I haven’t given in to the temptation yet…I’m still finishing some fancy-schmancy socks up, and I think I need a smaller set of circular needles to start it, so I’m just eyeing the swatch I knit up longingly. 🙂
Nope I’m sleepy everyday, but today more so. I kept waking up all night. First cup down, but I can’t tell a difference. Maybe a second cup will help. 🙂
I was at Starbucks and they had this great little Celtic band there and the free coffee drinks were flowing courtesy of my d-i-l and I just couldn’t stop myself.
you could have a little drinking game – every time someone calls him a liar you have to swig some, I guess, green tea with honey?
My friend has a video of the Grinch and I thought how cute that was that a grown man had a Grinch video – until he told me that in college they played a drinking game to it – whenever they heard the word “who”….
Good morning Cabin Girl! We’ve been TV free since fall 2006 and Moyers is one of the few we miss. I’ve been thinking about putting up a UHF antenna so we could get PBS. (We miss the mysteries too.)
Bill Moyers, Keith Olbermann, and the HBO series The Wire are about the only things I watch on teevee with any regularity. (Occassionally Family Guy episodes slip in there too – that show is just so wrong, though.)
Other than those, I could live without teevee too.
It always amazes me how cold and windy cities can be – I always think tall buildings should block the wind, not create it. (I guess there’s a reason I didn’t like my physics class…)
I actually walked out of my first physics exam in tears in college. I just knew I was going to fail and not get into the college of pharmacy. Then I learned about the magic of grading on a curve: my 67% was a B+.
No, it seems to be how the wind gets directed between the taller buildings downtown. It just about knocks me off my feet when its around zero up there. Reminds me of Chicago in the spring;-)
Back in the days when NYC got truly cold & the wind just whipped between those buildings, a friend from Wisconsin told me that the best thing to do in a frigid wind was to relax the muscles as much as possible. It helps one feel warmer.
After almost 30 years of heating with wood, I have developed the ability to just not see the dust and dirt. And besides, I always look forward to my yearly visit from Pete the Sweep who is way more charming than Dick Van Dyke. 🙂
Yeah, Pete’s an ok guy. I went to his house once years ago to see his corncob pellet stove. It was pretty amazing the amount of heat that came from those little rabbit-like pellets. As I remember, he couldn’t find them any closer than St. Louis. I wonder if the distribution problem has been alleviated?
I had to abandon my Vermont Castings wood stove to prior landlord (debt paid) & am truly heartbroken.
There’s absolutely nothing like a good wood stove & VC stoves are truly works of art.
Lovely image up above, Andi. Hope everyone’s doing well this morning.
I do appreciate your compliments, though I must say I feel somewhat less on the ball these days than in the past. I’m starting in on ginkgo biloba in efforts to salvage brain function.
Hi Andi. I’m just hanging out in the cafe while trying to get brave enough to go outside and take pictures of yarn and half-completed socks and stuff…and hit up the farm for some winter veggies and buffalo meat. 🙂
It looks like a really nice day out. Any big plans for the day?
Not a nice day here but way warmer than yesterday.
Sounds like you’ve got a busy day ahead. The only thing we’re doing is going out to dinner tonight with my sister and her husband to a new restaurant opened by a friend of hers.
Since it’s a CB-free weekend, we have plans to go see Juno at the old-style movie theater later. And then I guess well be watching primary returns from SC when we get home.
You know one of the nicest things about having moved from dial-up to satellite is that I’m not longer afraid to click on links for fear that they’ll take me to a page that takes forever to load. 🙂
And that looks like a gorgeous theater.
I think I’m going to go out into the gray for a nice not-freezing-today walk.
That’s quite an intriguing menu. Now I’m hungry for a Belgian Waffle! Please let us know how it was! Maybe I’ll do something out of the ordinary and leave the county for dinner out.
My little piece of the mountains is still beautiful, though changed somewhat by last year’s flooding. Thankfully, the roads in that area have been well repaired, despite scant local resources. Those folks are really on the ball.
Alas, I haven’t started building my little hut yet. I was offered 2 old barns’ worth of fabulous lumber — including some very old redwood — early last spring; spent spring/summer/fall culling, prepping & fitting for a pre-fab building. Now to haul matrials & build.
