A genuine first for the Granite State:

The New Hampshire state senate is the first state-level legislature in the United States to have a female majority. Women will hold thirteen of the twenty-four (54%) state senate seats in the upcoming session.

New Hampshire State Senate President Sylvia Larsen told NPR that “New Hampshire has a long tradition of participation by women in the state legislature. In our last session we did have 10 women in the Senate of 24 and 140 women in the New Hampshire House…I think there is a greater acceptance of women as leaders since I’ve been in office.”

With Senator-elect Jeanne Shaheen and Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, two-thirds half of New Hampshire’s federal delegation is female, too.

On a related note, the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has the responsibility of vetting federal judges has only one woman serving on it. There are 18 dudes and Sen. Diane Feinstein of California. That is not right. With Biden stepping down to become vice-president and the Democrats’ extended majority, there should be at least two seats opening up on Judiciary. I think they should go to freshman senators Jeanne Shaheen and Kay Hagan. Do you agree?
