Record-High Ratio of Americans in Prison
By N.C. Aizenman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, February 28, 2008; 11:57 AMMore than one in 100 adults Americans is in jail or prison, an all-time high that is costing state governments nearly $50 billion a year, in addition to more than $5 billion spent by the federal government, according to a report released today.
With more than 2.3 million people behind bars at the start of 2008, the United States leads the world in both the number and the percentage of residents it incarcerates, leaving even far more populous China a distant second, noted the report by the nonpartisan Pew Center on the States.
The ballooning prison population is largely the result of tougher state and federal sentencing imposed since the mid-1980s. Minorities have been hit particularly hard: One in nine black men age 20 to 34 is behind bars. For black women age 35 to 39, the figure is one in 100, compared with one in 355 white women in the same age group.
And we wonder why there is a depression in the making here.
Shit.

Prison America.
Our way or the penitentiary way.

And y’all wonder why I get pissed off when Dems trash Dems.
Shit, motherfuckers!!!
Get on the boat or go down with the fucking ship.

Spare me the flames.
We will have more than enough of them if we do not get our act together RIGHT NOW!!!
Bet on it.

Although they say this:
What they didn’t mention was that since the determined and ever growing agenda to PRIVATIZE all of the prisons in the US. No doubt, everywhere else as well. In order for these “Private” prisons to survive and grow and make $Billions$, they must keep the prisons full and bulging.
When they start hauling yuppie white americans off to prison for the same long years behind bars for powder cocaine use/sale as they do for crack cocaine, then perhaps the private prisons will be equal to the oil companies in revenues. But then, we only want black and brown people in prison, not upscale white folks.
Our drug sentencing laws are ridiculous and very unfair.
Thanks AG.
.
The US has the highest prison population rate in the world, some 714 per 100,000 of the national population, followed by Belarus, Bermuda and Russia (all 532). However, almost three fifths of countries (58%) have rates below 150 per 100,000.
