WASHINGTON (AP) 1 minuut ago – The Bush administration has told a federal judge it was not obligated to preserve videotapes of CIA interrogations of suspected terrorists and urged the court not to look into the tapes’ destruction.
Judge Henry H. Kennedy that demanding information about the tapes would interfere with current investigations by Congress and the Justice Department.
It is the first time the government has addressed the issue of the videotapes in court.
Kennedy ordered the Bush administration in June 2005 to safeguard “all evidence and information regarding the torture, mistreatment, and abuse of detainees now at the United States Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay.”
Five months later, the CIA destroyed the interrogation videos.
Government lawyers told Kennedy the tapes were not covered by his court order because Abu Zubaydah and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri — the suspected terrorists whose interrogations were videotaped and then destroyed — were not at the Guantanamo military prison in Cuba.
The men were being held overseas in a network of secret CIA prisons. By the time President Bush acknowledged the existence of those prisons and the prisoners were transferred to Guantanamo, the tapes had been destroyed.
about secrecy. And you know what? I don’t think any secret has stayed a secret (except perhaps, who killed JFK). So we know now, probably because a bunch of discontents within the bubble bush decided we SHOULD know, a lot of things that Cheney thought would STAY in bubble bush. The whole Plame thing is really open to us. We know that Cheney decided the attack. We know the whole attorney gate thing, we know that Rove decided that since he liked to play dirty he would dirty the whole justice department in his attempt to win spots for rethugs. We know about rendition and the CIA and torture. We know all of these things are extralegal and problematic. But we don’t know WHY the rethugs are still carrying water for bubble bush. Are they stupid, thuggish, or caught in their own illusions? If we could know, perhaps we would have a fulcrum to move them off that spot.
It’s pretty obvious what it takes to lose the right to commit any crime. Rudy didn’t fall out of their good graces until stories about his affair, and using government money to pay for the affair, came out.
Pathetic isn’t it? Maybe the solution is to start some rumors? I hate what that would do to our sorry state of political discourse.
cia tapes?…what cia tapes?

INDIANAPOLIS – Rep. Julia Carson, the first black and first woman to represent Indianapolis in Congress, died Saturday, a family spokeswoman said. She was 69.
Carson died after a battle with lung cancer, spokeswoman Vanessa Summer said.
Carson was first elected to Congress in 1996. She championed children’s issues, women’s rights and efforts to reduce homelessness and was a staunch opponent of the war in Iraq.
“Julia Carson overcame much and accomplished much, and devoted her life to helping other people do the same,” Sen. Evan Bayh, an Indiana Democrat, said in a statement. “She was elected to important public offices, but never forgot who she was, where she came from or who she was there to serve.”
Carson was a staunch opponent of the war in Iraq and told hundreds of people at a rally in downtown Indianapolis just weeks before the 2003 invasion that it was an act of aggression only to protect U.S. oil interests.
“Truly, it is all in the name of greed and truly in the name of war,” she said. “We should have learned by the Vietnam War, but we did not.”
"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
