Perhaps lost in the focus on Barack Obama’s victory tonight in Mississippi and all the hoopla over Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s whoring, the people of Indianapolis elected only the second Muslim representative in the history of the United States. I hope that André Carson gets a committee position on the Foreign Affairs Committee. Currently, twenty-six percent of the Democrats on that committee are Jewish-Americans and zero percent are Muslim. I think we would be better served by a more balanced representation on that committee.

Yes, and if Congress picks up a Muslim a year (its current pace) then by the time the Foreign Affairs Committee is literally balanced… well, I’ll be dead!
Congrats, Congressman-elect Carson!
That is truly amazing. And from Indiana of all places. I wonder if they knew they were electing a muslim. I hadn’t heard of him until tonight. Good news…
Is Muslim central. That’s where we have our headquarters. Huge conferences and conventions every year there. Some of the best speeches I had ever written were given in Indiana (followed closely by Texas).
Thanks for the link, fabooj.
Well, well… who’d a thunk it? I hope this bodes ill for that twerp guv of ours.
A superdelegate? For Obama? I’ll take everyone I can get. TIme to get these spatting kids together.
Oh, please, not another “the Jews have too much power” comment. I really do wish the Jews ran the show instead of the current crop of Bible-thumping Jesus freaks – they would probably do a better job.
you’re a genius.
From one angle, there does need to be more representation on the committee to counterbalance the Israel Lobby aligned views of the majority of the members on the committee. Not only are the majority of Republican members beholden to Christian Zionists, but several of the Democrats on the committee have been lead sponsors of AIPAC drafted or endorsed legislation. In addition, the choice of chair for this committee fulfills Henry Waxman’s promises to members of the Israel Lobby back in November 2006:
From another angle, considering the many foreign policy challenges in which our country has become involved, where the War Against Terror has often looked like the War Against Muslims, the Foreign Policy committee could benefit from the perspective of at least one Muslim member of congress. (In a similar fashion to the way that not only feminists became aware after the Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill hearings that the Senate could benefit from the perspective of more women Senators).