It seems I’ll be continuing the project basically by myself; hope I hold out, considering that I’m just a skinny old hag. We’ll see.
I do miss the mountains & my kitties enormously. Lost Mama Kitty when we were made homeless by the flooding; this past summer Baby Kitty also took a powder, damn him. However, Mama Kitty seems to have done well enough to give birth to another kitty, who came around to show his hide sometime later.
Damn them all! They break my heart every time.
That’s my year in a nutshell. Thanks for asking!
I did take some photos of the beautiful property where I was staying; will see if I can’t upload for your viewing pleasure.
I’m just about to head out the door but just wanted to do my own drive-by to say 1) that I would love to see the pics if you have a chance to upload them and 2) I’m sorry to hear you haven’t been able to get started on building but glad to hear that you’ve got an offer of some good material.
Just in case that cat story is confusing: I circled back around to the place where I lost Mama Kitty initially, ergo Baby Kitty II could come by & see us. Then he vanished too. sigh
Just heard on the teevee that the sky is falling, according to the NSA.
I seem to remember 40’s and rain tomorrow. BTW, its the 30th anniversary of the Blizzard Of 78, my 2nd winter after returning to Indiana from south Florida. There was no panic – resourceful Hoosiers knew exactly what to do.
Nine months after the Blizzard of ’78, the maternity unit at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis overflowed with pregnant women.
I procrastinated until past waffle serving time and had to make do with pancakes instead, but that was ok. Today it’ll be homemade french toast with Mom. I’m cooking.
I think you will like it. Not only is food very good but the restaurant itself is very pleasant and they have lots of things for sale so if you want to get up and stretch your legs, there’s plenty to look it.
There are so many good restaurants in Bloomington, you definitely need to get there more. I highly recommend the Thai restaurant opposite the west side of the public library. Also, the Indian restaurant just up from the Thai restaurant.
Yeah but aren’t college students supposed to exist on Ramen noodles? I know when I was in college it was Kraft mac and cheese. I’ll never eat that again.
Well for one thing 30,000 students require lots and lots of adults from a huge variety of backgrounds to live there too. Plus, that’s why most of the restaurants aren’t expensive.
Giddy says I need to feed her spirit and go for a walk.
Have a great time! I once lived in Garden City, back in the Neolithic Period. I was just looking at Hempstead on Google Streets the other day, trying to see if my grandfather’s house was still there.
I must say, I’m so pleased to be able to take a morning seat at the cafe’ with a lovely cup of milky espresso, just like back in the day. Balmy tropical breezes are a plus on this cloudy Sunday.
I’m also pleased that I’ve finished my voter ed project. Spent the day yesterday preparing voting info on Tuesday’s ballot for retirement home residents — some of them very elderly, still interested & engaged in the process.
I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a rough time, FM. Thankfully, things do change.
Other folks I know with asthma seem to be experiencing strong symptoms lately.
I’m giving myself a Valentine & heading back up north on the 14th. I’ll be in the city for a day or so & then wander back to the woods to work.
Balmy breezes sound luscious right about now, as does milky espresso.
I’ve had to turn the heat way down in the house because whenever it comes on there is a godawful smell in the rooms on one side of the house – namely my bedroom! I’ve spent days trying to track down the source and now I guess it’s time to call the HVAC people. Ick.
O dear — it does sound like somebody died & is gently decomposing. Much bacteria — not the best thing for your lungs. Can you stay out of there ’til you get rid of the problem?
I’ve got a buddy in central CO right now who doesn’t want to sleep with her man, either — so she’s nesting outdoors in the van. Layers are the key, she says.
A strange little thought: if you let a kitty or pup into your room, they might be able to pinpoint for you where the trouble spot is. They got good noses.
I grew up in the southern Indiana woods. I wound up managing an orange grove near Mt. Dora after a hitch in the navy and later worked for Piper in Vero Beach, but got the back-to-the-land bug in the 70’s and came home to roost and raise kids. I liked FL a lot, but it was never truly “home”.
The photo above was posted by Friday Photography Blog host, LEP.
