Report: Sarkozy calls Netanyahu ‘liar’

(JPost) – French President Nicolas Sarkozy called Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu a liar in a conversation with the US president, French website “Arret sur Images” reported on Monday night, a report confirmed by a Reuters journalist.

“I cannot bear Netanyahu, he’s a liar,” Sarkozy told US President Barack Obama during a frank exchange where the US president took him to task for backing a Palestinian request for membership of the UN cultural heritage agency UNESCO. According to the report, Obama replied: “You’re fed up with him, but I have to deal with it all day!”

Reportedly, the two presidents have left out any deductions about the delicate issue of Israeli-Palestinian relations. Obama had first criticized Sarkozy for not having warned that he would vote for the accession of Palestine to UNESCO, while the United States were strongly opposed. The conversation then drifted to Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister. Certain not to be heard, the two presidents are relaxed. “All I can see, [he] is a liar,” Sarkozy said. “You’re tired of it, but I have to deal with it every day! “replied Obama, who then asked Sarkozy to try to convince the Palestinians to go easy on their application for UN membership.

"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."

Sometime earlier this year, Ehud Barak, Defense Minister, called Netanyahu a “bullshitter,” which was reported by Haaretz.

Speaking of bullshit, in this regard, I always liked Netanyahu’s Likud solution to Oslo (from Clean Break, a Neocon foreign policy document created for the first Netanyahu administration): “No more land for peace. Peace for peace!” That was in 1996. Interestingly, a few days before his last address to Congress, Netanyahu met with Richard Pearle, the primary architect of Clean Break.

White House mum on Sarkozy and Obama chat about Netanyahu

(CBS News) – The White House on Tuesday declined to comment on reports President Obama and French President Nicholas Sarkozy spoke candidly of their mutual frustration with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while the two leaders were in Cannes last week for the G20 summit.

“I don’t have any comment on the reported conversation that took place apparently in a bilateral” meeting between Mr. Obama and Sarkokzy, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One Tuesday as they flew to Pennsylvania for a speech by Mr. Obama.

"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."

The Israel-Palestine fiasco (with Binnie leading the circus) gets chalked up to a massive fail foreign policy wise for Obama.

Foreign policy “successes” via the Navy Seals/Special Forces and via Predator-launched missiles seems to be doable (as usual).

(CS Monitor) – Mr. Netanyahu – who like the other two leaders, has heard as much and worse directed at him in his political career – will take this in stride.

Of course, you wouldn’t necessarily know this from some of the coverage and reaction in the days since. A story in the Sydney Morning Herald today asserts “the loose remarks reflect mounting international frustration with the stalled Middle East peace process, as well as a barely concealed animosity between Mr Obama and Netanyahu.”

Abraham Foxman, head of the US-based Anti-Defamation League, a pro-Israel organization, went further in a statement yesterday.

“President Obama’s response to Mr. Sarkozy implies that he agrees with the French leader,” said Foxman. “What is sad is that we now have to worry to what extent these private views inform foreign policy decisions of the US and France – two singularly important players in the peace process.”

The frustration the Obama and Sarkozy administrations feel is real, and there are reasons behind it. Netanyahu has continued to expand settlements in the West Bank and in East Jerusalem. Israel announced an acceleration of construction in response to Palestine being voted a full member of UNESCO, a move the US opposed.

That powerful men with different interests, who disagree on important issues, might not be planning family holidays together, is hardly surprising.

Not surprising he has been called a liar if you read this little piece about how the IAEA didnt bother checking the Russian nuclear scientist claim and it turns out he was a specialist in nanodiamond production
