
A good BB gun would have come in handy. 🙂
Damn, I hate being one of those wussy gun-hating liberals at times like these. I used to be pretty accurate with a sling shot though.
That would work too. 🙂
Working on gutters on a Sunday? Freaking weird.
Every other day a truck pulls up in front of their house and 15 men get out, start up loud machines, and make noise for a couple of hours. The days the men don’t appear, Precious, their 3 lb yappy-ass dog provides the audio portion of the program.
Lovely neighbors. Is there such a thing as hazardous neighbor pay?

Reason #1 for locating one’s homestead next to a cemetary: wishing one’s neighbors dead is unnecessary.

I think I feel the first nap of the day calling me.
I’ll check back in awhile.

Low 70s = low 60s.

Very cool. I’m sure the cash will help.

frequency and intensity is linked to global warming. Sadly we won’t have real proof of that until it’s too late.
Personally, I truly believe this is what we’re living through right now — the proof.
Been reading around. Thanks for the recommendation. I could definitely use a shot of optimism.
as usual is bringing a lot of deer to our property since we don’t allow hunting — including these early morning visitors.
The look relieved, and wary both at the same time. Just don’t go walking around your woods with white mittens on.
There have been anywhere from 2-6 deer up at the house for the last two weeks or so. It happens every year from November to January — the deer just seem to know where the safe places are.

Iirc, a guy shot his hunting partner up in our valley last year because the partner was wearing red. The guy thought it was brown.
IMHO, these folks just can’t help themselves.
A couple years back, a pony got shot in the owner’s front yard. The number of shooting incidents really went down after that but it would be a rare year when we don’t have at least one drunk getting hurt falling off his deer stand.
They don’t call it survival of the fittest for nuthin
The real trick is to fall out of the deer stand as you’re taking a shot and still hit the deer.
I hate to give up any of my cynical bitch cred but I mostly hope for missed shots. The dogs who think of deer season as the world’s biggest doggy bag strenuously disagree.
I wonder where RF69 has been and if he’s feeling better. I want to show him a picture of Ben in his Darth Cheney t-shirt.
Pardon me, o lusciousness — what is it about shooting the innocent that could possibly remind you of Darth Cheney?
?
Hmmm, I wonder.
Hello, your lusciousness. 🙂 How is the south of hell treating you these days?
Maybe you could put a little sock on it, in some bright unnatural color.
Hello my friends
So happy to see you again ..
Don’t they look healthy! In their winter coats already, too.
Thanks for a lovely image, Andi. They’re music in motion, if you ask me.
Can’t help but remember that their presence signifies compassionate intention, according to some native beliefs. ‘Course, leave it to industry to flip that one on its head, too ..
for Thanksgiving. Hope everybody has a fabulous Sunday.

Thanks WW. I hadn’t even been considering Olympus. I was looking at Nikon D80 or Canon Rebel. I’ll check them out.
Well Jim does like his nikon a lot and they make great (but expensive) lenses.
Hello, everyone! Anyone awake, or is everybody napping or eating?
I’m thinking about thinking about dinner.
I was just playing w/ flying monkeys.
Those flying monkeys scared the bejeezus out of me as a kid.
But I’ve come to realize that they’re not so bad … same w/ Elphaba. 🙂
You know those conversations you sometimes find yourself in and you realize that you are missing something? Usually I check to see if my hearing aids are working. That doesn’t work here. the cafe is a weird and wonderful space … I’m sure my case notes would look rather mundane … 😛
canadian skies are so damned crowded.
They are getting worse every day it seems too … 😉
you could make the skies much safer by turning off comments in that thread.
but it was kinda fun … and you know, you started it! 😛
Sorry about the delay responding. I was messing with a diary. I liked you pictures, especially poor Sniff looks he misses his walks.
I went from thinking to acting on dinner.
Correct photo credit: Second Nature took the picture of Sniff.
Oops! You know us cat people, all dogs look alike.
because you got it right — Sniff is my dog. But Second Nature took the picture when she came to visit this summer.
How many ways did I mess that up?
mistakes don’t count — or at least I don’t count them.
And seems like the confusion was fair — you weren’t hanging around the cafe this summer so you wouldn’t have known she came for a visit.
You mean you didn’t fill them in on the gruesome details when you saw teach and kidspeak in Chicago? I’m crushed.
They talked about you plenty, but I don’t remember the trip coming up.
if you had been there ….
(gruesome?)
I don’t know, gruesome came to mind. Maybe my 17 lb buffet plate at the deli. That was gruesome—-ly huge.
I thought it was a commentary on the futon.
What do you do for walkies during gun season?
We still walk — just stick mostly to our property or the parts of the camp where there aren’t any hunters.
Even if you’re on dialup this is worth the time.

Wow! The volcano was great and then I scrolled down! How’d you find these?

Must have taken a long time for those to load … 🙂
15-20 minutes but worth the time. I wish they were all identified. BTW I like your Sistine Chapelesque sky just the way it was before all the interlopers appeared.
be nice to know where they were taken … You know, you were right when you warned me all those many months ago about the dark arts … lol
Gorgeous!
Have you watched it all yet? And if you have, have you watched Serenity too?
It’s wonderful! I have an episode and a half left, and then the movie. I’ve been savoring a bit, knowing this is all I get.
The movie is wonderful too, though it has a different feel than the show — partially because they had to appeal to a broader audience which might not have seen the show .

The photo of the little island of trees where you can’t tell sky from water (?) is surreal.
I made almost the same comment to Andi about that shot. I also loved the rooftops of the tan buildings with the flat roofs. Aw gee shucks (blushing), of course it was okay. I am thrilled that she enjoyed them, silly.
I can’t quite put my finger on which member of the Bush administration it is. Is it Gonzales or is it the toad at HHS?
I’m thinking Gonzales…
That’s a beady-eyed fella.
How have you been doing?
over here whether you want it or not.
