Hillary Clinton and 29 other senators wrote to President Bush yesterday to tell him he has no congressional authority for war with Iran, … Chris Dodd of Connecticut added his support, while Barack Obama of Illinois and Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware declined.
At least they seem to be taking the issue more seriously than some of their more militaristic comments might suggest. Better. Definitely better.
Regime change as our standard policy toward everyone we don’t like is so endemic of the Bush foreign policy’s basic lunacy. There’s no better way to make a rat dangerous than to corner it.

Much as I hate to let Bush off the hook for anything at all, regime change against any and all governments we don’t like started in the 1950s and has been a favorite pastime of both Republicans and Democrats. And then they discovered that usually they could just get their way by sending the IMF and World Bank to act as their collection agent thugs, so that changing the regime became less important.
But Bush so did not come up with this strategy, he’s just far less circumspect about using it. It was always this bad and this stupid, just not always as directly harmful to our own interests.
Think there’s a subtle jab at Bill Clinton’s Iraq regime change directive from the 1990’s?
it doesn’t have to be subtle. it’s a legitimate jab.
