Deep Thought (Campus Shooting ed.)

I guess all those high school shooters have graduated:

CONWAY, Ark. (AP) — A shooting in the heart of the University of Central Arkansas’ campus killed two students and wounded a third person, authorities said early Monday.

UCA police spokeswoman Lt. Rhonda Swindle said the first report of shots fired came at 9:19 p.m. An officer heard the shooting, which occurred near a male dormitory and behind the campus police station, and arrived on the scene in less than a minute, she said.

Witnesses described hearing as many as five gunshots ring out. One man fell to the sidewalk along the narrow alley between the dormitory and a fine arts center and died. Swindle said the two others rushed into the dorm, where paramedics later found them.

It’s bad enough when you have to worry about your kid in college getting raped, or not having a job when he or she graduates, or all the other myriad things a parent worries about when a child leaves home for the first time. However, mass murders by gunmen on campus shouldn’t have to be one of them. Yet we’ve seen a disturbing number of shooting incidents at colleges and universities over the last few years. These murders at UCA are the second campus shooting incident in less than a week.

When I was a teenager the only people who shot students were National Guardsmen during anti-war protests. Now it seems like any crazy can get a weapon and walk onto a campus and pretend they’re playing a live version of some video game. With one son in college I can tell you it’s scaring the piss out of me right now.

I don’t know what were the motivations of the killer or killers of these 2 young people at the University of Central Arkansas, but I have to wonder what is wrong with our society when no school is safe from this type of random, deadly gun violence.
