It’s now Official
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has resigned, an official said on Monday, ending a controversial tenure as chief law enforcement officer that blemished the administration of President George W. Bush.
Bush now needs another firewall. OMG, Will it be Chertoff?
More generally poor reporting.
How could ANYTHING blemish THIS administration?
Rumor has it that Skeletor (aka Michael Chertoff) will be his replacement…
THAT’S certainly encouraging.
Replace a bumbling, incompetent clown with a viciously effective ectomorph asshole.
JUST what I had hoped for.
I wonder if this is the overall Ratpub direction writ medium small.
Chertoff for Gonzo, Giuliani for Butch.
Hmmmm….
At least the fun part would be over. And then we could begin to laugh the laugh that does not mean “Ha ha” in earnest.
AG
I’ve come to the conclusion that there are no good developments with this bunch.
OT, but I enjoyed your piece about ‘REAL victims’ that you posted elsewhere.
Have you seen the ACLU ad?
On Leadersheep – that’s Reid and Pelosi – whatever Bush wants, he gets.
And I thought I was the only one who called him Skeletor. Heh.
Seriously, what a crappy pick! But honestly, who’d actually be WILLING to succeed him but another do-nothing crony? When Ashcroft, of ALL people, does not go far enough for this thugocracy we call an administration, then you know something is wrong.
I just saw that Paul Clement will be the acting AG for now. I don’t know if that means he will eventually be put forth for confirmation or what.
How long can they let the nom/confirmation process drag out with him in place? Is that a way for them to put another douchebag in without confirmation?
In a “word,” prolly. 🙂 Who’s Clement, anyway? I feel so ignorant for asking, but I’d love to know.
And I’d also love to know–what’s really going on? Why now? I mean, I know–good riddance to bad rubbish–but all the rats scattering off this particular ship NOW?
How very interesting…
Why now?
Makes sense to me.
And also following script will be our wonderful Senate Democrats, who will issue several tough-sounding statements, make a bit of a stink during the hearings (the cameras will be on, after all) and then promptly proceed to assume the position.
Oh–let’s not forget: Hillary will lay back in the cut, waiting for Barack to cast his worthless but correct vote, while John will talk about what he would have done if he was still there.
Blather. Rinse. Repeat.
I dunno; I’m betting on a lineal descendent of Torquemada.
or it could be Jeb; there’s a precedent for that.
Whoever it is, this will NOT end well.
Gonzales is a tough act to follow…scarily enough.
One of the very few things I have confidence in WRT the Shrubberies is their ability to make the outcome not only worse than we predict, but in fact worse than we can IMAGINE.
They have never let me down on this.
Unless the President nominates somebody not already in the Administration, the Dems should make the GOP earn every vote in the Senate.
It should be the shortest confirmation in history, because every single Democratic Senator and concerned GOP Senator should do the following:
It should go something like this.
Senator: “I have one single question for you. Do you plan to reverse the illegal surveillance actions of this Administration?”
If the answer is anything other than an unequivocal “yes” then the vote should be “no.” That’s it. The entire hearing would take ten minutes.
The committee can then vote, and Bush can then nominate people until we get somebody who will say “Yes” to the question.
That’s it. That’s all it would take.
Keep Dreaming. We’d need a second party for that to happen.
Senator Schumer said that “Democrats will not obstruct or impede a nominee who we are confident will put the rule of law above political considerations.”
OK, but that sentence has me livid!
Obstruct? Impede?
How about–doing your Constitutional duty? Look it up!
I could have come up a million and two better in ways to express the above thought without running headlong into wingnut themes and talking points. Idiot!
Sheesh–we can’t communicate at ALL. But of course, that’s because we have nothing good to say. When you’re cowering in fear of this absolute moron, it leaves precious little time to speak in clear, convincing language.
Yes, but you don’t WANT to repeat the wingnut themes and talking points.
This message wasn’t for us, it was for the wingnuts, and it said “Don’t worry, we won’t do anything crazy that might get in the way of the plan, even if we have to pretend we’re asking awkward questions. We’re all on the same side here. Shrub Heil!”
(((Smacks Forehead)))
I keep on forgetting. When will I ever learn…?!?!?!
“Even my worst days as attorney general have been better than my father’s best days,” Gonzales said.
For some reason, this quote just wrong. And thank god, Gonzo has finally called it quits. Now, the only person with a law degree and as stupid as Gonzo is Kris Kobach.
Good. Now Congressional Dems won’t be able to sidetrack pressure for Bush and Cheney to get impeached by introducing bills for Gonzales’s impeachment, as they had been doing.
I think this is a surprise to almost everyone, except Cenk Uygur. He predicted that Gonzales would resign about now when Rove resigned. The two resignations are obviously tied together.
