Look at the people that support torture. I gotta wonder what Dennis Kucinich and Maxine Waters were thinking. They’re concern trolls…or something.
There’s a special election in Indianapolis (IN-07) today to keep an eye on.
CNN returns for Mississippi are here.
Update [2008-3-11 20:34:45 by BooMan]: MSNBC called it for Obama after a polite fifteen minutes. Still no returns in. Exit Polls are here.
How can Mississippi be “too early to call”? Do they need to wait to see if Obama’s lead goes down??
maybe a time zone diff.
also the media likes drama and eyeballs. If they call it too early, ratings decline….gotta keep these primaries going. good for revenues…so they distort that it’ll be a brokered convention – it’s a tied race.
Btw CNN: Obama is leading Hillary
MSNBC: Obama battles Clinton for Mississippi
What’s the joke? Mississippi is in two time zones: 1938 and 1952.
Btw – check out how CNN is sneaking info that Obama won Texas into its Mississippi victory piece:
Nice!
Mississippi called for Obama by MSNBC.
Not a surprise that Republicans favor Clinton!
I get home late and I miss the call. oh well.
On to PA.
They must really, really want her in the general.
I would, if I were them. Either way, Republicans win. If she’s in the race and they defeat her, woohoo. If she’s in the race and they don’t defeat her, she kills her party for them anyway. Woohoo either way.
So Mississippi was an open primary?
Yup. Looks like it got the Rush treatment from the Republican stats.
Black vote: Obama 91% Clinton 9%.
If Clinton got 91% of the white vote Obama supporters would say it was “racism”.
It’s one thing to want to vote for one of your own.
That’s a different thing than not voting for someone who is not one of your own solely because of their race.
To Clarify, a Red Sox fan would not be accused of racism if they attended a Red Sox game facing an all-white team. But a Red Sox fan WOULD be accused of racism if they refused to attend a Red Sox game facing an all-black team. Slight but important difference.
Frank Malzone.
I hadn’t quite thought of it this way, but this is a profound statement.
Thanks!
I can look at OH and see that 80% of the white voters who said that race was a factor voted for Clinton and can see that that’s racism. I can not look at Clinton getting 70% of the white vote any where and say ‘racism’ because I don’t know the motivation.
By your logic, Clinton winning the majority of women means they’re sexist and her garnering old people means that they’re ageist.
Like I said: bullshit.
Exactly. But gender is a big part of why people vote for Clinton, and race is a big part of why people vote for Obama. But it’s because they identify with those characteristics, not because they hate the opposing forces. I don’t think most women vote for Hillary because they hate men! š
Are you sure about that last part? š
I guess I underestimate the depth of women’s anger towards men, eh?
From what I saw at our caucuses–disappointment, antipathy, bad experiences with men–all played a larger role than one would like.
It’s virtual unanimity. If Clinton got 91 out of every hundred female votes I’d say it was sexism. But that hasn’t happened.
so, not voting for a campaign that repeatedly insults your racial sensitivities is racist?
An amazing Clintonian inversion of reality.
is beyond ridiculous. Do you believe the “3 am” ad was “racist”, as some were suggesting today?
Her campaign is racial. At this point even Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow are saying it.
Before that, Howard Fineman was on and he’s convinced that the Clinton campaign sent Ferraro out to say what she did.
Yep I know PA…went to school there.
HRC should win handily there. They’ll buy into Ferraro. And Bill Clinton has landed telling seniors Hillary needs a big win in PA just like TX and OH.
A horror movie that should have ended loong ago. They’re both writing their exits.
Maybe if Spitzer resigns they may throw their sights on the gov’s job.
Bill says that Hillary needs a BIG victory in Pennsylvania. That means she needs to win big in the middle part of the state. Ferraro’s comments are aimed right there at all the lower income/ less educated white people who believe that white people are discriminated when they speak the ‘truth’ about how blacks get better treatment etc. All this play that her remarks are getting tonight is a gold mine for Hillary with respect to that audience.
But in the end – I think it will further turn off the superdelegates from the west and upper midwest.
Yep, they keep rolling out that old “PA is Pittsburgh in the west, Philadelphia in the east and (white) Alabama in the middle.” Ferraro’s comments are directed at Alabama.
I also think they put Ferraro out there in the hope that somebody actually in the Obama campaign would say out loud and on television what everyone else in the world has been saying – that Geraldine was a token women on a Democratic ticket. Then she and Hillary and their supporters can yell SEXISM!!!!
As far as I can tell, the Obama camp has been pretty disciplined and not pointed out the irony of Geraldine Ferraro saying all of this.
oh, and doing this during the Mississippi Primary is rich.
Geraldine Ferraro was picked to be the VP for Walter Mondale.
Walter Mondale was picked by Hubert Humphrey to mediate a dispute over the seating of a delegation at the 1964 Democratic convention.
The delegation was the racist Mississippi delegation which was being challenged by the Black Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. Let’s just say, the black delegation wasn’t seated at the convention.
Don’t tell me this whole thing wasn’t planned.
Of course, it was planned.
I’m personally convinced they deliberately turned her loose to do exactly what she’s done–she’s pretty much wall-to-wall leading right into a racially sensitive southern primary crucial to Obama for “regaining” perceptual momentum. And it’s not like Ferraro has to worry about flushing her “revered party elder” status down the crapper. Nobody’s seen her for the last 20 years. She’s got nothing to lose except her self-respect.
well, what do you know. Ain’t this something:
Kos dug up some old Geraldine Ferraro stuff in Wapo. Her bona fides going back to 1988.
She’s a certified racist with a long history of this shit
dammmmmmmmmmmmmmn.
