Dave Neiwert’s holding a fundraiser at his blog Orcinus. Like many, he’s suffered the ill effects of the great blogroll purge, which is a shame because he is, bar none, one of the best writers on the intertubes. He covers a topic in depth that few in the mainstream media even acknowledge, the rise of right wing extremism and its effects on our society. Not only that, but his coverage of that subject is as deep in its analysis as it is broad in scope. I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned from reading him over the past several years. His recent series on the mainstreaming of right wing eliminationist rhetoric, “”Eliminationism in America”, is the definitive online study, as were his earlier series “The Rise of Pseudo-Fascism” (caution: pdf link) and “Rush, Newspeak and Fascism: An Exegesis” (also a pdf file). More than just a valuable resource, his is an essential voice in the online progressive movement.
If you have some spare change to throw his way please do so at the paypal link in the left hand margin of his blog’s home page. Thanks.
has anyone gotten to the bottom of the blog-roll purge. the real reason?
Maybe if Ornicus posted over here I might be inclined to send a little $$ his way. Anyway..Booman is pretty far down on the list of his blog-roll.
Orcinus has been a regular stop for me for a very long time. Most of the series you mention that have been put up there are invaluable reference materials. They are not just topical, they have a much broader perspective. I have printed out several of these series and they are sitting in binders on my bookshelf. With the seeping of many elements of right wing extremism into our daily national political discourse, it is all the more important that we understand its origins, methodologies and motivations. It would be rare that you leave Orcinus without gleaning some nugget that you did not arrive with. The writing is intelligent, detailed, thoroughly researched and presented in a very thought provoking manner.
Dave’s site is a worthy recipient for anything you have in your spare change jar. The blog world would be a little less informed without him. If you haven’t been to Orcinus, give it a look. I think you will agree that it is worthy.
OK, did so. Thanks for the heads up!
Not too long ago David Goldstein of the inimitable HorsesAss blog had to do a fundraiser. He had just started a regular (although part-time) non-blogging gig, he needed a new computer monitor, and the bills were kinda piling up. It was worth a few bucks to keep Goldy around. He’s one of the best — maybe the best — on the net when it comes to Seattle-area politics, and it’s entertaining watching the ecosystem of trolls that’s grown up in the comments section regularly get smacked down.
The problem is, full-time blogging is basically writing a diary as your day job. It’s great for advocacy and therapy but we’re still figuring out how to make it pay the bills. I’m lucky enough (so far) to have a full time job doing something else, and I’m not trying to support myself with this. Good thing too, because if you take a look at my blog it’s obvious I’d starve.
Steven:
Thanks so much for the link and the very kind comments, both in this post and your earlier post regarding the Kos exiles.
FWIW, I don’t post comments on other sites much at all these days. Between blogging, writing books and freelance articles, and being a stay-at-home dad, I just don’t have the time or energy to do so anymore. I lurk a lot, though.
Dave, it was my pleasure.
Good luck with your fund raiser.
