There’s nothing on his first three albums to suggest this would have happened, but Bruce Springsteen has ended up as the kind of musician who likes being on tour during an election year. Judging from the first single off his as-yet-unreleased new album, Wrecking Ball, Springsteen not only will be on tour with the E Street Band in 2012, he has a few–no, make that a lot of–thoughts to share about the state of our union.

At first listen, “We Take Care Of Our Own” is a fiercely determined and angry “small p” patriotic anthem. It’s not “This Land Is Your Land” (nothing is), but it’s in that tradition.
“From Chicago to New Orleans,
From the muscle to the bone;
From the shotgun shack to the Superdome;
There ain’t no help, the cavalry stayed home,
There ain’t no-one hearing the bugle blown;
We take care of our own
We take care of our own
Wherever this flag’s flown
We take care of our own.”
How’s it sound to you?
