“Let me assure you of one thing: the United States under this administration will never- never– let terrorism or fear of terrorism determine its foreign policy.” – Vice-President George H.W. Bush, on the campaign trail 10/27/84, just ten days before his re-election.
For a long time that quote was mainly of interest as one of many promises Bush made not to negotiate with terrorists prior to his running an off the books program through The Enterprise to sell arms to Iran as ransom for hostages and then to illegally divert the profits to the Contras. But, in light of his son’s foreign policy, which is expressly dictated by terrorism and fear of terrorism, I find it richly ironic.
