Israel – Its Own Worst Enemy

Promoted by Steven D

So – I was reading the news this morning and came across the story of Eden Abergil. A former reserve officer in the IDF who left service a little over a year ago. She will now and forever be famous for the pictures she posted on her Facebook page. Posing with Palestinian prisoners.

IDF Facebook poster denies wrongdoing

Eden Abergil, the reserve IDF officer who posted photographs from her compulsory service on Facebook, showing her with detained Palestinians who were handcuffed and blindfolded, said Tuesday in an interview with Army Radio “I still don’t understand what I did wrong.
[…]
Abergil was recently discharged from the IDF and posted the photos, apparently from 2008, in an album she called “Army…best time of my life :).”

Good times indeed!

Subjecting other people to humiliation, yet she does not understand what she did wrong. Only harmless fun (we’ve heard that one before…):

Israeli blogger Dimi Reider posted the entire conversation and provided the English translation:

Adi Tal: “You’re the sexiest like that…”

Eden Abergil: “Yeah I know lol mummy what a day it was look how he completes my picture, I wonder if he’s got Facebook! I have to tag him in the picture! lol”

Shani Cohen: “LOL you psycho… I wonder who’s the photographerrrrr”

Shani Cohen: “Eden… he’s got a hard-on for you… lol for sure!!!”

Eden Abergil: Lol no honey he’s got a hard-on for youuu this is why you took that picture lol you took my picture!!!!”

The Israeli Defence Force said in a statement: “These actions are ugly and callous; details of the incident have been forwarded up the chain of command.”

Is this simply the attitude of a random twisted mind or a symptom of a society that is unraveling?

Another article in Haaretz published later in the day suggests that the Abergil incidence is not the exception, but par for the course.

In a statement released Tuesday by Breaking the Silence, an organization that collects testimonies of Israeli soldiers on alleged abuse of Palestinians in the territories, the group said that while the IDF claimed to be “shocked” by Abergil’s photos, it did not represent “the ugly behavior of just one person.”

The statement released in a Facebook page called “The Norm that IDF Spokesman Avi Benayahu Denies,” also included several graphic photos depicting soldiers posing next to the bodies of suspected militants as well as next to handcuffed detainees [viewer discretion is advised].
[…]
“We suggest that the IDF Spokesman not insult the intelligence of the Israeli public, and clarify that it is a widespread phenomenon, not an aberration caused by a single soldier,” the statement said, adding that the enclosed photos were taken at several times during the last ten years and represented only a “preliminary batch.”

The below picture is rather telling of the attitudes prevailing in large parts of Israeli society today – what a crew of charmers – harassing and mocking an old woman.

The legacy of Jewish liberalism and humanitarianism is disintegrating rapidly.

And don’t forget the Mavi Marmara
