It all started last Friday when Bruce Fein, a former Reagan official on Bill Moyer’s Journal argued that impeachement was necessary to save the constitution. That was some pretty powerful stuff!!
Then this week, Paul Craig Roberts, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan administration, Associate Editor of the Wall Street Journal editorial page and Contributing Editor of National Review, wrote a column titled Impeach Now or Face the End of Constitutional Democracy (you have to scroll down over the ad about Hillary being a Republican).
When conservatives like Fein and Roberts are sounding the alarm bells, I wonder if we shouldn’t listen??
Here’s a few excepts from Roberts column:
Unless Congress immediately impeaches Bush and Cheney, a year from now the US could be a dictatorial police state at war with Iran.
Bush has put in place all the necessary measures for dictatorship in the form of “executive orders” that are triggered whenever Bush declares a national emergency.
Many attentive people believe that the reason the Bush administration will not bow to expert advice and public opinion and begin withdrawing US troops from Iraq is that the administration intends to rescue its unpopular position with false flag operations that can be used to expand the war to Iran.
Think about it. If another 9/11-type “security failure” were not in the works, why would Homeland Security czar Chertoff go to the trouble of convincing the Chicago Tribune that Americans have become complacent about terrorist threats and that he has “a gut feeling” that America will soon be hit hard?
Why would Republican warmonger Rick Santorum say on the Hugh Hewitt radio show that “between now and November, a lot of things are going to happen, and I believe that by this time next year, the American public’s (sic) going to have a very different view of this war.”
Ask yourself: Would a government that has lied us into two wars and is working to lie us into an attack on Iran shrink from staging “terrorist” attacks in order to remove opposition to its agenda?
The American constitutional system is near to being overthrown. Are coming “terrorist” events of which Chertoff warns and Santorum promises the means for overthrowing our constitutional democracy?
You can listen to Thom Hartman from Air America interview Roberts last Thursday here. He makes a strong case by talking about the executive orders that are in place NOW for martial law and the idea that it is inconceivable that Cheney and Rove would just be content to sit back and watch the Republicans implode in 2008.
Remember, Cheney and Rove don’t react to reality – they create it.
Makes you wonder if these guys who have spent years inside Republican circles might know/see something coming that the rest of us are missing.
If you haven’t already seen the BBC documentary The Power of Nightmares, I HIGHLY recommend that you do.
Ah,yes, there is another!
Google search Strategic Communications Laboratories.
yep, the olde guarde’s getting scared…roberts has long been at odds with the BushCo™ actions in iraq, but the unfortunate reality of his otherwise excellent piece, is that he allows himself, and it, to be marginalized by invoking Godwin’s Law.
it’s a shame, really, because the sooner, rather than later, people wake up and see the elephant in the living room, the better off we’re all going to be.

Born in Palestine in 1941, Azzam moved to Jordan and then to Saudi Arabia before migrating to Pakistan at the start of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. In Peshawar, Azzam set up the Office of Services of the Holy Warriors (Mujahideen) and set about re-igniting the Islamic power rage against those non-Islamic powers that had conspired against Islam since before the Crusades. Darting off with not much more than a storefront in Peshawar, Azzam would ultimately succeed in rejuvenating the concept of jihad among the Arab masses.
Those who met Azzam were dazzled by his spellbinding oratorical skills, his capabilities as a military strategist, his religious leadership, and his interminable energy. Azzam helped bring about the mobilization of the Muslim Brotherhood movement more than any other leader. Today, the military wing of Hamas in the West Bank is called the Abdellah Azzam Brigades.

"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
This is the truth as far as I can tell.
It is the recent executive order by Bush that triggered Paul Roberts writing his article: http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/07/20070717-3.html
The executive order is talked about in lasthorseman’s recommended diary: http://www.boomantribune.com/?op=displaystory;sid=2007/7/21/214517/880
And Daily Kos has two excellent diaries on the subject:

Hey you Guys, I am aboard the impeachment train…I always have been…I actually want to impeach the nut and his adm. from the very get go when they were not but a few months into the running of our government. Now just how are we gonna get the job done???!!! If we had done this early on like I had wanted, we would not be here today doing this capitulation. This was even before 911. It started when I knew they were bankrupting our nation which is one of the impeachment-ables mentioned in the constitution.
Now we have gotten to this state of affairs. I want to know when is it that we are going to take back America or get into the streets of America in our home towns and say so. Apparently writing to our designated persons in DC is not getting the job done.
Most of you are probably aware that CNN is doing “youtube” debates with the presidential candidates. I hadn’t paid much attention, because I’m not that interested in debates. And apparently the CNN news team will choose the questions to be asked, which likely means the whole thing will be drivel. But on youtube you can vote for the questions you think are most important and at least John Edwards has agreed to answer the top 2 voted questions in a live webcast after the debate. I’m not so concerned about having the candidates answer these questions as I am in getting the message out to the media about what is important to the people of this country.
If you want to see which questions are polling at the top, go here.
If you want to see the top 10 questions about impeachment, go here.
As the people and so many republicans talk impeachment, where is our democratic congress?
I think the democrats are delusional if they think they can just “look” busy over the next year and a half and Cheney/Rove will sit by and watch the republican party get blown off the map in 08.
