The British are “already” conducting an extensive Inquiry into the Iraq war and the process that led up to the invasion.
The Iraq Inquiry, also referred to as the Chilcot Inquiry, was announced on 15 June 2009 by the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. He announced that it would look into the country’s role in the Iraq War and would be held in private, a decision which was subsequently changed. Brown stated, “no British documents and no British witness will be beyond the scope of the inquiry.
And the Chilcot inquiry is now closing in on the real culprits.
Iraq Inquiry bombshell: Secret letter to reveal new Blair war lies
There is no point for me in elaborating on the implications and consequences of this article in today’s Mail on Sunday article. I’ll just extract a few choice paragraphs and trust that you will all click through to read the entire column (my bold).
An explosive secret letter that exposes how Tony Blair lied over the legality of the Iraq War can be revealed.
The Chilcot Inquiry into the war will interrogate the former Prime Minister over the devastating ‘smoking gun’ memo, which warned him in the starkest terms the war was illegal.
[…]
He even concealed the bombshell information from his own Cabinet, fearing it would spark an anti-war revolt. The only people he told were a handful of cronies who were sworn to secrecy.
Lord Goldsmith was so furious at his treatment he threatened to resign – and lost three stone as Mr Blair and his cronies bullied him into backing down.
[…]
The Mail on Sunday has learned that the inquiry has been given Lord Goldsmith’s explosive letter, and that Mr Blair and the peer are likely to be interrogated about it when they give evidence in the New Year. […]
The cat is out of the bag. The truth will come out – at least most of it. And whatever is still left of Tony Blair’s “legacy” will be demolished.
But when will the time come for a full inquiry into the Bush/Cheney administration’s lies to the public to start the unjustified and illegal war in Iraq? Thousands of soldiers killed and maimed for no good reason, not to mention the hundreds of thousands Iraqi dead, wounded and traumatized when their country was made into the theater of the “war on terror”.
There must be a special place in hell reserved for those responsible, but justice should be served long before then!
Now if only he and Bush and Cheney would all be tried in an international court…
Of course, we all know Bush won’t be setting foot outside the US anytime soon.
Anyone know what’s happening with his Paraguay property?
Paraguay elected a leader who won’t be too friendly to the Bushes. Not in the sense of harboring a fugitive, anyway.
Yes, he’s a former bishop and liberation theologian. Also read somewhere that the non-extradition w. Paraguay was to be cancelled. Just wondering if the Bushes are finding any use for the property other than escaping justice.
I cross posted this to Daily Kos and it seems to be getting some attention.
sure is.
.
On the first day of proceedings, Sir Peter Ricketts, chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee in 2001 told the inquiry that containment policy in 2001, which included sanctions, was “failing”. He also said that they were aware in around February 2001 that White House officials were discussing “regime change ” in Iraq, but that it was not UK policy until after 9/11. [13] Sir William Patey [head of the Middle East department at the Foreign Office at the time] was asked by Lyne if containment policy “could have continued like that until such time as [Hussein] departed?” to which Patey replied “Possibly”. [14]
Who’s who at the Inquiry
I was disappointed listening to the discussion on the first day of the Chilcot’s hearings. It was all Bush’s fault, teflon Tony had a clear conscience. However, the policy formed in 2001 by Blair and Bush had the hallmark of the previous years of Blair and Clinton. It was Margaret Thatcher who persuaded Bush Sr. in Aspen, Co. to make an about face and oppose Saddam Hussein’s invasion and occupation of Kuwait and oil fields.
We know what Operation Desert Fox is not. It’s not to remove Saddam from power nor kill him. It’s not about punishing the people of Iraq. All that, as they say, is official. It comes from prime minister, foreign secretary and chief of staff. From White House and Pentagon, backed up by Tony Blair – whose solicitude for the president of the United States is reaching patronising proportions …
What won’t is the enunciation by ministers of the step by step model of containment they evidently have in mind. Tony Blair calls Saddam a serial liar there’s a danger of serial missile lobbing. Many find talk of ‘degrading’ Saddam’s chemical and biological weapons programmes offensive not because they are unprepared to support bombing but because the euphemism insults intelligence. When Robin Cook talks of good progress we need to be let in on the scheme that is evidently somewhere in his mind. Is a ‘heavy setback’ for Saddam enough of a justification for death and destruction?
"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
Blair lied. Way back then he was called BLIAR. Remember?
