They’re pimping band aids. Join us at PublicOptionPlease.com – Opt in for real reform

by nyceve

We hope you’ll all join us as founding activists at a new web site publicoptionplease.com http://publicoptionplease.com/home/

We hope and believe, with the support of Americans who can no longer tolerate the broken status quo (that’s just about all of us), PUBLIC OPTION PLEASE.COM http://publicoptionplease.com/home/ will grow to become the central clearinghouse of the healthcare rights movement.

The Message:

Healthcare is what we want.
It’s what we must have.
It’s our right.

First thing is for you go the the new web site PUBLIC OPTION PLEASE.COM, take a look around and, if you’d like what you see, please register, and join us. http://publicoptionplease.com/home/
At POP, you’ll find information, a poster, buttons and a bumper sticker.

PUBLIC OPTION PLEASE.COM will signal the beginning of a movement to bring true healthcare reform and a public option to the American people.

This is as big an All Hands on Board  moment and movement as we’ve ever had around here. Today, citizens turn the tables on the political class. And imagine the timing, coming the morning after Keith Olbermann’s call to action.

We’re very proud of our PUBLIC OPTION PLEASE art:

We have a poster, button, and the decal/sticker, and we want you to have it.

All of this was created by the acclaimed pop artist Justin Kemerling.

1.Your one-time donation of $5.00 or more to support the public option will get you a “Public Option Please” lapel button to share the message of public option for the public good.
2.If you make a recurring monthly donation of $10.00, a copy of Justin Kemmerling’s inspirational pop art poster, signed by the artist, is your gift from us for making health care a priority.
3.If you donate $25.00 or more a month, your thank you gift from PUBLIC OPTION PLEASE is Shepard Fairey book, Art For Obama which includes art by Public Option Please artist Justin Kemerling. http://publicoptionplease.com/contribute/

Public Option Please, is a 501 C-4, and it’s being launched today to act as a clearinghouse and vehicle to mobilize the YouTube generation and the voices of ordinary people in support of universal healthcare.

This is called bypassing the traditional media and the politicians–removing those filters– to get the healthcare reform and public option message to tens (maybe hundreds) of millions in the heartland.

We’re inspired by the work of Marshall Ganz, who organized the field training for the Obama campaign. POP wants to motivate people to accept the challenge of shaping a future where health care is available to everyone by advocating for the public option right now.  The POP website will act as ground zero for individuals to come together and upload art, videos, participate in contests, learn, contribute, exchange ideas and act in unison to help those who have been left behind by the current health care system.

And Public Option Please  will engage in the following activity:

Advocacy: POP will advocate for those who have been left behind and harmed by the current health care system. You may remember that several years ago, Daily Kos was critical in the effort to get the insurer CIGNA to reverse its initial denial in the case of the liver transplant for Nataline Sarkisyan. We’re going to  continue this work as a patients’ rights activist using POP as a platform to defend those whose health care needs get sacrificed to a corporate bottom line.

Legislation:  Long after a health care bill has been passed, POP will continue to fight for universal, affordable health care.  make no mistake, industry lobbyists will take to Capitol Hill and try to take back whatever gains have been made.  POP will stay involved in the legislative process and keep the forces so resistant to change (and you know exactly who I’m speaking about) from doing their dirty deeds before the public even knows what’s happening.

Policy:  POP will continue to work to expand access to the public health care option.  We will keep abreast of the health care policy debate and look at what works, and what doesn’t, around the world.  We will make sure that insurance industry staffers aren’t the only ones available to write policy papers for members of Congress, and provide resources for state and city health care initiatives across the country.

Mobilizing Grassroots Support:  POP will work with students, community leaders, health care professionals, organizations and activists to mobilize the voices of ordinary Americans into a call for change.

And turning for a moment to the political impact of art in building a movement. This is potentially huge.

Art is unique.

It’s  different from a slogan or even the appeal of a political logo. We hope our poster will transcend the political and give healthcare reform the humanity it deserves. Even someone who doesn’t intuitively get the urgency of healthcare reform, might be able to find some value in the art itself.

And of course, it goes without saying, we believe this is very special art and a distinguished poster, which may even become an iconic piece of history, and we hope you agree.

Art is a critical component of grassroots action. It should galvanize  and we hope our Public Option For The Public Good poster will inspire the sort of support that this poster did. Can we do it? Yes We Can.

POP will work with musicians, actors, artists and social justice advocates to engage the public in a way that makes the public option part of a larger, longer civil rights battle for universal health care.

And please stay tuned, next week, we’ll have some great news to announce, involving art.

And who are we? We, are nyceve (Eve Gittelson), Jane Hamsher and Marcy Wheeler. We’re the three directors of Public Option Please, and we have working with us some tireless and extraordinary people, who are motivated by only one goal, what’s best for the American people. Healthcare for All Americans includes a Public Option.
