I was going to write an essay yesterday, but figured that, since it was April Fool’s Day, it probably would not be taken seriously.
However, the greatest April Fool’s joke of all was perpetrated in Congress yesterday as they interviewed executives from the oil industry… my car radio set on C-Span was my source of humor, and I’m still thinking about it today.
Here was a group of men whose annual salaries were in the millions – each! – and whose industry had 128 Billion Dollars in PROFITS this year, who were expressing their concern for middle America and the price it was paying at the gas pump. Concern yes, but not any shame at the profits or salaries… after all, they were equivalent to companies in similar situations (I don’t really know who those other non-oil companies can be… the Automobile Industry? Fast Food? Leather and Luggage?
And these guys still wanted their tax breaks! I spent a quick swerve on the road avoiding traffic that my laughing eyes missed when I heard that one.
What’s even more of an April Fool’s joke is that they will probably get their tax break. And we’ll probably hit over 4.00 for gas by summer!
