It’s not surprising that Corey Haim is dead. In fact, it was totally predictable. I might have predicted it right here, if I thought anybody would care.
He specialized in mindless entertainment, but sometimes that is exactly what you need.
Rest in peace.
I had no idea of what he looked like or who he was. My husband and I went to the movies often when we were dating in the 70’s, but after we got married and had kids, we seldom got to go. So I missed the whole 80’s pop culture movie phase. No “Pretty in Pink”, “Sixteen Candles”, “Lost Boys”, “Flashdance”…nuthin’.
But I always find it sad that someone with a lot of opportunities couldn’t get stable after all the attention he got during teen years in Hollywood. I wonder what his family was like and wonder what he needed and never got. Thirty-eight is young and it’s a shame he’s gone.
But that’s just one of those things, I guess.
This takes me back to the 80’s in a big way: My children and I, almost every Saturday, went to an afternoon movie followed by a visit to a video arcade where we would blow thru a roll of quarters each. This was our bonding time wherein Mom got to be associated with good stuff instead of always being the evil enforcer of homework, bedtime, chores, etc. It meant that I saw a lot of movies I would not have usually chosen to see and actually enjoyed most of them.
We’d have spirited discussions about the movies afterwards and it was a good opportunity to exchange life lessons. After seeing Edward Scissorhands, I was on a rant about the plot being pointless and my son cut me off by saying, “Muh-ther! It doesn’t have to mean anything!” It was a crystal moment when I realized the difference between my generation and theirs.
Anyway, the three of us had crushes on certain actors like Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Winona Ryder, early Johnny Depp. I know my grown son and daughter are going to cry today over this news, over losing a piece of their adolescence. Maybe they’ll recall the fun we had like I do and that will help them feel better.
Damn, really? Wow…just wow.
I’m sorry I don’t have anything more profound to say than that, but I swear I thought I read it wrong on FB.
…however, I find it interesting that he died in same apartment complex as Rick James.
RIP. 🙁