I have several photos yet to post from the exhibition “100 Years of Paris in Color” which remains at the Hotel de Ville until March 31. If you can get there it’s worth it.
This one was taken around 1920. It’s some art academy students, maybe doing the “rite of spring.” This group didn’t need hallucinogens, that’s for sure.
Over here! A clean table or two!
So ask, are you all ready for your trip?
Good morning!
Well, curly is packed – I haven’t started.
But, hey, what’s there to pack? Swim trunks, t-shirts, and sandals are all you need, right?
Do you leave tomorrow or Sunday?
Exactly! My philosophy as well.
Red-eye 6 am departure Sunday, get up at 3.30 – but, then, we’ll actually arrive early afternoon.
Perfect timing for a nap on the beach. 🙂
Ah, we are kindred spirits. I never pack till the last minute.
Usually works out!
Plus the longer you procrastinate, the less time you have to spend trying to decide what to take.
That is very true.
Plus, if you pack too far ahead, you wind up taking way more stuff than you actually need.

cute … so you gonna tell us how you did that?
And repeating my question from the old cafe: used your new yarn yet?
I just turned my monitor upside down before I posted. 😉
And repeating my answer from the old cafe:
I haven’t given in to the temptation yet…I’m still finishing some fancy-schmancy socks up, and I think I need a smaller set of circular needles to start it, so I’m just eyeing the swatch I knit up longingly. 🙂

Will we at least get to see this wondrous yarn in your next diary?
Yeah, I showed it to CBtE for his myspace/facebook amusement, and got to be the cool mom this morning. 🙂
I think a diary is definitely in order. I have to get outside and take the pictures for it today. Y’all ready for some yarn pr0n? 🙂
Plus, we all need to see how Kamakhaya is doing with her scarf and knitting lessons.
I never like knitting but I’ve always like looked at knitted stuff. Have you ever gone to any of the knitting artwork sites?
you should get a kick out of this one too.
No offense to frogs with that, hopefully.
well, umm, it’s, uh, perfect for BT. 😉
And somehow this seems the perfect note on which to “leave” for work.
See ya.
My inner science geek is showing, isn’t it? I hate when that happens.

Wow, that’s a beautiful photo Andi. Love that blue sky w/ the white limbs. 🙂
Good morning all. I see that we’re speaking Greek today, or something.
good morning, boran. Got any big plans this weekend? Snowboarding, maybe?
Aren’t you going to join us in speaking Greek-ish?
No snowboarding, we have a wedding to attend. January is such a good time for it. 😉
Greek? Sorry I don’t speak the language. (I do love feta though!)
Even happier here because it’s 25 degrees warmer than yesterday morning.
Good morning, Andi!
We’re still frozen here, 25 at the moment.
It’s only 27 here but after 2 degrees with 20 mph winds, it just feels warm.
Good morning Andi and Ask.
It’s cold down here and I’m waiting on coffee.
Well tell that coffee to get its butt in gear, dude.
I did and finally got the first cup. It better start working because I’m still very sleepy this morning.
Hey, that’s how you can tell Saturday from all the other days — it’s the one where you’re sleepy. 😉
Nope I’m sleepy everyday, but today more so. I kept waking up all night. First cup down, but I can’t tell a difference. Maybe a second cup will help. 🙂
Well it’s never too early for a nap, right?
A nap is good at anytime. 🙂
I kept waking up all night long too, FM. Could it be the two cappuccinos I had after dinner? Hmmm….
Morning SN.
Two cappuccinos after dinner? Why didn’t you just have a caffeine IV? Probably the same. 🙂
I was at Starbucks and they had this great little Celtic band there and the free coffee drinks were flowing courtesy of my d-i-l and I just couldn’t stop myself.
How is FMom today? Winter is tough on my asthma.
Well who could pass up free coffee drinks? Of course free drinks in a bar is better. 🙂
She’s feeling pretty worn out this morning. Her breathing is much better though. Thanks for asking.
Sounds like fun. We watched Bill Moyers and counted how many times Bush got called a liar.
I’m sorry your asthma is so bad in the winter. My breathing is getting back to normal finally now that my cold is gone.
