Mitt Romney represents everything that people hate about the economy.
Officials believe Obama’s tour around the country to promote his jobs bill is paying dividends, but they continue to acknowledge the president has a tough battle ahead as he works to improve the economy and win reelection.
“We have a tough economy,” one official said. “The sun comes up in the morning, the sky is blue, the grass is green. We’ve got a tough economy. We’re going to have a tough election. That’s just the deal.”
But the official said that the choice next November will come down to “who do you trust” to fix the economy: Obama or someone like Mitt Romney who “represents everything the American people hate about the economy.”
It’s not just the economy. I wouldn’t trust Mitt Romney to protect the honor of his wife let alone stand up to foreign leaders or terrorists. He’s afraid to hunt anything bigger than a varmint. He’s afraid to take a position if it’s unpopular or the slightest bit inconvenient, and he doesn’t stick by his decisions once he makes them. You can’t rely on him in any way.
Oddly, Mitt Romney’s untrustworthiness and malleability on the issues is what makes him the best possible GOP president from the left’s perspective.
But let’s not test that theory.
I’m starting to think even Romney isn’t going to be able to keep the 2012 election close. We got some relatively good inklings we’re going to avoid a full-on double-dip economic crap out (2.5% growth plus Europe muddling towards a deal). So even though we won’t have a good economy by then, it seems like it might not get terribly worse.
If so, we have this idea now that ROmney is the GOP’s only viable candidate, the only one who has a fighting chance against Obama. Maybe. But how much of a chance is that really? Romney is the absolute epitome of the 1% and I expect anger and mobilization around that theme to only grow over the next year. Add in the fact that Romney is VERY mediocre politician (at least on the heavyweight level) going up against a world-class politician/incumbent President.
There are signs that the GOP is fucked no matter what in 2012 on the Presidential level. I like that. Especially if it causes progressives to put more of their energies into down-ballot elections where it is really needed.
Remember what Mike Huckabee said last time: Mitt Romney reminds people of the guy who laid them off.
I trust Mitt to allow the Neocons bomb Iran and bring back the war on terror.
I know what you mean by the statement, and how you’re attributing it to how people think writ large, but could you please stop using “protect the honor of his wife”? It’s incredibly sexist, even if you’re talking about the voting population.
Maybe he’s talking about Mitt leaving home — but agreed, the phrase harkens back to something pretty ugly.
Just like that 2004 poll question for female voters: if you’re alone in a cabin in the woods & a bear is outside, who would you want to protect you: Bush or Kerry?
Please.
(I was actually living in a cabin in the woods at the time, surrounded by bears. Regards the relative number of women living alone in the woods among the electorate at the time, the question was both cynical and stupid.)
