I’m so sorry these days for The Onion, because satire in these times simply can’t compete with reality. Case in point: read this headline from TPM about the “Drill, Baby, Drill” Woman.
Palin accuses Obama of being in bed with Big Oil
Seriously, have these people no shame? No sense of irony? No memory? Here’s Sarah on May 14th:
“We need to keep drilling because if we don’t drill for a year, we’re going to be more and more reliant on foreign countries that have even less stringent environmental standards,” Palin told ABC News.
Here’s Sarah on CNBC agreeing with in 2008 we need de-regulation for Big Oil, Coal, Nuclear, etc.:
Absolutely! You’re hitting the nail right on the head!
— Sarah Palin
Oh, by the way, here’s Sarah’s record on regulation of Big Oil when she was Governor of Alaska:
Oil and gas drilling. Palin has supported oil and gas drilling plans anywhere in Alaska, including in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the central Arctic, the entire Arctic Ocean, and in fish-rich Bristol Bay and Cook Inlet. On her watch, regulation and government oversight of Alaska oil facilities is terribly lacking, and she has declined to establish a citizens’ advisory council to provide more effective public oversight of the expanding oil and gas operations in Arctic Alaska. […]
Exxon Valdez oil spill damages. Palin refuses to push Exxon to pay the government for the unanticipated environmental injuries from the disastrous 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. Almost 20 years later, the private case is still unresolved and the governments likewise have yet to collect full payment from Exxon. Shortly before Palin took office in 2006, the governments presented Exxon with a demand to pay $92 million for this additional environmental damage, but her administration has since not pressed the issue nor taken Exxon to court to collect the money. Meanwhile, Exxon reaps record profits from Alaska.
Stunning hypocrisy isn’t it?
The woman who still wants more off shore drilling (despite the fact it will not significantly reduce the cost of gasoline), who agreed that de-regulation of Big Oil was what was needed when she was running for Vice President ion 2008, the woman who was Big Oil’s BFF in Alaska when she was governor, now says Obama is in bed with BP?
I guess she’s just a comedian like Rush Limbaugh. And just like him she’s not a very good one. But as a self-parodist? Elle est magnifique!
Palin knows the word “stringent?” Who’d have known that.
She knows how to read it when someone else types it for her. Does she understand what it means? That’s the real question.
Is she saying that Obama is in bed with Big Oil but still not doing enough for them?
So Obama isn’t satisfying Big Oil in bed?
She’s not staggeringly inconsistent. She’s just all maverickey.
No wonder she couldn’t remember the Exxon case as one she disagreed with from the Supreme Court.
And I’m just glad I no longer have to listen to the right touting her as an ‘energy expert’ as they did throughout campaign.
It doesn’t matter: the press will keep covering her and saying, ‘We have to cover her. She’s a big story,” without the least hint that they understand who makes her a big story. To the morons who love her, there will be no inconsistency; she’s just talking “common sense.” As long as we have a press which thinks that prosperous Democrats who favor policies that help poor people are being hypocritical or trapped by “white guilt,” hypocrisy and inconsistency stories will only go one way. Surprise! The corporate-owned media favor stories they think will be useful to corporations.
This may be an example of being so opportunistic as to cannibalize your own interests. I doubt Palin’s friends at Exxon and BP are happy to hear her say something like this. The more play it gets the more Obama is free to regulate the drillers. Although obviously Palin believes that everything she says redounds to her own credit and that she can say whatever she wants to. This is only the case so long as no electoral test is ever imposed on her. So I still think there is a case to be made that she won’t run…
I seem to recall that Mr. Sarah worked for BP and not only that the she’s a fine one to be talking about BP connections….her inauguration as Governor was completely paid for by BP.
Yeah who needs The Onion when we have the Republican Party.
.
BP was just one of many sponsors of the event. Todd was employed by BP on the north slope as a blue collar operator. The project management by BP on the north slope is cause for worry: Liberty oil wells and corrosive Endicott pipelines infrasctucture.
"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