Fuck a duck…there’s no second guessing this one. That was Ferraro’s role. And once again, the Clinton’s don’t understand the power of the internet.
Someone in the MSM needs to interview Ferraro and trot out that quote about Jackson, just to get it out there. The average American might be slow, but a lot of us can pick out patterns when they’re pointed out to us.
And they should get a few interns to review everything in LexisNexis said by her during the Mondale Ferraro campaign as well. They will probably find many instances.
There ya go. Establish the pattern. And while they’re at it maybe they should look up a few more quotes from other Hillary surrogates, and maybe even from Herself.
I can’t help noting that a lot of CIA folks are hoping Hillary wins. š
like who (other than Larry)?
Pat Lang.
But here I am, black as could be…if lived in MS and were sitting on the fence, and heard Ferraro’s remarks this morning. You can bet my black ass would be voting for Obama. Not because he’s black, but because it’s clear the Clinton’s use race-baiting tactics.
Last night, I made phone calls and sent emails to my kin down in Mississippi, urging them to vote for Obama. After extolling the virtures of Obama, some of them were still going to vote for Clinton. All I had to do was mention all the race-baiting from the Clinton’s. One of my cousins jokingly said, “Why you bringin’ up old shit?” I pointed him to Ferraro’s remarks from yesterday and that was all it took.
So you can call it racism if you’d like, but why should we have to vote for racists?
Her stance on Iraq caused me to vow never to vote for her again. But calling her a racist is just plain stupid.
This is the same bullshit the Clinton’s pulled back in ’92. Only difference, instead of slow-assed BBS, we got high-speed internet and a lot more people are online.
Hey Ed J
Hillary has played the race card, gender card ,the victim card-poor cheated wife card, and exaggerated her experience b/c she watched Bill do the presidency.
I’ll give her some credit. She stood by her man.
On second thought, I take that back. Looks like she made a deal with Bill after the Monica thingy… something akin to this:
I’ll stand by you but you’ll atone to me, show me how sorry you are when I run for the presidency.
Guess what?
Bill has been marvelous: See dear how sorry I’ve been, I’ve been stumping the country and hurled a lot of racial slurs and mud, all for you, b/c I’m sooooo sorry.
The problem with the questions are that they are vague. If you ask did you vote for Clinton? Did you vote for her because she was white and Obama was black? You could follow up with do you think that blacks are unqualified for being President. Those kinds of questions pretty much answer what you wonder. Unfortunately, it’s considered rude to ask those kinds of questions.
I seem to remember a time several years ago when the black polls were the first to show dissatisfaction w/Bush as in a 10% approval. Perhaps sexism, racism or whateverisms overlooks old fashioned wisdom on the part of black voters. just sayin
/Hijack
Everyone set your TIVO, KO said there will be a special commentary on the Clinton campaign tomorrow night.
/Hijack off
Can’t wait for that. I hope it’ll be spittle-flecked!
By tomorrow, do you mean Wednesday? Time? We watch so little TV, we need all the help we can get to follow these things.
What’s the delegate spread look like, Booman?
he’s looking pretty good in the 3rd and 4th. The 1st is iffy. He might pull the 4th and the 1st.
Lemme see.
Right now he is not on pace to break 59.9%, but that could definitely change.
At-large: 6-5 Obama
So, right now, either 20-13 or 19-14.
If he goes over 59.9% he might scratch another delegate out.
Julia Carson’s grandson Andre takes the lead with just over half the precincts in:
Carson’s opponent, Republican Jon Elrod has recently had some interesting spelling difficulties with his campaign advertising pieces.
Al Giordano over at The Field is saying things are looking So good for Obama here in MS that he (Giordano) might have to eat his 17-16 pledged delegate split prediction. The numbers look so strong that “that would likely kick the 1st and 3rd CDs into the Obama column… and maybe even the 4th”. I’m in the 4th, so that’s good. Hillary was predicted to take it. All based on exit polling, but a very good sign.
what is up with the northeast corner of your state?
In Tishomingo Co.
Clinton 1,216 83%
Obama 187 13%
It’s about 95% white, probably 5% black (or less), BooMan. No lie. That’s disappointing, but anticipated.
Obama’s getting scary close to 60% (close to 58%) here in MS with about 57% reporting. I think he MIGHT just get that extra delegate yet.
Am I missing anything on MSNBC?
The Obama interview at the top of the hour was good, but the rest has been Chris Mathews babbling on. Just okay really.

Philadelphia, Mississippi. Three freedom riders were killed there back in 1964.
Reagan kicked off his Presidential campaign near there with comments about “state’s rights.” In case anyone is unfamiliar with the expression, it was the rallying cry behind the segregation movement. Lee Atwater described the strategy after he developed a terminal disease and experienced a religious conversion.
See what Atwater said, it’s very interesting and revealing. I’d post it but it uses the ‘n’ word.

On August 4, 1980, Ronald Reagan began his presidential campaign with a speech near Philadelphia, Mississippi at the annual Neshoba County Fair. During the speech, Reagan told the crowd, “Programs like education and others should be turned back to the states and local communities with the tax sources to fund them. I believe in states’ rights. I believe in people doing as much as they can at the community level and the private level.”[8] He went on to promise to “restore to states and local governments the power that properly belongs to them.” –from Wikipedia
Neshoba County results, a squeaker for Obama on Dem side.
Barack Obama 1412 (51%)
Hillary Clinton 1245 (45%)
__________
John McCain 1896 (84%)
Mike Huckabee 250 (11%)
Ron Paul 33 (1%)
100% of precincts reporting
Nice margin too.
How awesome would it be if Barack won a county named for the president of the Confederacy?
