It’s the first day of the Barclay’s English Premier League season, so I’m not too interested in politics. I’ll be interested to see if everyone behaves themselves. They cancelled a friendly match between England and the Netherlands a few days ago because of the rioting. Also, too, the Philly Union signed Freddie Adu. He might debut tonight against FC Dallas.
What’s on your mind?
has lost the competition to post the most offensive picture of Michele Bachmann ever.
Definitely.
I saw that photo on TBogg earlier. Great photo.
Adu was he the young kid the United signed when he was like 14?
DC United signed him at that age, but he appears to be in a developemental period. Not seen him much.
Barca signed a 7 YO brazilian kid. Insane or wot?
Adu was signed by Benefica, a top-flight Portuguese squad. But he never panned out there and he’s been getting loaned around Europe. He’s coming over from a second-tier Turkish squad. Bradley called him back for the Gold Cup and he had two assists in our 4-2 loss to Mexico in the finals.
He’s really good, but he’s not that much of a goal-scorer.
If he can play in the midfield, and shows good control and can set people up, that would be good. I am hoping that someone will edge Landon Donovan out. Donovan is good, but he is not the player that will lead the US to the finals of the WC. He is simply not at that level in international football.
On the Union he’ll probably play just back of Danny Mwanga and Sebastian Le Toux. It’s been a weird season. Last year, Le Toux led MLS in combined goals and assists. This year they’ve been playing him more as an attacking midfielder than a striker and his only goal is off a penalty kick. Meanwhile, their leading scorer, Carlos Ruiz, has just been sent to a Mexican team. So, Adu will probably take over Le Toux’s role and Le Toux will go back to being a striker.
That’s my guess.
LeToux with two goals last night, but both on PKs. Adu will be a great addition, I’m excited for the final stretch of the season. Go Union! Let’s hit a match, BooMan!
I just went to Google he was playing in Portugal. That probably the only player I would recognize the name in the whole MLS. It was big news when they signed him.
Seven? I guess its like the MLB in the Dominican Republic. Spend a little to have rights. Seven though?
I wonder about him occasionally. He has sort of dropped off the map, not on the US team. He must be 22-23 now. Have you seen him play?
Now that the US has signed a new coach, I hope that we can concentrate on a really important issue: the jerseys. The US does not seem to understand the jersey thing. The Brits wear a specific color light or dark for every match. The Brazilians, the portugese, the spanish, blah blah blh. They DO NOT change their jerseys every single WC. Plus their jerseys are related to the national colors.
When will someone come up with a decent RED, WHITE or BLUE jersey for the US men and women, and just stick with the dang thing thereafter? We actually wore a GOLD jersey in 2002. No wonder we played like shit.
I agree with consistency. Pick something and stay with it.
The new red ones are nice but that’s not the red in our flag (not that that red would look good).
We should stick with either all-white or deep blue with red and white trim (home/away).
Team USA for Ultimate Frisbee had some awesome jerseys a couple years ago. I almost bought one but the price was a little steep for me.
Here are some photos. The colors look a lot deeper in person.
I watched a little bit of the Newcastle / Arsenal match at an Irish pub down the street from the hotel I’m staying. There were a few British dudes in Arsenal regalia that did get a little bit rowdy. Well, loud, anyway.
I’m currently in Atlanta. I went to Bobby Cox night last night at Turner Field, and can honestly say it was the best time I’ve ever had at a baseball game. It was great seeing so many of the players and coaches that I grew up watching.
And the fact that the Braves won big and forced a patented Zambrano meltdown was just icing on the cake.
And then the fireworks afterwords were like the delicious little flowers on the icing on the cake.
I’m going to the game tonight too, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the 1991 team that kicked off the Braves’ current competitive era. Might need to take a nap before that though.
Almost a brawl and Zambrano said hes quitting. Good game to see! Atlanta is playing good ball and I am nervous about them come playoff time. Phillies are up 7.5 games up but playoffs are a new season.
The Zambrano thing was weird. I didn’t hear about his supposed retirement until today, but after he almost hit Chipper with 2 pitches, the Braves were ready to rumble, but none of the Cubs players even went to the first step of their dugout. It was clear none of them had his back. I’ve never seen anything like it.
Phillies are definitely going to win the division. They are playing tremendous baseball, and have been all year. The Braves are a new team now though. With the addition of Michael Bourn and the demotion of Scott Proctor in favor of Arodys Vizcaino, I don’t think they have any holes. When Brian McCann gets healthy, they can play with anyone.
I’m looking forward to the playoffs, and hoping to make a return trip to Atlanta in late October π
Hmmm late October? I don’t think so. π
I think that I am in love with Megan Rapinoe. I’m married, she’s supposedly …. gay, but it’s true love nonetheless. Every time she got in the game, good things happened. She had 2 assists and 1 score, and made any number of shots in the final, none that went in.
She is so much fun to watch! Just a real strong player, and she is all of 21 I think.
Not doing much TV watching since F1 is on hiatus…
..working on the cars (new tires!) and drinking beer in the afternoon…as good as it gets for a weekend warrior such as myself.
Got the old green SAAB Wagon ont he road and am driving it all over Denver with a vengeance.

happy weekend to all at the frog pond and to the red haired midget (The Finn Man) too !

Many young international players start their career in the Dutch league. For example the Brazilian stars Romario and Ronaldo.
"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
My British team is Queens Park Rangers– the Super Hoops. Winners of the nPower Championship League last year, I had high hopes for them as they moved back up to the Premiership for the first time since 1996. However, reality bites. A 0-4 loss to Bolton Wanderers yesterday provided a rude awakening to the faithful at Loftus Road. Oh well– it’s a long season! Glad the season has begun.
