There’s a bad virus/worm known as Conficker or Downadup which may have infected your PC. Go here to read about it and what it can do to your computer if it is infected. There are several free downloadable removal tools available. I used this one by Bitdefender which has versions to clean a single pc or a network of linked computers. You can find others here and here (and probably other places as well. So far as I know this doesn’t effect Macs, only computers that use Microsoft operating systems. So please, if you have a PC download one of the free removal tools and run a scan to find out if your computer is infected and to remove that infection.
Don’t wait on this one.
Any idea where you picked it up?
My computer was clean. The worm exploits a security flaw in a component of Windows for which a patch was issued in October. If you didn’t install the patch you are at risk. The worm also apparently can be picked up from any device that uses a USB port. So if you download music or videos from peer to peer sites, or a friend has an infected mp3 player that you downloaded something from you are also at risk of infection by the most recent version of the worm, but you aren’t the only ones.
From the timeline:
Thanks for the options. Happily my computer was clean!

Thanks. I actually accidently went to a site that was weird and flickered in funny ways and wondered if I caught something.
I was watching the You’re Welcome America (or whatever it was) comedy show where Will Ferrel plays George W. and he mentioned something about some gay affair Bush had and I googled it almost right when he said it (hey–I was curious–and it sounds plausable) and I clicked on the first site that came up and . . . it was definitely a trick. I closed the site as quickly as I could but have thought my computer was slow ever since.
I’m pretty sure my computer is clean, but just to be sure I uploaded the latest Security Update for Windows XP.
This is one of the reasons I don’t miss Windows.
Linux rocks. And it’s free.
And it runs on your computer. Yes, you, sitting right there looking at this.
