Barack Obama has influence in strange places:
MILAN, Italy – The latest “first” for Barack Obama comes off the Milan runway.
Calling the U.S. presidential hopeful “the man of the moment,” Donatella Versace dedicated her Spring-Summer 2009 collection presented Saturday evening to Obama, creating a style she said was designed for “a relaxed man who doesn’t need to flex muscles to show he has power.”
Chatting with reporters in the cool of the garden of her private palazzo in downtown Milan at an after-show dinner party, the designer also had some fashion tips for the campaign trail. “I would get rid of the tie and jazz up the shirt,” she said.
Is this a Jackie Kennedy effect?
He should be wearing a BMT t-shirt.
nah, he should be wearing a set of headphones, so he can better listen in on our phone calls.
Sorry, not so light-hearted today.
grumpy much?
yeah, having to write broadsides against people I like because they voted the wrong way (cough-Pat Murphy-cough cough) and watching a bunch of shallow, narcisstic power-mongers rob me of my rights has a way of doing that.
To quote someone I met at DL, “these people are not your friends”. If I want to look at celebrities, I go to egotastic (often NSFW).
That sounds like you might be quoting me.
Indeed I am!
And as I acknowledged then you were absolutely correct. these people are not my friends anymore than a hammer is my friend.
A hammer, like a politician, is a tool that is used to accomplish things. If the handle to my hammer broke, I would throw it away: the same is true of politicians.
This is somewhat interesting because I’ve overheard guys in stores, talking about, “The Obama Look”. One guy at the Gap came out the dressing room had his girlfriends checking him out, “Do I look like Obama?” Yes, but Asian. Black suit, white shirt, no tie. It’s so basic and yet, men are trying to dress like Obama? I’ve never seen anyone try to dress like a president or presidential candidate before.
Did you ever read the article in Fast Company called “The Brand Called Obama” – about how marketers should pay attention to why Obama is succeeding and work lessons into their own marketing materials? Great piece. Not online, unfortunately. The article said the world is more global, and people want to see us working more together across boundaries and borders rather than fighting each other.
I already saw the result of that article in the movie theater – a commercial for Coke showing Bill Frist and James Carville getting along. Pretty funny.
Turns out I’m a year late on the question. Didn’t notice that he got a fair amount of attention for his purposeful “sweater” look during the primaries.
Well, according to the WaPo in December 2007, apparently his anger didn’t translate into a different wardrobe.
He has improved since getting the nomination. And I haven’t seen him in Bermuda shorts…yet.
That’s exactly what he looks like with his button-downs. I have no idea why they don’t get him better shirts that, uh…fit? Especially when he’s hunched down which is most of the time. He always looks like a little boy playing dress-up. I really wouldn’t be surprised if his mom bought him his clothes.
Trying very very hard not to picture him in Bermuda shorts now..thanks a lot Sawgrass. Pair them with his ‘gay’ sweaters and we truly have a nightmare in the making.
Speaking of fashion, on NPR’s “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me,” they mentioned that Michelle Obama has gotten complaints for wearing sleeveless dresses. One of the commenters said that if she works out she deserves to show off her arms. Another one (Mo Rocca?) said, What, they want her to wear a “white tee” underneath? Of course, Rocca had also suggested that she was misquoted when she had wanted coffee as saying, “Why tea?”
