Welcome back.
This week we’ll be continuing with our 5×7 painting of Arizona’s Grand Canyon. The photo of our subject is seen in the photo directly below. (For those new to this series, I will be using my usual acrylics.)
When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.
Since that time I have continued to work on the painting. I have made changes to almost every surface except for the sky. I have once again changed the foreground butte adding back dark shadows that were eliminated earlier. These are more in keeping with those in the original photo.
There is now more red in the dark shadowed areas. Also, pink has been painted on the buttes far to the rear. I have also added highlights to the medium distance buttes and closed in some areas where too much dark shadow appeared.
I now consider the painting to be finished. The current state of the painting appears in the photo directly below.
For the frame fetishists amongst us, I have placed it in a 5×7 frame that I had. It is seen directly below.
Next week I’ll start with an entirely new piece in an 8×10 format. That’s about it for now, see you next week.
As always, feel free to post your own works below.
Paint me a picture of your thoughts.
Looks Great! Frame works for me, somehow seems to make the eye zoom right into the canyon. 8×10 next week…moving up in the world!
Good afternoon Boran,
I like it. And you work fast too. No messing around :o)
The shadows in the canyons look like reflections of the clouds and that’s sort of what I meant last week (or the week before?) when i mentioned how the earth and sky seem like inverted reflections of each other.
The frame? Well, to be honest, I don’t care for it much even though Meagert is right that it focuses attention on the painting, which is a good thing. My preference would be something more rustic to match the rugged nature of the canyon. But I’m not complaining! :o)
And since you have an invitation to post stuff, here’s a couple I finished recently.
This one is a ’57 Chevrolet that I flamed. I love this picture because the hood itself, with the big 50’s style chrome ornaments and the Chevrolet badge, is just as much art as anything I added. It has a cool retro feel to it, I think. Too bad I didn’t center it better in the photo.
This one is a closeup of a flamed Chevy truck. I like it because it shows the shadows and the slight 3-d quality of the airbrushing.
I guess you could say I’m a flaming idiot sometimes! :o)
Take care
I wish I knew you when I had the old ’58 Pontiac Chieftan….
Great picture and I pull with the frame myself. 8 X 10? We are talking in feet aren’t we Boran. š
Super it’s good to see you again, and your art work is spectacular. Ya know, you should do as Boran, and show a from the beginning to the end. hint, hint. š
Thanks Mr. Man,
I remember Tampopo making a similar hint :o)
I might do something like that in the future. I have a ’35 Willys to flame coming up soon. I’m just not big on writing diaries anymore. It’s cool to post a few pics here and there though, and Boran is most generous to give up some of his space.
Who said a thing about writing a dairy. A sentence here and a picture. Another sentence there and a picture.
If you don’t want to answer each and every post, just put a post at the end and say thanks to everyone.
If you haven’t realized it, I would love to get you back over here posting on your art. I figure once we get the art, then we can go onto other things. Devious SOB aren’t I. š
S.O.B.? Maybe. But I don’t think you have any devious in you.
I’ll keep your idea in mind FM…and thanks :o)
I would respectfully concur with FM, Mr.Super. Post early, post often. Very cool flame jobs! Post all you like! As to the old iron, got any late 40s, early 50s stuff? I’m a sucker for Hudson and Nash bathtub types.
What Boran said. You see Super we all love your art, but more importantly, we all love to have Super around.
So if you need any encouragement, I’ll start having George do his expressionist paw paintings. It’s no where in league with anyone here, but he does love to show his talent. š
Anyway if you decide to or not, and we would never push, we’ll just be sitting quietly saying Super, Super, SUPER!!!!
No pressure thought. š
Holy M-M-M-Moly dude! LoL Take it easy. I’d like to consider myself a modest guy and you’re making me blush. Knock it off! ;o)
OK Super. A little thick huh. š
I’ll end it with just glad to see you around.
Glad to be here every now and then.
Does George brush with his right or left paw? Or all four? That’s a video I’d love to see :o)
I sort of help him out. I dip him in everything and just rub him arround. I guess when he tries to stand up, you could say he’s all dexterous. Although when he’s painting I don’t think it’s a loss at it that way. More like a pain in his ass really. If I’m not mistaken, that’s falls into line with the way I paint. š
Well got to get going, see ya later super.
You’re a trip FM :o) I bet george thinks you’re a trip too, you living vicariously through his artistic efforts LOL
Take it easy :o)
Hi,
sadly I haven’t had the oportunity yet to work on anything that fits that description. But I’ve got my fingers crossed :o)
And I share your love of Hudsons. Almost bought one once when I was about 19. My Pop and me stopped to get gas off the L.I. Expressway and there was a big long, skirted Hornet sitting there for sale. I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. But neither one of us was in a position when it came down to it to buy it…for me! Sadness :o/
Sure would be nice to come across a ’49 or ’50 Merc sled to flame out. One of these days :o)
I shot this a few years ago in Venice California.

Groovy!
If you don’t mind. I’ll post a little of my handiwork here this week too.
I’ve been wanting to build guitars lately, what with all the tools, and time I have, but the startup cost is pretty high in wood, and specialty tools. Down at my local guitar shop, there’s a bunch of flatpickers, and rockers. What I do have is a bunch of leather and my tools from the old leather shop days. Anyways, two and two added up to trying to sell some guitar straps to pay for guitar wood. Seemed like an idea, so here’s one of them….
Wow meagert you make that. KEWL!
Thanks, sorry for the big pic Boran, and others, but that’s how it came out.
Some of the old hippy skills might payoff again after 40 years later….lol
The big pic came out wonderful, and there’s nothing to worry about. However, WoW again. š
Wow!
Forget the guitars Meagert. That’s a beautiful piece of handiwork right there.
Excellent work, meagert! Post all you like!
Very nice work from an old hippy.
I used to do a lot of leather work in the days also. But guitar making, wow, that`s something else.
Part “A” goes into Part “B”, or so I am told…lol
Gotta go. Everyone have a good night.
Hi Boran2
Great finale.
I`m looking forward already to the large format, (hah)
I`m glad you didn`t redo the clouds as I found them to be exceptional in the guest blog you did.
Hi FM
Hey Super, I left a canvas to fantasize on for you oldies lovers out there.
A shaved & channeled chopped Merc.
Thanks, Knucklehead.
The Merc, a 49 or 50, right?
That looks like a ’49. What a righteous ride. Perfect just the way it is.
Can I have one for Christmas, Santy Claus? :o)
Goodnight