Morning CG.
Glad to hear that cold is finally gone. I watched part of that too last night.
I’m sorry FMom hasn’t been feeling well.
What are you all up to today?
Thanks, nothing going on today. Supposed to have some relatives coming in, but that remains to be seen.
you could have a little drinking game – every time someone calls him a liar you have to swig some, I guess, green tea with honey?
My friend has a video of the Grinch and I thought how cute that was that a grown man had a Grinch video – until he told me that in college they played a drinking game to it – whenever they heard the word “who”….
Green tea? Have you been reading this month’s Vanity Fair? 🙂
That’s pretty funny about the grinch…I’m guessing it would be a tough challenge to make it all the way through the movie.
all the whos down in whoville agree…
Good morning Cabin Girl! We’ve been TV free since fall 2006 and Moyers is one of the few we miss. I’ve been thinking about putting up a UHF antenna so we could get PBS. (We miss the mysteries too.)
Bill Moyers, Keith Olbermann, and the HBO series The Wire are about the only things I watch on teevee with any regularity. (Occassionally Family Guy episodes slip in there too – that show is just so wrong, though.)
Other than those, I could live without teevee too.
I blame Arthur, he goaded me into it. I miss Stewart & Colbert too, but not the $70 per month satellite bill.
Good morning Andi, ask, Family Man & Second Nature! <whew>
I’m glad to be home from the frigid 0 F wind tunnels of downtown Indy.
Hi ID. I’d be glad to be out of that too.
It always amazes me how cold and windy cities can be – I always think tall buildings should block the wind, not create it. (I guess there’s a reason I didn’t like my physics class…)
I suppose it has to go somewhere and squooshing it between the buildings seems to make it all the more angry. I wasn’t a big physics fan either.
I actually walked out of my first physics exam in tears in college. I just knew I was going to fail and not get into the college of pharmacy. Then I learned about the magic of grading on a curve: my 67% was a B+.
English & history were my favorites and what am I doing now?, spreadsheets, statistical analysis and a bit of IT for Mrs. Dem’s network. Go figure.
Morning ID.
So Indy is colder than where you are?
No, it seems to be how the wind gets directed between the taller buildings downtown. It just about knocks me off my feet when its around zero up there. Reminds me of Chicago in the spring;-)
Back in the days when NYC got truly cold & the wind just whipped between those buildings, a friend from Wisconsin told me that the best thing to do in a frigid wind was to relax the muscles as much as possible. It helps one feel warmer.
Gotta go. FMom is up and stirring around.
See ya’ll later.
go cruise the nets for a bit and everybody wakes up and gets really chatty.
Morning SN, CG, and ID.
Hi Andi, I envy you the wood stove on days like this. However, I don’t envy the dust, bugs, ash, soot, cleaning, etc.
Don’t know. We’ve got an excellent Vermont Castings Vigilant that’s going to last way longer than we will so he’s never mentioned the corncob stove.
I had to abandon my Vermont Castings wood stove to prior landlord (debt paid) & am truly heartbroken.
There’s absolutely nothing like a good wood stove & VC stoves are truly works of art.
Lovely image up above, Andi. Hope everyone’s doing well this morning.
You’re going to head back NY soon and we aren’t going to have ever gotten to “talk.” 🙁
But it’s been grand having you around and getting to read all your excellent comments, political and personal.
I’m still here, Andi — though shortly due for a nap.
Just can’t take these tropical midday hours.
And how are you? Did you have a fine walk this morning?
I do appreciate your compliments, though I must say I feel somewhat less on the ball these days than in the past. I’m starting in on ginkgo biloba in efforts to salvage brain function.
Wood smoke wreaks havoc with my asthma. Oh, good morning, Andi. 🙂
Good morning, luscious one. How are you?
Well, how could I possibly be anything other than splendid after being called luscious so early in the morning? 🙂 It’s great to see you back here!
Great to see you as well, SN. It’s lovely to be back in the pond, too — even if only temporarily. I’m headed back to work in the woods pretty soon.
How’s your new year so far?
Ooh goodie – back to the woods! My new year has been, erm, eventful! Are you down in FL?
