Working, I hope. Saturday and Sunday are the start to my work week.
Even though I don’t agree with everything the President does (Geithner and Summers, I’m looking at you), it is reassuring to see him operate as the head of state. After 8 years of Dubya and, further back, the Clintonian drama, it’s nice to have a thoughtful and eloquent President.
Dropping off a bunch of stuff at the thrift store. Selling some books at Half Price Books. Hitting the sales at Joann’s, and going to yet another thrift shop to browse (and probably buy). Coming home to bake a couple of cakes and make some marshmallow fondant. Then a nice nap.
Is Obama’s revised timetable for withdrawal really any different than Bush’s? He’s diluting the brand with this Iraq pullout jazz.
Looks like the plenary indulgence has worked with all the laurels and clapping his speech is receiving.
Yay! Now we can get to the ‘real war’ some new front in an endless war in some other country, as if it mattered which one.
The social atmosphere is that of a besieged city, where the possession of a lump of horseflesh makes the difference between wealth and poverty. And at the same time the consciousness of being at war, and therefore in danger, makes the handing-over of all power to a small caste seem the natural, unavoidable condition of survival…
…In reality very little was known about the proles. It was not necessary to know much. So long as they continued to work and breed, their other activities were without importance. … Heavy physical work, the care of home and children, petty quarrels with neighbours, films, football, beer, and above all, gambling, filled up the horizon of their minds. … It was not desirable that the proles should have strong political feelings. All that was required of them was a primitive patriotism which could be appealed to whenever it was necessary to make them accept longer working hours or shorter rations….
Beg to differ. First, actually read the status of forces agreement Bush sign with Iraq and then read the speech and you might easily conclude that it’s the same thing, re-branded.
There is no “truthiness” here. Bush intended to stay long term. So did McCain. The agreement with Iraq was window dressing – and they were reluctantly forced to include the deadline only because Obama’s campaign strengthened to hand of the Iraqi government. If you don’t think David Betrayus would be making a joint announcement with PResident McCain about how those provisions needed to be re-evaluated, you don’t get US politics.
I’m writing a 40,000 word explication of how Obama has pushed us under the bus and how despite the efforts of the American “left” to defeat his campaign by ineffectual carping, he had the moral obligation to disregard everything he said on the campaign and institute a Anarcho-Syndicalist Regime based on a melange of the principles of the Catolonian CNT, the Bread and Circus Puppets Collective, Ralph Nader, and “Spliffman”, the hippy guy who works at the juice counter near Dupont Circle. A couple of strong words and presidential statements were all that was needed to overturn the patriarchy, break the hegemony, and abolish imperialism and carnivorism. Lambert was right.
working on my script about Nikola Tesla…
Please say more. Writing an ebook on the history of modern physics. The great Tesla-Edison debate plays prominent role.

Playing with word clouds.
Anyone else find that fascinating and telling? I am not going to type the word Republican again for two weeks!
HEY!
Stop cheering..
It changes day to day. Go to wordle and play with it. Fair warning, it’s highly addictive.
Auto crossing. This weekend starts a 6 week period that I auto cross every weekend, sometimes both days, all day.

Bush’s timetable for withdrawing: NEVER
Obama’s: immediate start, no combat role in 18 months.
Seems different to me.
Beg to differ. First, actually read the status of forces agreement Bush sign with Iraq and then read the speech and you might easily conclude that it’s the same thing, re-branded.
But Bush immediately said that the status of forces agreement would be “renegotiated”.
Where is he now? Obama is just re-announcing a previously negotiated deal.
I’m happy, but c’mon. ‘Thruthiness’ didn’t serve the GOP in the end, and it won’t serve us.

Okily dokily!
Looks to me like he’s timed the withdrawal to conclude right around the midterm elections…

I’m wallowing in beatitude, as usual.
The cold for the wonders of (very, very dry) south Florida.Come on down, y’all!
