South Dakota legislature to reintroduce a bill banning abortion only a few short months after voters in a state-wide referendum rejected the previous ban:
PIERRE — Lawmakers confirmed Friday that a bill banning most abortions in South Dakota will be introduced again in the Legislature, and it will contain exceptions for rape, incest and the health of women. […]
A measure that would have banned all abortions except those necessary to save women’s lives was passed last year, but it was referred to the ballot and voters ultimately rejected it.
The head of Planned Parenthood in Sioux Falls said she is disappointed that the South Dakota Legislature will once again consider a bill to ban most abortions in the state.
Kate Looby said Friday it’s apparent lawmakers didn’t get the message in the last election when voters rejected an abortion ban by a margin of 56 percent to 44 percent.
“The voters just spoke on this issue in November, and the message they were sending was, ‘We don’t want the government involved in this very personal, private family issue,’ and apparently some of the legislators just can’t seem to stay out of private issues that families are facing and deal with,” Looby said.
Who cares what 56% of the state’s citizens want? Obviously, not these hard-line obsessed Republican politicans. These radical right wing Republicans won’t ever stop in their drive to control every aspect of women’s reporductive systems. Not that they are alone in hoping the Supreme Court will reverse Roe v. Wade if one of these totla abortion ban laws is passed. Here are examples of similar legislation being proposed in Texas and in Virginia by Republicans, naturally. In upholdong their version of Judeo-Christian values, they can’t wait until the day comes they can sentence abortion providers and the women who have abortions to death for their “crimes.”
That’s the culture of life for you. It means they control your life, not you.
ND has been busy as well…
This Prospect article looks at the wording of a new GA bill. Stronger language and appears to be prepared to be taken to the SC.
If they are approved, not only will the Georgia bill (and others) be shot up the line to a now-welcoming SCOTUS, primed to overturn Roe, these bills will lay the groundwork for outlawing contraception. Of course, many of the legislators who will vote for these anti-female horrors will not recognize that banning contraception is one of the ultimate goals of the people behind these bills.
well yes that is one of the goals. OVer turn Griswold.
The other goal is personhood for the fetus, from conception. Not even implantation… but conception. And then criminalisation for both doctors and women.
The incoming Freshman group, Democrats for Life gained 6 to their ranks.
It is not even certain they can get stem cell passed. Shuler who in facile fashion promised (before he was elected) to vote for embryonic stem cell if it used material already existing, somehow just could not vote for the bill that would use already existing in vitro material. They don’t have a veto proof majority in the House. And there is a scenario, even poor addled Kos figured this one out, that Casey could be the swing vote.
I think the personhood of zygotes will come first. If a fertilized egg is legally a person, what will make the outlawing of contraception easier – if not automatic.
After all, aren’t doctors who prescribe contraceptives and women who use them messing with the righteous activities of keeping women in the holy corps of the barefoot and pregnant? Aren’t such doctors and women in fact murderers? Surely we would all be better off if those sinners could be stripped of their citizenship, removed from their livelihood, and imprisoned.
The Georgia bill’s lies about the negative effects of abortion are just evil. Similarly twisted ideas are being circulated about contraceptives, too. I wish I still had this one howler I got related to the insanity. When I did my classes on sexual development, one of my students brought me a leaflet describing how condoms would “kill the baby you’ve already made” – not to mention the footnote that condoms were responsible for erectile dysfunction!!
I wanted to burst out singing a la Python “every sperm is sacred.” I did add those to my list of stunningly stupid ideas that college students have about sex.
from fertilization onwards is already established law in some states, including here in Texas since 2003. Killing a zygote/embryo/fetus is a homicide charge for anyone except [1] the pregnant woman herself or [2] a physician in the course of performing a “lawful procedure.”
That’s why I posted Texas OK’s Death Penalty for Abortion Providers here in August, 2005.
That’s why Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott was asked for an official opinion to clarify whether a doctor who failed to obtain notarized parental consent for a minor’s abortion (thereby performing an “unlawful” procedure) could be prosecuted for capital murder. This week Abbott finally issued his opinion, and said no. But that opinion is non-binding, and cannot prevent a prosecutor from filing charges against a physician for “homicide of an individual less than six years of age.”
However, because the AG has issued an opinion, the legislature now will feel no pressure to amend the existing law.
This is a bit OT, but…
EEWWWW, I just turned on c-span and see there is a panel on “State of Conservatism.” Panelists are:

I usually try to refrain from swear words when making comments directed at people, but what a conflation of bitches!!
There are some really scary people in this country. I feel we’re just about an hour from fascism, on a 24-hour clock.