Yes, I am — for the usual family visits; I also needed a break from manual labor.
May I ask what you mean by ‘eventful’? I hope that doesn’t mean ‘painful’ or ‘horrifying’ ..
Oh, eventful as in crappy marriage stuff. You know, the usual. 😉
I’m sorry to hear that, SN.
Crappy marriage stuff actually seems to be in the air this season, among women I’m fond of.
See ya.
Your restaurant for tonight looks equally wonderful!
The best thing about the movie theater is that the admission and snack bar are reasonably priced, and the money goes to continuing to restore it.
And I’m sure I’ve said this before, but that theater s the one made famous in the 1957 version of The Blob.
That’s quite an intriguing menu. Now I’m hungry for a Belgian Waffle! Please let us know how it was! Maybe I’ll do something out of the ordinary and leave the county for dinner out.
It does sound good, doesn’t it. I’ll report on it tomorrow.
Now I’m really out of here. Have a good one.
Me too, off in search of a couple of waffles for brunch. Have a good day everyone!
I don’t know why but I always find corn snow amusing. Maybe because it looks like little spit balls.
Wow. That’s such a great photo, Andi. I love it! I feel cool.
Plus, it illustrates the truth about the seasons, as I see it: they embrace each other.
Why, thanks.
I sure do miss your photos of winter in the mountains and cats in the cabin — though probably not nearly as much as you do.
And how is your piece of the mountains?
My little piece of the mountains is still beautiful, though changed somewhat by last year’s flooding. Thankfully, the roads in that area have been well repaired, despite scant local resources. Those folks are really on the ball.
Alas, I haven’t started building my little hut yet. I was offered 2 old barns’ worth of fabulous lumber — including some very old redwood — early last spring; spent spring/summer/fall culling, prepping & fitting for a pre-fab building. Now to haul matrials & build.

Gotta scoot. See ya.
Thanks for good wishes, Andi. Always appreciated.
Have fun!
Just in case that cat story is confusing: I circled back around to the place where I lost Mama Kitty initially, ergo Baby Kitty II could come by & see us. Then he vanished too.
sigh
Just heard on the teevee that the sky is falling, according to the NSA.
I’m am soooo full and everything was soooo good.
BTW, the place was jammed so if you’re going on a weekend go early.
Thanks for the review! We’ll make plans to get over there soon. Everyone must be snoozing late this morning. Obama victory party hangovers, maybe?
Good morning ID and Andi.
Good morning Family Man! Is it still chilly down your way? I hear we’re about to have a mid-winter heat wave.
It’s warming up here. We’re at 40 now and will be close to 60 this afternoon. Hope ya’ll get a little break too.
I seem to remember 40’s and rain tomorrow. BTW, its the 30th anniversary of the Blizzard Of 78, my 2nd winter after returning to Indiana from south Florida. There was no panic – resourceful Hoosiers knew exactly what to do.
I guess that’s why they call it cabin fever. 🙂
Heh – at least the medication is pleasant!
I slept in a little, and I’ve been surfing the internets while I finish waking up this morning.
Did you get your waffles yesterday?
Morning CG.
Coffee – I need coffee!
I procrastinated until past waffle serving time and had to make do with pancakes instead, but that was ok. Today it’ll be homemade french toast with Mom. I’m cooking.
Homemade French toast? Care package please. 🙂
Real syrup too. None of this synthetic garbage!
The only way to do it!
I think you will like it. Not only is food very good but the restaurant itself is very pleasant and they have lots of things for sale so if you want to get up and stretch your legs, there’s plenty to look it.
I’m looking forward to it and Mrs. Dem will be very pleased to have an out-of-town dinner date;-)
There are so many good restaurants in Bloomington, you definitely need to get there more. I highly recommend the Thai restaurant opposite the west side of the public library. Also, the Indian restaurant just up from the Thai restaurant.
Who would have ever guessed that Bloomington was an epicurean destination. 😉
It’s not very surprising if you know that it’s the home of Indiana University which has over 30,000 students.
Later.
Good point. Enjoy your walk.
Good morning all. We’re off to Long Island for the wedding shortly, land of green lawns and tract houses.
