We’re still waiting for the baby around these cabinish parts, but we’re glad to learn someone realized it was a bad idea to court-martial female soldiers for getting pregnant. At least they were planning on punishing the fathers too, but that was a very tone-deaf decision. I hope you had a good holiday yesterday. Things are nice and quiet here, even though the weather is terrible. I’m still frustrated about my inability to find a good pastrami sandwich in the burbs. I’ve found good chinese, decent thai, and a nice pho place, but good Jewish food still eludes me.

Yeah, what kind of idiot puts lettuce, tomato, and onions on a corned beef sandwich with swiss cheese and coleslaw?
I’m fantasizing about a trip to Katz’s. Too bad the shipping charges are so high…
I could some decent stuff here and send it. But how would it stay cold?
Ship it during a massive winter storm? 🙂
Visit Jim and Andi and have them take you to Shapiro’s. Yuummm.
Good luck, you two. I’m so excited, and it’s not even my kid. Haha.
Being a father requires a lot of work, but don’t leave us here in internet land. The Progressive blogopshere might get better now that it’s waking up to Hamsher, but it won’t be the same without your much-needed and appreciated analysis.
As soon as I graduate, assuming you’re still around, I am definitely making some donations.
Where are you now?
I miss Katz’s, too, and I’ve been ovo-lacto-pesca-vegetarian and away from Philly for 25 years now. I loved the way they passed a piece of paper with sliced cheese or cold cuts down the line while you waited.
Mazel Tov on the youngin’!
I followed CG’s link and am confused; what is the name that deli in West Philly I’m thinking of?
I’m not sure. Where in West Philly?
Near Penn. I think (after sleeping) it is called Koch’s.
Where did you guys move to?
I must have missed the talk of the baby. Congrats, Boo.
My holiday was great given the events of this evening.
Bobby Bowden is retiring. And, with the resignation of Urban Meyer this evening, even the Tears of St Tebow cannot stop the exodus of elite recruits from Gainesville.
The Lost Decade is over. The Evil Empire is crumbling.
Life is good again.
And that whole health care thing is neat, too, but, you know, priorities and all that.
I went to a good Deli in Lower Merion earlier this week. Does that count as the Burbs from where you live?
Unfortunately, no. But I know which one you mean.
i feel your pain. or perhaps more than your pain. we used to live in west ridge in chicago and i worked in skokie, so i knew where to get good everything. then for some reason we moved to rural indiana (don’t ask), and now i don’t know where to get good anything. except weed, and i quit that years ago.
The aforementioned Shapiro’s on S. Meridian St. in Indy is excellent, if you happen to be in the neighborhood.
Oddly, out here in nowhere coastal NC, we have an outstanding deli. They make the finest Reuben I’ve ever had in my life and I’m comparing it to ones I’ve had in NYC. Pastrami on rye, O my yes, as good as I’ve gotten at Hassidic diners. But, here’s the weird part: the deli is located in a Christian bookstore so I have to walk past “inspirational literature,” angel figurines and blue-eyed Jesus paintings to eat good Jewish food. LOL! The owners are originally from New Jersey, of course…
That is really funny. Maybe we’ll have to meet up there this summer. 🙂
I still want some pastrami. BooMan was on the upper west side and made the trip down to Katz’s to bring some back home for me in the spring, missing his train and having to wait an extra 3 hours in the process, but it was the BEST ever. Especially the pickles. Totally worth the missed train, IMO.
One of the most frequent complaints I overheard when I lived in south Florida was from New Yorkers who would exclaim, “You can’t get decent hard rolls down here!”
