The “unity” government has fallen apart (a major bloc of Sunnis left this time), 13 more people died in a suicide car bomb attack Thursday, and 142 Iraqis were reported killed or found dead Wednesday according to the Associated Press.
Good thing Yearly Kos isn’t being held in Baghdad. Or Mosul, Kirkuk, Tikrit, Ramallah, Fallujah, Karbala, Basra …
The Iraqis are not stupid, at least for certain values of stupid. They are aware of the political situation in the US, and they know that September will bring Gen. Petraeus’ report of sunshine and roses in the streets of Baghdad. The only way they are going to get us to leave is if their government implodes so our government can’t claim any political progress is going to be made.
If I was a member of the Iraqi parliament, I’d walk out, too. The sooner the Americans are gone, the sooner I could get to fighting the real enemy: my neighbors.
And as much as I hate to be an asshole about this, as I watch continuing coverage of the 35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis (a bridge I’ve been on several times when I used to live in Eden Prairie up there) I can’t help but thinking the following:
Yeah, it’s terrible that this happened. We’re seeing the media ask serious questions about how this happened, how this was allowed to happen, and what could have been done to prevent it. The state and federal government in Minnesota is being asked some really uncomfortable questions.
So where were you media fuckers during 2002-2003? You should have been asking the same questions about Iraq, with the same level of attention, if not more. So while it’s pretty tragic to see people die because of a collapsing bridge during rush hour and that of course people want answers and accountability for the casualties, the same folks wave their hands and chalk up the daily deaths in Iraq to just some more raghead sunzabitches getting blown up, happens all the time, right?
God I’m just fourteen kinds of upset this morning.
Saddam was behind 9/11. Mushroom clouds. Etc.