Morning Boran.
A wedding huh. Well at least there should be a lot of food.
And dancin’.
Have a great time! I once lived in Garden City, back in the Neolithic Period. I was just looking at Hempstead on Google Streets the other day, trying to see if my grandfather’s house was still there.
I’m actually from that area, Woodmere to be exact.
Boran dancin’. That needs to be put on youtube.
.. with still photos for the net impaired (like yours truly)!
Howdy there, FM.
Howdy back there WW.
I keep forgetting about the net impaired. So thoughtless of me. 😉
Good morning! Hope everyone’s doing well today.
Good morning WW.
It’s so nice to see you. Dare say if you were on your mountain, it wouldn’t be balmy at the moment.
Actually, I hear it’s not so bad there lately.
Then again, anything above -10 is fine for me.
How’s by you lately? How is your mom?
Everything here is going so-so. Between things going on with me and FMom’s asthma, it has been a rough month so far.
How much longer before you get back to your mountain?
I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a rough time, FM. Thankfully, things do change.
Other folks I know with asthma seem to be experiencing strong symptoms lately.
I’m giving myself a Valentine & heading back up north on the 14th. I’ll be in the city for a day or so & then wander back to the woods to work.
It’s wonderful seeing you, as well.
Ick.
Good morning, scrumptious.
Bad smell sounds like bad news. Does it seem like a chemical smell? Or is it more organic?
I can’t really tell which. It’s a combo smell – like dead mouse and rotten sauerkraut.
O dear — it does sound like somebody died & is gently decomposing. Much bacteria — not the best thing for your lungs. Can you stay out of there ’til you get rid of the problem?
If the choice is sleeping in my own room with the smell, or sharing a room with the mister again – I’ll take the bad smell! 😉
O dear! Not a good choice, is it.
I’ve got a buddy in central CO right now who doesn’t want to sleep with her man, either — so she’s nesting outdoors in the van. Layers are the key, she says.
I love having my own room for the first time in my life! it’s like a sanctuary – without the death stink, that is.
O yeah — ‘a room of one’s own’ is really important, especially, I think, for women.
This is why I’m working so hard on building my own little place. It’s basically going to be just a room, but so what?
A strange little thought: if you let a kitty or pup into your room, they might be able to pinpoint for you where the trouble spot is. They got good noses.
I tried that with my basset hound and since letting her into my room is a big treat for her, all she did was flop down on my bed for a belly rub!
Figures. Dogs feel totally comfortable with stinky stuff.
Hey, as long as it’s all yours it doesn’t really matter how small it is, right?
You bet!
My diagnosis – dead mouse in heat duct. Good luck with that. Know anyone with a shop vac and a very long hose?
That’s what I was thinking, too.
Morning SN.
By chance Hopey has gotten stuck in a vent has she?
Good morning WW! This time of year, I miss my old Indian River County, FL home (and the 10 orange, grapefruit and tangerine trees in the back yard).
Good morning to you, Indianadem! Fruit trees in the back yard are the best. Everyone should have some.
I hope you don’t mind my asking: what caused you to make the leap northward?
I grew up in the southern Indiana woods. I wound up managing an orange grove near Mt. Dora after a hitch in the navy and later worked for Piper in Vero Beach, but got the back-to-the-land bug in the 70’s and came home to roost and raise kids. I liked FL a lot, but it was never truly “home”.
I know that feeling very well. If we can truly find ‘home’, we’re extremely lucky, quite blessed.
I’m guessing your homesteading efforts back in the day were successful? So many folks headed out to the land & found themselves unprepared.
We had lots of good & rough times too. We now live in town, but I still get to do some grubbing around in the dirt every spring to stay “grounded”.
Excellent. That’s good news.
I just must pimp a little for the Friday Photo Blog over at European Tribune. The photos are fascinating and the photographers congenial.
This week – old historical photos:
The photo above was posted by Friday Photography Blog host, LEP.
I just went over and looked. You’re right, those photos are fascinating.
Gotta go. FMom is up and George is ready to go outside.
See ya’ll later.
We need a new cafe, pronto!
see you on the flip?
