No, Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan did not tell gays to go to hell, he said that God will send them there. And apparently transgender people, too, because … well because St. Paul said so somewhere, so who cares what Jesus might feel about it?
Homosexuals and transsexuals “will never enter the kingdom of heaven”, a leading Roman Catholic cardinal said on Wednesday. […]
“Transsexuals and homosexuals will never enter the kingdom of heaven and it is not me who says this, but Saint Paul,” the cardinal said, in comments reported by the Ansa news agency.
But, hey, it’s cool, because he says that even though God will discriminate against LGBT people when they die because they are an insult to The Most High, here on earth they should be treated just like anyone else.
Congratulations Cardinal, you win my “God Loves Everyone (wink, wink, nod, nod)” hypocrisy award of the week. Because after your followers hear the first part of your message (Gays are an INSULT TO GOD and will BURN IN HELL for ALL ETERNITY!”) how many of them are gonna pay attention to the second part (“… but you should be nice to them — sort of — anyway”)? Yeah, I thought so. Damn few.
Don’t take this the wrong way Your Eminence, but to me you’ll always be [insert your favorite expletive here]. I also sincerely hope that when you meet Jesus in the afterlife he’s wearing a big rainbow sash and hugging close to his chest all those “non-opposite sex” folks you think don’t belong in your precious Heaven, just before St. Peter pulls the lever which sends you down the long slide to that fire and brimstone lake to which you’re so fond of condemning other people. Now that would be a just reward in my good book.
Ps. Wonder why he left pedophiles and transvestites off that list of people who insult the Lord of Hosts with their bad, icky, nasty ways? Just asking ….
Harboring adults who hurt little children for decades and then try to make the children feel as if they were the guilty ones – I don’t want to be in any heaven where that is OK.
Do not feel bad for not going there on account of the cardinal.
I`m pretty sure he`ll have plenty of company, wearing the same kind of clothes, & especially sporting that little pendant cross made of gold.
I believe they are selectively illiterate.
In the big book they often preach from, it specifically mentions to never do harm to children, yet they know chapter & verse about the gay.
“”Whoever harms a child would be better to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.” …
A Cheneying Dick?
There’s a reason I always liked goats better.
Which, of course, has to be followed up by this:
I grew up Catholic in a predominantly Latino neighborhood and don’t recognize what this Cardinal is saying. If he got in front of us at Mass and spewed this bile, I think people would be horrified.
All the priests I’ve heard had positive things to say to us. This Cardinal’s words would sound so wrong.
“Ps. Wonder why he left pedophiles and transvestites off that list of people who insult the Lord of Hosts with their bad, icky, nasty ways? Just asking ….”
Or to put it another way:
It is better to be a lapsed Catholic than a Catholic in his lap.
I thought the Roman Catholic Church teaches there are no unpardonable sins, and only a couple of sins– having to do with repudiating god— that were automatic tickets to hell.
Apparently, the same bottomless goldmine of hate is available to benefit both the GOP & the Catholic Church. Why not? The Church could definitely use some of that fired-up devotion & blind faith.
(Side note: if transsexuals were actually referred to by St.Paul, medicine in that part of the world was clearly more advanced in biblical times than previously thought.)
The Cardinal is a jerk. And a homophobic bigot.
but in fairness, the rest of his statement suppports equal rights for LGBT persons:
from Raw Story: Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan said that while the Church regarded homosexuality as an “insult to God”, this did not justify discrimination against gay and transsexual people. “Homosexuality is therefore a sin, but this does not justify any form of discrimination.”
Supporting equal rights is not the same as not justifying discrimination. I’d bet this pig is joining his cohorts in doing all he can to fight off marriage equality. He’s just mildly advising his listeners that it probably would be wrong to beat up gays or try to keep them from voting. Fuck him and his church.
