While this is totally commendable on Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ part, it does not strike me as the likely schedule for a vice-presidential pick.
Sebelius to Speak to National Gathering of Stonewall Democrats on Saturday
Who: Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius. Also, Mayor Denise Simmons (Cambridge, MA) – the only openly-lesbian African American Mayor in the Nation. National LGBT Democratic leaders, Party Officials.
What: Dinner of the Stonewall Democrats National Convention – a Gathering of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Democrats and Convention Delegates.
When: Saturday, August 23, 7:00 pm (Note: Gov. Sebelius is scheduled to speak promptly after 7:00 pm)
Where: Renaissance Hotel Denver – 3801 Quebec Street – Denver, CO 80207 – Ballroom A/B (This is on the Lower Level)
I’m sure that the Stonewall Democrats would be quite understanding if Sebelius had to cancel at the last moment, but I’m equally sure that if she is selected as Obama’s running mate she won’t be racing to Denver to keep this appointment. The fact that she even scheduled this event is courageous, and perhaps telling.
With NBC reporting that Gov. Kaine and Sen. Bayh have been informed that they are not the pick, it’s looking increasingly likely that Joey Biden is The One. Yet, I still have a sneaking suspicion that the Obama Camp is ready to spring a surprise. I get no sense that the surprise will be Clinton. But a Gore pick could really blow everyone’s mind.
Wonkette’s got a fun story up about Jack Reed. Haven’t heard his name in a while.
Well, Wonkette’s snark aside, a progressive could hardly hope for a better running mate than Jack Reed and I have been pumping here for months and expect full credit for persuading Barack if he is selected.
I would be okay with Reed, and as my husband said, “Plus, he’s a little guy – makes Obama look taller!”
I didn’t realize you has such sway with the Obama campaign, Booman 🙂
I didn’t either, until I read Wonkette’s piece.
Sorry, you’ll have to share credit with my Mom. She’s been pressing for Reed strongly too. 😉
i am glad, personally speaking, to hear of her before the stonewall group. but that totally knocks her out of the running.
i’ve hardly read a thing about obama and the gay community other than The Advocate complaining that it’s been years and years since he’s talked to the gay press.
man, i lived in DE for 6 years, and i sure hope it’s not Biden. talk about….well, he IS the Establishment. and i thought this was all about Change and Hope etc (but maybe that’s the ‘balance’ he’s looking for)
at this point i just want to know who it is so i don’t have to read any more speculation.
they’ve wore me down enough with the waiting, with the Bayh-pimping, and all the Clinton speculation, that I’ll actually be okay with Biden. I’ve always liked him personally. I don’t agree with him politically on several issues of modest importance, and I think his foreign policy advice is likely to be hit and miss. On some foreign policy issues I have profound differences with Biden. But he’s just one important adviser in the room, and he’s smart, experienced, and has the trust of a lot of important people.
Plus, Biden is a fighter. Literally. He was known in Scranton as a real ass-kicker. And he will never go down without drawing blood.
Biden as VP would seal the deal with my dad – who has ALWAYS voted republican. My dad’s a swift boat veteran, too, and does not think McCain should be elected. He’s been intrigued by Obama for almost a year now, and LOVES Biden. In fact, he’s told me on several occasions that he would vote for Biden if he ran for POTUS. I’ve never quite understood his reasoning, but I’ll be very happy if he votes for Obama.
I’d enjoy watching Biden dissect Pawlenty or Romney. I think it would be pretty hilarious.
One thing I’ve learned to not pin my hopes on is debates.
There are two important things that come out of debates.
Sadly, these are the two most important parts of a presidential level debate. And it is quite possible for a George W. Bush to win a debate on those terms. Obama, like Kerry and Gore before him, can actually lose a debate by winning it too decisively.
Biden’s proclivity for gaffes easily matches his classical debating skills. Therefore, I assume nothing about his ability to win a debate with Mitt Romney, or whoever.
Oh, I agree with you about debates. I’m just talking about sheer entertainment value – gaffes and all. I can’t get through most debates unless there’s something interesting going on in the subtext or performance.
I do think Biden could be a good attack dog, so to speak. He has said some truly dumb things, though, too – I agree.
Hey, I loved watching Kerry wipe the floor with Bush. I felt good and it was entertaining. Strangely, the feeling didn’t last.
He could astound, announce McCain is his choice and the Prez election has been cancelled.
What if each of them announced the other as his VP choice simultaneously?
Where’s Colin Powell these days? Obama did say that he wanted “somebody who has integrity, who’s in politics for the right reasons. I want somebody who is … independent, somebody who is able to say to me, `You know what, Mr. President? I think you’re wrong on this and here’s why.'” Now, Powell’s performance before the UN might DQ’s him on the integrity piece, but Powell would seem to fit Obama’s criteria and it’s a move that nobody would expect, that is of course if Alma lets him do it…
