A squirrel. Though it had left that tree long before he gave up. I’ve tried to explain to him that standing farther back gives you a real advantage in seeing where they go but he just doesn’t listen.
I would like to have heard that conversation. Probably much like the one I just had with a 19 year old about how you can spontaneously do chores without your mother screaming at you to do them. Like, maybe ONCE in 19 years you could do that, just to freak your mother out.
I had had that particular talk with that particular boy so many times, that at one point I just stopped and said “am I even talking? Are words coming out of my mouth?”
Hah! I’ve got you on that one. Already got rels here and George is and will be barking for the next 2 weeks. For some reason I don’t feel so good on winning that one. π
Sweetest dog in the world has heartworms. Shelter claims they tested and she was negative, but it’s an advanced case, which means she’s had it for at least 8 months. Treatment is expensive and iffy.
Oh SN I’m sorry to hear that. I’ve always wondered what would I do if George came down with heartworms. Because the treatment is so expensive, I’m not sure I could have him treated.
I think I would be having a very serious talk with the shelter. Since it is advanced she must have had them while there. I think the shelter should be taking care of this.
I think so too, but we’re going to do it anyway. I didn’t realize how dangerous the treatment can be. After the worms are dead you have to keep the dog very calm for like 6 weeks while the pieces of the dead worms decompose and work their way out of the dog. Otherwise, they can break off and cause havoc. Hopefully they’ll reimburse part of the cost. Looks like upwards of $800
I knew heartworms were pretty bad for the dog, but I never realized about keeping them calm for 6 weeks. I think if this happened to George and I got him treated that there would be no way to keep him calm for 6 weeks.
The shelter should be paying the entire cost and not just reimbursing part of it.
I’m so sorry to hear that SN. It’s not a decision you and your family should have to face. I hate it when people do the right thing and then get smacked around for it.
Me too, SN. We took in the sweetest dog in the world, and he had heartworms, Must be all that sweetness attracts the mosquitos and they get infected. Anyway, our dog stayed at the vets for about two weeks, recovered well, and then led a happy dog’s life in our home.
All my best wishes to you and yours. She will bless you forever for all that you have done for her.
Hey SN, why don’t you think about setting up a PayPal account to help you defray some of the expenses. I’d be happy to pitch in a few bob, and we could run the link on the Dog Blog.
My dog sits in a very peculiar fashion… but I let her do what she wants because she’s a mom.
This is Emma who received the most unfortunate news that she has a case of heartworms and will need to have treatment start in the next month after antibiotics and steroids for her breathing. I heard from my mother Second Nature that there were a few people that would like to donate to her treatment via paypal and I flipped out! I’m really no good at these sudden expenses and am considering a second job to get some quick money… but just look how sad and skinny she looks!
If you’d like to donate to her treatment that looks to be over $600ish, my Paypal address is rudie1@gmail.com π
Colin, check out this page at PayPay, especially section 8.
As I understand it, you can only receive 5 payments in a 12 month period with a “Personal” account. Which means you may want to upgrade to a “Premier” account. If you have a Premier account, I can make a “donate” button for you to go on the DogBlog.
You could always switch back to a Personal account after the fund drive if you don’t like any aspects of the Premier account.
Actually, in re-reading that section you can receive only five credit card funded payments in a year, but you can receive unlimited bank funded payments.
However, I suspect most people will have their PayPal accounts linked to their cards and not directly to their banks.
Another option would be to have people email you, and, if you are comfortable with the idea, you could give them your account details to do a direct bank transfer.
Whoops, I didn’t wait for that second post. I guess if I get too many donations I can work something out through emails. I’ll put that in my sig. Thanks for the heads up
I added a PayPal “Donate” button to diary post (which is linked to the email account you listed). I’ll send you something that way and you can let me know if get it.
Thanks for the idea and for setting it up, keres. He’s just 21 and out on his own, supporting himself. Like he said, the unexpected expenses are tough.
Collin – please do check with the shelter. My daughter has fostered many dogs with heartworms and they provided all the treatment and post-treatment meds. Our shelter would honor that commitment, so maybe yours will also if they have decent funding. by the way, all the dogs were OK. The first one had advanced heartworm and the treatment was not fun, but she has recovered very well and was adopted by a great lady. She does have to have special heartworm treatment, but otherwise she’s OK considering she was 6 or 7 when it was discovered.
He has checked with them and it’s sort of complicated. The dog was going to be euthanized and a rescue group rescued her, and then Colin adopted her from the rescue group. The rescue group had done some type of heartworm test that came out fine, but not another (?)…anyway, the rescue group is reimbursing him $200.00, which will be about a third of the cost.
We’d like to lodge a complaint about the lack of alpacas in the blog.
I thought you wouldn’t be able to out-cute dog-bunny pictures but it turns out alpacas provide excellent competition.
Alpacas? When was the last time anyone saw a duck?
You’ve probably all forgotten they even have ducks!
Would you all keep it down?! I’m trying to sleep. (One of the Brush-tail possum that lives in the roof of our shed).
At least there’s water in the pond – even if it’s way too green.
Or any other distraction for that matter.

I hate to be a gender essentialist but …
Guys and listening, not a good fit. π
I had had that particular talk with that particular boy so many times, that at one point I just stopped and said “am I even talking? Are words coming out of my mouth?”
I hate to be a gender essentialist but …
OK if I say anything derogatory about women, then I’ll have my head beat in. So use your imagination. π
Helmet on just as a precaution. π
Oh, FM, if you can find something negative go ahead and say it.
As if I’m stupid enough to do that. Noooooooooo way! π
Nah, no violence. Instead I’ll just get the right rels to show up for a long stay so you can have a week or two of George’s incessant barking. ;P
Hah! I’ve got you on that one. Already got rels here and George is and will be barking for the next 2 weeks. For some reason I don’t feel so good on winning that one. π
And did it have any effect? No, don’t answer that. I don’t want to depress you.

My b-i-l’s dog had heartworm. It was pretty arduous but he came through it without any lasting effect. I hope it goes as well for your sweetie.
I’m so sorry to hear that SN. It’s not a decision you and your family should have to face. I hate it when people do the right thing and then get smacked around for it.

Great idea. I’d kick in too.
Oh my gosh, that would be great! I think Colin has a paypal account already. I’ll check with him. Thanks!
So will we.

Oh… and hello, I’m Colin.
That’s the first I’ve heard of this special dispensation for mothers.
Has he moved out? Because I hear that makes a difference in children’s levels of appreciation.

Money’s so complicated these days.

Hmm, thanks for the advice. I just upgraded to Premier and have no idea what to do now. …?
I added a PayPal “Donate” button to diary post (which is linked to the email account you listed). I’ll send you something that way and you can let me know if get it.
I used it. Thanks for setting it up keres.
Good to see you, Colin! I’m sorry to hear about Emma. Our pets’ illnesses break our hearts every time.
It’s like Colin is meeting my secret family…
don’t worry your secrets are safe with us.
Of course your secrets are also accessible via a google search but we won’t tell him.
How secret? π
I just sent him $25 dollars through the “Donate” button up top. Here’s hoping I did everything correctly and he gets it.
And, depending on how much of my info it gives him, yes I really do live in a town with that name.
Thanks for the idea and for setting it up, keres. He’s just 21 and out on his own, supporting himself. Like he said, the unexpected expenses are tough.
Been there, done that, and bought the t-shirt (and wore it ’til it fell off).
Just did mine too.

At least $200 helps. I’ll chip in also. Best to Colin and his baby.
Thanks so much! She really is the sweetest thing ever. I’ve never seen a dog so attached to a boy in so short a time.
